Plas-y-Garn is an elderly care facility that specialises in providing residential and dementia care for people aged 65 and over.

The home has two self-contained areas accommodating 16 dementia and 16 residential residents. The home's two communities consist of a lounge, dining/kitchen area, bathroom with bath hoists, two toilets and eight single bedrooms, which residents are able to lock if desired.

All residents’ individual accommodation is fitted with a wardrobe, lockable chest of drawers, bed, bedside cabinet and sink unit as standard. Each room has a light fitting located over the bed, a vanity mirror and a ceiling light with dimmer. All bedrooms are fitted with room call systems and each resident can be given a neck pendant if they feel the need to wear one.

The home looks to contribute to local community life in any way it can, to the benefit of people who wish to pursue a fully independent lifestyle. In-house events and outings are also popular amongst the people who access the services, including the weekly Zumba sessions and regular visits from local schools.

Colleagues / team members undergo specific dementia training to ensure each person is treated as an individual and their desires are understood and carried out.

Every time I've visited this care home, I have been very welcomed. The staff are friendly, efficient and very caring. I have had a mother-in-law staying here and she had the same care as my close friend.

Throughout the pandemic the staff have strived to keep their residents and carers safe and protected.
The protective restrictions added difficulties in visiting residents but they have always managed to accommodate whenever possible.
The carers always look to support and care for the residents with
dignity and kindness.

My mother spent 14 months at the Plas-y-Garn care home before passing away at the age of 104 years. In the whole of this period, she was given excellent care, notwithstanding the difficulties the care home experienced because of the Covid pandemic. We were impressed with the effort made to provide stimulating
activities for the residents and to show the activities on social media, a useful way of allowing relatives to see their loved ones participating. Communication with relatives was good, particularly with updates on the care home. and status during the pandemic.

Plas-y-Garn is clean and tidy, the staff are always polite and helpful to my mum. The rooms are always kept well and are immaculate. Due to Covid, it has been difficult to get access which is understandable, but hopefully, activities should be started so that residents have more interaction with other
outsiders. Also, more varied choice of food available, please.

My mother's care is wonderful. Dignity, compassion, kindness, fun, and love are very much part of her life.

The staff were all very friendly and considerate. Working under difficult Covid restrictions they did their best to help me cope with the decision to put my husband of 51 years into the home. He was very happy there and he thought that he was in a hotel. His dementia was challenging but the staff were
amazing with him. Sadly his condition worsened so he had to leave their care. I would recommend the home for a loved one.
I cannot comment accurately on some of the criteria below as Covid restrictions applied.

My mother moved to Plas-Y-Garn (Care Home) into their EMI residential unit in February 2021. She did not want to go into residential care but we were no longer able to cope with her support needs in our own home. Going in was a difficult experience as the Covid lockdown was in place and, due to restrictions,
had to be handed over to the care staff at the entrance with her belongings. We were not able to go in and see her room or settle her in. However, the manager and staff have been extremely supportive of my mother and our family and their communication, advice and support has been exemplary. The process of settling in remains a challenge, as it inevitably was going to be in the face of my mother’s Lewy Body Dementia but the efforts of the staff have made this as bearable as these circumstances could be. Our heartfelt thanks to all concerned.
Some of the scoring is due to the limitations imposed by the lockdown.

Despite the challenging times over the past few months in regards to COVID 19 the care at Plas-y-Garn continues to be outstanding that they give to my mother and other residents. I am aware of the challenges in regards to the pressures that COVID 19 brings and the quality of care that has been maintained
has been that of an extremely high standard. I received a copy of the Risk Assessment that is undertaken when family and visitors who visit. This risk assessment is detailed in the aspects of:

Control Measures in place
Any further controls that may be needed to be put in place.
This risk assessment gives my family and I great reassurance in knowing that the preventative measures that are being assessed are robust in preventing any risks in any spread of COVID 19 into the care home setting and environment. All care staff have been proactive and outstanding in their care delivery and always act in my mothers best interests. A big thank you.

What a lovely care home. The staff are amazing. Very welcoming couldn't ask for more. My mother was very happy to go into a care home for respite, for 4 weeks. The staff rang in the afternoon which was reassuring, as I had worried all day but they put my mind at rest. Thank you.

Since going into this home, my father in law has changed remarkably. He is back to being a happy, jolly old man. The staff follow his wishes. He doesn't get up early, they let him get up in his own good time.
We were hesitant to put him in a home but he is so happy there, it was the best we could do
for him!

This home was chosen by myself and sister for our mum and as a family, we have no regrets in choosing this home. Having had no previous experience of care homes we looked at a number of care homes in the locality. During the 5 years that mum resided at Plas y Garn, she was treated with the respect and
dignity she deserved. The staff were very efficient and friendly making our visits very comfortable and welcoming. Mum's needs were always considered and we felt very comfortable leaving mum in their care. We were regularly kept updated of any concerns whether that was health-related or difficulties experienced given her Dementia. Sadly, we were faced with an end of life situation earlier this year and the manager and staff went out of their way to ensure that mum remained at the home as opposed to hospital and the help and support we were given was overwhelming.
Given our experience, the manager and staff should be very proud of the care they provided.

David Daniels

Job Title: Home Manager

Joined: 2018

Hi. My name is David. I have worked in the care sector for 14 years after being made redundant from an electronics company after 18 years. I began working as a care assistant in Mental Health rehabilitation. I felt I had a natural flare for this kind of work and quickly set about obtaining my qualifications. Within 5 years, I had completed my QCF 5 in Health and Social Care and progressed to the role of Registered Manager.


During the following years, I worked with people with acquired brain injuries and later learning disabilities. After a short break from the managerial role, I started work for Hafod as a senior care assistant. I have been with the company for around 4 ½ years and have worked my way back through to the position of manager. I find working and supporting residents with dementia so rewarding and making a difference in their lives.


Outside of work, I am married with 2 children and a proud owner of 2 dogs: Louis and Bella. I am a keen reader of autobiographies and spend most of my evenings reading or watching sports. A very avid Spurs supporter.

My name’s Rhian, I’m the Deputy Manager at Plas Y Garn, I am married with three children, one at University, the other two still at home.


I’ve worked in Plas Y Garn since October 2021 and in Hafod since January 2020.


I was a Mental health Nurse back in Norfolk, working in a range of settings, from Adults to children and Adolescents. I worked for the NHS, working anywhere from Prisons to A&E. Before moving to Wales, I was working as a Matron in a large state-run boarding school, working in the houses and manning the medical centre.


I’ve recently returned to work in care because I always imagined I would, knowing this was where I always felt most comfortable.


The staff I work with at Plas Y Garn have been incredibly welcoming and straight away made me feel part of the team. They clearly have a true passion for what they do and make working at Plas Y Garn a pleasure.

I started working at PYG when I was 17 as a care assistant, working with residents who have dementia. Through Hafod’s training, my hard work and commitment I progressed to a full time senior care position. I have worked at PYG for 35 years and can honestly say I am proud of my achievements”.

Sue has been in post since February 2019. Sue’s background is predominantly working for the Local Authority in Social Services, working alongside residential staff, day care staff, domiciliary services and the voluntary sector, ensuring staff are qualified to carry out their job roles within their care setting. Sue totally understands the importance of activities for all the residents at PYG to keep them motivated, encouragement involvement and interaction with other residents and staff.
