Gwynfa is a specialist accommodation setting that provides care for 17 people in the quiet Llanishen area of Cardiff. There are excellent links to local transport and amenities.

24-hour care and support are offered at this high-quality residency for people who have experienced poor mental health.

The home is based within a large three-storey house with sizable communal areas, such as residents' lounge and gardens.

Gwynfa is close to all amenities, within short walking distance to banks, post offices, hair salons and supermarkets. The location has very good connections to Cardiff town centre by Cardiff bus and the national train link. Gwynfa enjoys a good relationship with the local community including most of the shops and banks in the village.

There are a wide variety of activities from outings to themed nights in and colleagues / team members encourage all residents to get involved in the day to day activities and so enriching their lives while here at Gwynfa.

Gwynfa and Hafod believe in a homely atmosphere and all colleagues / team members strive to give a person-centred approach to the care they provide to each individual who lives here.

There are plenty of activities for the people who access Gwynfa's services to participate in and the home's chef prepares a nutritional and delicious daily menu of food for residents to enjoy.

Since I came here I have been happy for the first time in my life and I feel relaxed like I've never felt before. I want to thank all of the staff for being so amazing and for caring, and the residents too.

I came to Gwynfa in October 2020 after a spell in hospital resulting in some problems I experienced following an eye operation. I initially spent two weeks in isolation at Gwynfa. After that, I was at first reluctant to socialise with other residents, being a bit self-conscious. In the end, I did socialise,
sitting in the lounge to watch TV and eat communal meals and made several good friends. The staff have been excellent and I am satisfied with my room. I can shower by myself. I joined a trip to Barry Island and I have participated in arts and crafts sessions. I have a CD player and enjoy writing and drawing.

Staff are friendly, helpful and always ready to help with any problems that I or the service user has in regards to his care and life skills. They have been very good during the Covid pandemic as my nephew found it very difficult, especially as the restrictions were hard for him to come to terms with.
My
nephew has problems but on the whole, is quite happy living in Gwynfa, hope this will carry on in the future.

Gwynfa is an excellent care home which offers a safe and secure environment for people suffering from mental health problems. It is very caring, homely and the staff are all friendly and helpful. It allows the residents to feel safe and secure whilst retaining the freedom to come and go as they please.
The shops and cafes at Llanishen are only a short walk away. Varied outings and day trips are organised. There are also lots of events held at the home for the residents and their families to enjoy together. There is a friendly resident dog at the home and a dog walking rota so the residents can enjoy looking after and walking the dog which I believe is very beneficial. I would highly recommend Gwynfa to anyone who is looking for this type of care home.

Job Title: Home Manager

I have worked at Gwynfa for twenty years. I started as a support worker and worked my way up. I enjoy my role, although I have found it very challenging, particularly over the last two years with the pandemic. I enjoy the way that every day is a new day and different from the last. I enjoy being with our residents and helping them live as independently as possible and improving their quality of life. I feel supported in my role from the RI and from other Managers. Hafod is a good company to work for as it embraces the aspirations of its colleagues / team members.

My name is Abbie and I have worked at Hafod for almost 4 years. I started off as a domestic cleaner and then moved onto care. I am now working as a part time senior alongside being a carer. I heard about this job through a friend and that’s how I got the job.

I work in Gwynfa which is a mental health residential home and I absolutely love working here. Being a part of the Hafod team is the best choice I’ve made as there are many perks and lots of support offered, also many opportunities to move forward in my career.

Everyone I work with at Gwynfa are lovely and I’ve made some amazing work friends. My manager Helen always goes above and beyond to help and support team members / colleagues as much as she can. Overall, this is the best job that I have had and I plan on staying here for as long as they will have me!

Job Title: Senior Care Assistant

I used to work on scaffolding and l always felt achy after a full day, so asked a friend who worked in Hafod. I applied and got an interview date; the rest is history. I have worked for Hafod now for approximately 29 years and have never looked back. I began as a support worker and then to my present job as a senior in a residential home.

I have many colleagues and all of them are such a godsend, My Manager is Helen, and she is a rock, also a very nice person to work under. My deputy manager is a great person, if I need anything, such as training or support I need only ask.

I work supporting and offer care to many different residents and there is not one day that's the same, I think that's why I enjoy the work, each day has its own set of tasks and this is what I find so satisfying.

There is a lot of diversity within my work, and it is gratifying. it is this what makes this job so important to me.
I would recommend anybody who is looking for a change in their work to apply, you will never look back

Job Title: Chef

In 2008, Gwynfa were upgrading their catering operation. I arrived as an agency chef to cover a cook they had recently employed who had left. After proving myself, I was offered the job. The rest is history.

I am a Chef as my qualifications, experience and skill set dictates. I organise and plan menus, order and take delivery of stock within a set budget. I prepare, cook, and serve nutritious meals, taking into account residents’ personal preferences. I clean and maintain and follow all HACCAP regulations, working to a very high standard.

I find my role rewarding and satisfying, my work is regularly appreciated by both our residents and management. Sometimes challenging and relentless, I mostly work alone and occasionally there are not enough hours in the day.

Job Title: Senior Care Assistant

I had been previously worked as a general office administrator for a small company. When this company went under, I was left unemployed. Whilst searching for employment, I came across an advert in the local newspaper, for a care assistant at St Isan’s. I thought that I would give it a go and apply. (I was a bit fed up with office work and fancied something different).
At my interview, I was asked if I would mind, if I was offered a position in a care home for residents with mental health problems. Initially, I was a bit apprehensive, not knowing what to expect. I accepted the position regardless, thinking that I would give it a go.

I have been with the company now for twelve and a half years. I love my job and have worked my way up to senior care. I have completed my levels two, three and five QCF. I have decided to stay in my position as senior care assistant, even though there have been opportunities for me to progress further, because I love the job that I am doing.

Hafod are a good company to work for. They respect their workforce and the work that they do.
