Scoonie House is a charming Victorian home sympathetically converted to provide residential care for up to 36 elderly residents providing residential and palliative care on a permanent and short stay basis, trial stays are also available.

Located in a central yet tranquil area in the heart of the seaside village of Leven, the home is ideal for residents wishing to protect their independence, while enjoying the attention of a friendly and professional team of carers and an activities programme that promotes quality physical and emotional health.

All staff are dementia trained and work hard to establish an environment where residents feel safe and respected. This specialist training also extends to the hospitality team and chefs who are able to stimulate senses and increase creativity in the cooking and presentation of food, providing the best possible dining experience for residents living with dementia and or dysphagia.

My dad has been in Scoonie House for three years on the 24th January. He likes it as much now as the first day he arrived. Dad is quite content, he said that Christmas and New Year was one of the best he has ever had. He also said that all the staff work very hard to make his life comfortable. My husband
and I think it's a great home, very friendly, very clean and comfortable.

This is my second review of my mother's care at Scoonie House following yet another respite stay there. The staff are just wonderful to her and she is very happy there. The whole family are delighted about how she has settled to having respite stays at Scoonie House and I am delighted with all aspects
of the service. Having confidence in knowing my mother's needs are being met, allows me to holiday with my grandchildren without any worries about her being upset or difficult (which she can be). I understand that each home is different but for me when I go to Scoonie House, it feels like someone such as my Mum has arrived home as opposed to going to a home. Formality is replaced by a warm welcome. Last time I took her there she was whisked off to join others for lunch - during the short period while I took her bag to her room, she had settled to talking to others at the table to the extent she just offhandedly waved me goodbye. That is what I call a result!

Mum moved into Scoonie House in October 2004. From the first day, the staff treated her with warmth and dignity. She was cared for to a high standard. The management and her team do a wonderful job and I would strongly recommend to people looking for a care home.

Scoonie is an excellent home with very friendly and helpful staff.
We have just had my aunts 100th birthday at Scoonie organised by a member of staff - a great job and provided organised publicity and visits by councillors.

A 90th birthday tea party had been arranging for the female resident, but the usual visiting hairdresser to the home was ill and my relative's hair was badly in need of styling for the 'big day'. One of the regular care staff offered her skills and on the morning of the party took time to wash and style
my relative's hair in the home's hairdressing room at no extra charge, even though the end result was every bit as good as that of a professional hairdresser: an illustration of the commitment to care of the staff at Scoonie House.

Every member of staff assisted in the settling in of our friend, and this was achieved very quickly with their help. It is reassuring that our friend's wellbeing is obviously paramount to them as any health concerns are addressed swiftly and we are updated constantly. The staff are very caring, understanding
and patient with the residents and the excellent rapport they have with them all is evident. They are always so friendly and helpful to us and willingly give their time no matter what is asked of them or how busy they are.

Melanie

Melanie Macdonald

Job Title: Manager

Melanie is responsible for the day-to-day running of Scoonie House Care Home. She oversees all activities within the home and ensures the quality of the service and care provided exceeds the standards set by the regulators The Scottish Care Commission. She ensures that residents have the possibility to participate in the day-to-day running of the home to ensure that they get what they need from the home and for the home to ascertain what is important to the residents.


She enjoys developing ways to promote her resident's rights and responsibilities and providing information, advice and support not only to the residents but also to their families and her staff. She arranges stimulating activities and encourages residents to get involved to foster a sense of independence. She creates opportunities for residents to contribute to the local community and access local services giving them a sense of freedom and belonging.


Melanie particularly enjoys the array of daily tasks that are expected of her and spending time with so many different kinds of people. She also understands the importance of developing her own personal learning on a day-to-day basis. With over eleven years of experience at Scoonie, Melanie is more than qualified to look after her residents! She also holds various certificates including food and hygiene and managerial qualifications.


As she has been at Scoonie for so long her invaluable contribution to the home is her vast knowledge and understanding of her home and her residents.


Melanie cites her biggest achievement as not only being present at her niece’s birth but actually participating in it! She was the first person to hold her niece after she delivered her on the sitting room floor!
