Haugh House is a small, tranquil residential care home, in the vibrant Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, close to the Royal Botanic Garden. It has a balcony which is a suntrap in summer, with lovely views of the Water of Leith.

The house is modern and purpose-built, with spacious accommodation for up to 15 residents.

Haugh House has a calm, serene atmosphere and typically suits residents who enjoy their independence and privacy, with each room offering its own en suite shower and kitchenette area where they can make their own teas and coffees when entertaining their visitors.

Residents have good links to the nearby Lifecare Centre in Cheyne St, which runs a programme of groups and activities. Café Life, situated within the Lifecare Centre, is also a popular venue with Residents for a spot of lunch or coffee and cake.

The home is part of community efforts to recognise Stockbridge as a dementia-friendly area, working with Stockbridge Parish Church. Residents enjoy going to the Carol Service there, and some have longstanding links with their own local minister.

Many of the residents at Haugh House have a professional background and enjoy relaxing, individual activities such as reading and watching films, or going out and about within the local community, supporting local businesses, such as Tariq’s grocery store, Tariq has been serving the Community of Stockbridge for over 20 years and is a weel kent face.

All staff at Haugh get involved with activities, both in-house and out and about, accompanying Residents to the hairdressers or barbers or just out for a walk along the Water of Leith or through the village.

The staff are proactive in caring to meet the needs of the residents and go out of their way to provide a caring environment and provide activities for the residents e.g. armchair keep fit and signing songs along to music. I could not ask for better care!

Haugh House has been great for my mum. She was really nervous about moving to a home but after an initial settling-in period, she has really started to enjoy it. It's a small home so they don't have the facilities of some of the larger ones but this is more than made up for by the individual care that
they are able to provide and the ability to get to know my mum, that the smaller setting provides. The manager and one staff member provide great leadership and their dedication really shows. In addition, the location is amazing, it's great to be able to take Mum out to the shops, the farmers market or the botanical gardens.

This may be a small care home; however, the service provided is caring and respectful. There is a small team of staff, and it seems like a stable group of employees. The facilities are quite basic compared to some of the other care homes, but it suits my mother's needs as she doesn't need the extras,
just compassionate care.

I spent three weeks respite in Haugh House, after having cared for my wife within our own home, after her diagnosis of Alzheimer's Dementia, for just over four years, completely on my own and throughout Covid and the Pandemic. I was very warmly welcomed by the Manager, Team Leader and staff and given
total respect and privacy at all times within my very warm, well laid out and comfortable room, which overlooked the Water of Leith on the ground floor. The Cook was very pleasant, creating many really delicious meals and always served up with a warm and caring smile. The night staff were also very accommodating and caring and always available if required. I would strongly recommend Haugh House for respite, with a lovely walkway along the Water of Leith.

My mum, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, has been a resident for over four years and has received outstanding care from all of the staff. There is a cheery welcoming feel about the home and every time we visit, we are greeted with a smile. The staff are always helpful with updates on Mum's health
and are very helpful with any questions we may have. Over the last couple of years, the home has been beautifully refurbished and Mum has a great room overlooking the river which makes her very happy. We recently celebrated Mum's ninetieth birthday and had a lovely party and sing songs. The staff do a brilliant job and are cheery, caring and compassionate. I would highly recommend this care home to one and all.

My husband spent two weeks in this care home. He was assisted with his shower and was treated very well with dignity and helped when needed. Visitors always treated with a friendly smile.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.250)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.250) out of 10 for Haugh House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.875 for Haugh House is calculated as follows: ( (44 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 48 Ratings = 4.875

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.375 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Haugh House is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 15 registered maximum number of service users is 3, which has been reached with 4 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
