I was so disappointed with the care at Chestnut House, I felt I had no choice but to take my mum from there. Despite being promised that there would be daily activities for the residents, there were none during the fortnight Mum was there. Yes there were boxes of jigsaws and Dominoes on shelves but
I did not see staff get them out and engage with the residents (I went at various times of the day from early morning to later in the evening). In fact, I played Dominoes with one resident and he became much more animated. Ensuring residents have stimulation is as important as making sure they are clean and fed.
Cleanliness is also hit and miss. On a couple of occasions, there was a strong smell of urine in the home, including my mum's own room. I also had to ask for her hair to be washed as it was very greasy. I found communication poor e.g I was not informed of the outcome from the District Nurse's visit.
I have raised these issues with management and hopefully things will improve.

My uncle moved to Chestnut House a couple of months ago. Thankfully he has settled in well. The bedrooms are quite spacious with plenty of storage space. Windows have safety locks. Lovely staff who all engage with my uncle with respect and friendliness. Activities such as jigsaws, dominoes, and crafting
are available. Also, they had pie and a pint last month. Nothing seems to be too much trouble, including arranging for my uncle to have an eye test there.

I feel very welcome when I visit Chestnut House, the home is warm and friendly, and we are all on first-name terms. The staff are always pleasant and accommodating. My husband is well fed, clean, and cared for, sometimes a little bored and sometimes not very happy.
If I could highlight anything it
will be my husband's bedroom it's definitely dated and could do with a bit of upgrading.

My husband seems very happy. He can be difficult in the morning, so sometimes not shaved as often as liked. Otherwise no complaints.

This home is so nice. Staff are excellent.
Food is great, rooms beautiful, nothing is too much trouble for them.
I visit anytime, any problems they let you know straight away.
My mother would not move home now.
This is great peace of mind for the families.

My mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's two years ago. Mum was sent to Chestnut House as an emergency case because her mental health was deteriorating. They made what was a difficult process much easier. They are caring, well organised and incredibly nice. Mum is Ok. She is being well looked after, fed,
warm and cared for and I appreciate it so much.

It would be nice to see some more activities in place for the residents. There doesn't appear to be anything to stimulate. The staff work very hard but rarely have time to do other things but one-to-one with personal care. The home is always clean and tidy and so are the residents.

We as a family have had issues with the performance of 2 members of the care team but the manager and the deputy manager have been excellent with dealing with the matter and both staff in a prompt professional manner.

Generally excellent care. Staff are all very caring and Mum looks as contented as we can hope for.

Mum's room needs a decorative update which was started but still not completed after 2-3 months and disappointed at the lack of activities within the home.

Since mum has been in Chestnut House (7 months) she has settled in lovely. Gone has all her anxiety she has from suffering from, even though sometimes she doesn't acknowledge the family. She always has a great laugh with all the staff who go above and beyond to make her happy. We know she is in safe
hands and well looked after/after the previous year when Alzheimer's took over her life completely we knew we had to make the right decision on placing her here. Waiting for a place for my dad who is in another home at the moment, so they can spend the rest of their lives together in a homely atmosphere.

I am so relieved to see how happy and well cared for my mum is in the few months she has been a resident. The management and all the staff are extremely caring and very approachable, it's always a very difficult and upsetting time for the family of loved ones when having to make the decision about their
care, finding somewhere loved ones will be happy.

Chestnut House is highly recommended and are doing a brilliant job, there are like family.
Thank you.

Chestnut House has a happy, safe atmosphere with excellent, friendly members of staff. With a few improvements, the overall standard would be beyond excellent. Often, when visiting my nan, I see her happy, smiling and laughing, which is all we wish for. It would be nice to see more activities however,
and for my nan to be encouraged to participate. As a family, we would also like to see her bedroom improved.

My late mother came to Chestnut House five months ago and our family felt that all the staff treated her with great understanding and dedication. During the last two weeks of her life -October 2016 - she, and us as a family, were treated with care and compassion. Thank you so much.

Current Review Score: 8.0 (8.027)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.0 (8.027) out of 10 for Chestnut House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.9 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.917 for Chestnut House is calculated as follows: ( (26 Excellents x 5) + (27 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 72 Ratings = 3.917

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.11 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Chestnut House is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 41 registered maximum number of service users is 8.2. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.2 = 0.61

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
