Mum has been a resident for one year, initially able-bodied but now incapacitated as a result of a stroke. We have been impressed by the level of care and the knowledgeable staff have of each resident. Because we live at a distance, it is invaluable to know that she is receiving the care she needs.
The common areas downstairs have been beautifully refurbished and hopefully, the bedrooms will be next.

Reply from Margo Brunton, Home Manager at Lower Johnshill

Thank you for your feedback. I am delighted that you are impressed by the level of care and our knowledgeable staff. Please do feel free to come and discuss the activities and rooms when you next visit. We do have a range of activities to accommodate all residents but some will be enjoyed more than others. Mum is active in some of these areas but perhaps not in others. Any thoughts you are able to share would be appreciated.

We came here about ten years ago. A fall meant that she broke her hip and because of the memory loss, couldn't learn to walk, but the staff have been great, as I come in every day if possible. I can see that she is content and comfortable.

Please be assured that my door is always open, and on the areas, to where activities have been mentioned, I would be delighted to show you the new programme we have in place, and the active participation with our Tovertafel machine, which your relative has participation in and showed enjoyment. It will be a pleasure to provide a demonstration for you to see what this offers.

When those providing care exude genuine care and concern and deliver it in an unfailingly friendly manner, liberally laced with compassion, the resident responds positively and has an enhanced quality of life. As family we trust and we rest easier as a result.
That is Lower Johnshill in my experience.

Poor health has meant that my sister and her husband had to move her for additional care from assisted in an apartment.

The transition was seamless with every effort made to facilitate the move and to make the newcomer welcome and comfortable in new surroundings. The friendliness and efficiency of

the staff has been a real bonus, complementing a caring management.

My father requires daily assistance due to his Parkinsons and dementia associated with Parkinson.

Prior to my father moving to Lower Johnshill, he was in a care home in Yorkshire. There he had limited contact with myself (I live in Scotland) and other family members due to its location and their

work commitments. He was displaying signs of giving up on life, showed very little interest in day-to-day activities and was repeatedly asking to leave. This accelerated when his wife of 47 years died in May.

I was very fortunate that a room became available soon after applying to Lower Johnshill and my father was able to move in July this year. The difference it has made to his outlook on life is truly amazing.

He freely talks with members of staff and residents about his life and what he did for a living as well as being keen to discuss current issues he may have read or seen on the TV.

He is far more independent, has been able to take himself to the bathroom for example and walks well with his Zimmer frame to the lounge and dining room.

My father loves the fact that we can take him for walks around the grounds that he can see from his room and has commented on how well the signets are doing and is impressed that all nine have survived.

He is keen to show staff and other residents how to play dominoes (he is an ex-captain of his local league).

My father can be a bit fussy with what he will and won't eat and Lower Johnshill have been absolutely great in making sure he has a balanced diet that meets his needs (he is a diabetic) whilst giving him meals that he will eat and enjoy.

I would recommend MHA Lower Johnshill to anyone considering the future care for a family member. In fact, I am more than happy to tell anyone who will listen how great it is.

Staff friendly and attentive. Location very quiet and pleasantly rural. Residents appear well attended. Security and safety are adequate. Some more daily cleaning of limited utensils and surfaces in the apartment would be preferred.

Reply from Margo Brunton, Home Manager at Lower Johnshill

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review and providing information regarding your thoughts on the services we provide within MHA Lower Johnshill. It is lovely to read that you feel the grounds and surrounding areas are pleasant. We try to ensure that residents' rooms are homely and ask for the assistance of the family with perhaps items from their own home that have a special meaning and that are also familiar. We have found in the past that personal crockery and small kitchen items are of great help as residents feel that the kitchen is an important hub of family life. We have a cleaning schedule on a daily occurrence and also ensure that kitchen areas are kept to a high standard after meal service or when light refreshments are provided in residents' own rooms. Please do feel free to contact me if you feel that any improvements can be made.

Overall we are delighted with the care Mum is receiving.
The staff are very caring and helpful especially the day staff.
On occasion, Mum has rung for assistance during the night and has had to wait a long time for help.
She is very comfortable in her beautiful room.
The food is good but standards
seem to drop at a weekend - a sandwich for tea is not enough!
The activity on a Tuesday is excellent but would prefer music to accompany hymns at other times.

Mum has settled in well - she is comfortable and very well cared for by the staff.
The manager is always available and most helpful.
Facilities are good but meals seem to vary from good to disappointing - cold plates, luke warm food and tough meat!
On a couple of occasions, Mum has had to use her
buzzer during the night but failed to get a response.

Reply from Margo Brunton, Home Manager at Lower Johnshill

Thank you for your feedback. I am so sorry to learn that the food is at times disappointing which will be addressed with the team. I am also concerned to learn that your Mum had to use her buzzer during the night but that there was no response. This concern will be investigated.

Mum has been very well cared for in every way since entering the nursing home nearly a year ago. There is a good relaxed friendly atmosphere and staff are obliging, keen to help, support and reassure and work well together as a team. They communicate well with each other and with relatives. You feel
they are concerned with the whole person.

Good interaction with residents on part of staff. Activities especially singing is encouraged. Weekly service of Christmas worship led by a friendly Chaplin, knitting, quizzes.
En-suite rooms seem spacious with good sized window. Quality items of furniture pleasing to the eye. Large TV screen in separate
part of lounge. Books available to borrow and read. Food seems to be adequate. Nice afternoon tea with cake and biscuits and fresh fruit. Some of the easy chairs in lounge are a bit worn and some too low.

Reply from Margo Brunton, Home Manager at Lower Johnshill

On behalf of the unit we appreciate the time taken to complete the review survey, we are delighted with the renovation work which will commence January 2018 to which, part of this is the new furniture within the resident's lounge areas.

Would I recommend? I already have and wouldn’t hesitate to do so again. My mother passed her final months here and she loved it despite her failing health, which became increasingly challenging. It’s an incredibly hard time of life, but her care was absolutely superb, and the staff and management really
supportive. The life they gave her despite everything was the best it could be, and it really did become her home. All delivered with care, dignity and respect.

Mum has lived at Johnshill for over a year, following the closure of another home, where she was for over three years. As her condition has worsened, we have had a number of concerns, all of which have been addressed in meetings with staff and phone calls. Staff are cheerful and work hard, but there
are times when a few staff are in attendance. The programme of activities has also been cut, largely due to a cut in hours of the activity workers and chaplain. The regular activities such as singing and services rely on volunteers and have also been cut.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.109)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.109) out of 10 for Lower Johnshill is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.632 for Lower Johnshill is calculated as follows: ( (72 Excellents x 5) + (29 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.632

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.477 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Lower Johnshill is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 78 registered maximum number of service users is 15.6. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 15.6 = 0.577

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
