Cartref is set in a rural area, surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to the river Wye.

It is a small friendly home with an experienced and unified staff team. The residents are at the centre of everything they do and they wish to treat each person with kindness and to respect their unique needs.

They organise a variety of activities according to residents’ individual preferences and interests. They encourage residents to contribute their own skills, experience and ideas and hold regular residents’ meetings. The home organises outings to the nearby Garden Centre, library, luncheon club, Thursday Market, HayDay Café’ and nearby churches.

They have close links with their local community, every 1st and 3rd Friday they host Tea and Chat afternoons when they invite people from the town to join in for cakes, chat and various activities and entertainment.

Cartref hosts regular church services for those who wish to attend and frequent musical concerts. They enjoy weekly visits from Hay Primary school children, the local librarian and volunteers from other community groups.

All the staff are well trained and genuinely caring. The communication between the staff and family is excellent and the manager is friendly and efficient.

I regularly visit Cartref to hold an informal and meaningful church service. With a group of residents we sing hymns together, have a Bible reading with a short and encouraging message and a prayer. The leadership and staff are so friendly and helpful each time I visit. I also must say that staff interaction
with the residents is excellent. I see first hand the respect and friendliness that is shown to residents, which is professional and supportive. They really care about the residents and are always there to respond to their needs. Definitely five stars.

I arranged for my husband to become a resident at Cartref after five years of him becoming more and more withdrawn, following ill health and retirement. Doctors gave him various anti-depressants and other treatment for depression, none of which helped. Moving him to Cartref has made a huge difference
and he is returning to his previous, cheerful self. All the staff at Cartref are wonderful, so kind and helpful with nothing being too much trouble. I cannot thank them all enough.

I have found that Cartref Care Home (Hay-on-Wye) is very, very good. I really can't fault what they do. My brother is so happy there. All staff are very kind and caring. Nothing seems too much trouble. I could recommend it to others.

Mum has been in Cartref Care Home for nearly a year. She says that the food is good and the staff are very kind and caring. There are some events and activities such as trips and visits from singers etc. There is a small garden for the summer. Her room (single, en-suite) looks fine. However, the best
and most important feature of Cartref is the excellent staff who are very caring.

I could not ask for a better place for my father to live. I chose Cartref Care Home, after visiting several homes, because it had the best atmosphere and all the residents seemed happy and content. It is a small home and all of the staff seem to enjoy their jobs and are dedicated to providing a high
level of care. They treat the residents with great dignity. The food is excellent - homemade and of very good quality. The bedrooms are cheerful and there is a good range of activities. I'm very glad I chose Cartref.

My mother has been shown so much care and kindness. Every member of staff really communicates with residents and focuses on individual needs. She has been helped to make her room as close to home as possible and has all her pictures and ornaments.
She loves the catering and tea parties for events
and birthdays. Cannot thank all at Cartref Care Home enough.

Lovely welcoming home; staff are friendly and caring and nothing is too much trouble for them. The last couple of years has been very hard with covid, staffing etc but they’ve never failed in their caring of the residents. In December it was my mum's 100th birthday and they gave her a wonderful party
to say the least. I cannot fault the care given from top to bottom it’s wonderful

Since my sister has been at Cartref she has been very happy with the staff and her care. I have found the staff very helpful and during Covid they have been happy to have her in their care, whilst not seeing her and only speaking on the phone.

My mother arrived at Cartref when we were in full Covid-19 lockdown so I have not been inside the home. All staff have been very friendly and helpful. I can ring and speak to my mother on the telephone and also see and talk to her through the window.
I call with items for my mother most weeks and I'm
always greeted with kindness. Keep up the good work through these bad times. Excellent home.

Covid restrictions in place - high standards regarding visiting.

My late sister-in-law was a resident for 5 years at Cartref Care Home, in that time she was treated with kindness and respect. The staff were always most helpful and pleasant to my late husband and myself. We made friends with another resident and visited him regularly after my relative died. I would

As a Support Worker at Cartref, it is a privilege to be able to support our ladies and gentlemen in their everyday lives. Throughout my career, I have met and cared for some truly amazing individuals and I love nothing more than hearing their stories and learning from their experiences. Our residents become our family, as we become theirs, and there is something very special about caring for people who truly appreciate the work that you do. For us at Cartref, it does not feel like a job, and that is a joy in itself.

My name is Linda – I am the Senior Cook at Cartref. I have worked in the catering and hospitality industry for many years and I am very proud of the food and service that we provide at Cartref – everything is fresh and home-made, just as it should be. Since joining Team Cartref, I have been working very hard to develop our community links and I am thrilled to say that we now have fantastic relationships with local businesses and alike. We are currently working on an intergenerational project with our local school children – this has been a great success and our ladies and gentlemen love seeing the children on a weekly basis. In addition, we have drama club, book club, knit and knatter, bingo, quizzes, and musical movement and we are visited weekly by Holly, our wonderful singer. There is always so much going on at Cartref and it really does boost everyone’s spirits I am just so happy that I get to be a part of it all.
