Westerleigh Care Home is situated in Stanley, County Durham, close to the local market. An ex-colliery village, Stanley has a very friendly, warm and close-knit community feel to it.

The staff at Westerleigh are warm and friendly and visitors comment on how welcoming they are. Their interaction with residents is very ‘hands-on’ and they treat them like their own family. It is genuinely true to say that their residents are loved.

A lot of emphasis is placed on activities to keep the residents stimulated, with things like exercises, excursions, picnics, movie night, dominoes and painting. There is a local market every Thursday which some residents like to attend and a few go to the pub now and then.

Staff, like to build a close relationship with residents', families and friends and have an open door policy for them.

The residents also get involved in the running of the home and help with the post, gardening and many other activities.

Links with the community are encouraged and groups come in from local schools, colleges and churches.

I found the management and the staff to be very approachable and helpful. They were always friendly to me and my family and nothing was a bother to them. My mam never complained about the staff, she had nothing but praise for them as she realised they had a very difficult job. She was in Westerleigh
for over three years and always seemed happy, she enjoyed the sing-a-longs and bingo until her health deteriorated over the last three to four months, and she received excellent care over this latter period when it was needed most.

My mam has recently been admitted into the care home alongside her sister. They are both extremely happy to be residents in their local town. The home is very clean, the food is of a high standard and nothing is a trouble to the staff caring for them. The manager and admin staff are very approachable
and friendly and go out of their way to help with any problems. I have no hesitation in recommending this care home.

We were unhappy with my mam's residential home and decided to move her. This was a massive step for us as moving someone with Alzheimer's is not an easy decision. I am pleased to say it was the right decision. I know my mam is receiving the best care from all the staff, and they all fully support us
as a family. The manager is extremely responsive, and you can tell provides good leadership to the home and staff. My mam was recently 80, and the home did everything they could to help us make special memories. Living with Alzheimer's is tough, but Westerleigh helps us on our journey.

We tried two other care homes prior to our arrival at Westerleigh Residential Home. The care here is absolutely top notch and nothing is a bother. Mum is so well looked after every hour of every day. If I was CQC I would rate them exemplary. The lead the staff get from the manager is very professional
and the secretary is very welcoming and friendly.

Mam-in-law has been a resident here since December 2020 and we have been delighted with the care she has received. All of the staff, from the carers and nurses to the administrator and manager, are superb - friendly, approachable and sincere. We are kept informed of any situations which inevitably arise
in care homes and communication with staff is always easy and pleasurable. Mam-in-law herself settled immediately and her relationship with all staff, but particularly her carers, is a joy to witness - she is constantly laughing and enjoys the banter they all share. Mam-in-law is always clean and smart and her hair is frequently washed and styled, ensuring her dignity is intact. The home itself is always clean and fresh-smelling with a calm atmosphere, something very difficult to achieve in a care home setting. In summary, although we didn’t choose Westerleigh as Mam-in-law was admitted as an emergency during Covid, we couldn’t have wished for a better environment for her and are so grateful to all at Westerleigh

My mother is very happy in this home. She has settled well and feels safe. She enjoys the food, the bingo and singing. She likes to be in her room a lot but she's happy with that and the staff check on her a lot and has a chat with her. Staff are very friendly when we go to visit.

I have been visiting three friends in Westerleigh care home for quite a while more and must say it is absolutely first-class in its treatment and care of its residents. It is very clean and welcoming. The staff are superb in the way they attend to everyone - nothing is a problem. The love and dignity
they show shines through from the home manager - administrator - care staff - chefs and cleaning staff. They all do this care home proud. Very well done, and long may it continue. God bless and thank you.

Westerleigh Residential Home has been caring for our father in difficult circumstances due to the nature of his dementia. The home welcomes us in to visit and our father is receiving all the appropriate care that he needs, which is delivered with kindness, respect and consideration. The manager consults

The care provided for my mum with advanced dementia was excellent. The staff were very kind, thoughtful and understanding of Mum's needs. Myself, my family and friends were always welcomed at any time when we visited my mum. The difficulties we had seeing Mum deteriorate were very hard, but the staff
showed care to us also. I cannot thank all the staff enough for looking after my mum (and us) until Mum took her last breath. Thank you.

I would like to say the staff have been brilliant to Dad while he has been there, since December 2019. They are very good and the manager needs a pat on the back for the work they do to keep things happening. Social activities are good. I think the setting is nice and the way the residents are talked
to nicely and told they are doing well. I think the staff are great in the nursing home.

My aunt was a full funding resident at Westerleigh for three and a half years. First years were fine while my aunt had independence and capacity, however, when she lost this, the service in the home was most definitely not the best.
When my aunt passed away on a weekend with no management present,
I didn’t even get a phone call of condolence, not one single call. Only a letter written 2 days after my aunt passed away with her final bill! This company are only interested in the fees being paid and has no compassion. I would not have any other relative in Akari Care ever.

My father was transferred to Westerleigh Residential Home on the 23rd of December 2021 from the hospital, after contracting Covid-19. From my first contact with the care home manager, I was immediately assured that my father would be very well cared for and upon meeting all staff, I have been extremely
impressed by the care and attention my father has received. All staff are very professional and go out of their way to make relatives and residents feel safe, happy and ensure all their needs are met. The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and positive.

My parents and father-in-law have been residents at Westerleigh for some time now and I have found the staff to be very approachable and caring. They have had to deal with Covid and staff shortages this year more than ever, on top of having to look after people with complex and often challenging needs.

All the staff were very helpful with my gran. Westerleigh was always kept spotless. The man dealing with gran was excellent with sorting a place out for her, he was friendly kept you up to date with anything. Overall a lovely place with wonderful staff.
