  • British Home - for people living with neuro-disability, London
British Home is a registered charity offering services that improve the lives of people living with neuro-disability: rehabilitation; residential care; respite support; and palliative care. Every resident at British Home has been affected by neuro-disability whether that is as result of accident or trauma, stroke, or a consequence of a degenerative condition or illness.

There is capacity for 80 people on site, with each resident having their own, private accommodation. Services are delivered through a multi-disciplinary team under the leadership of the Director of Care. As the nature of neuro-disability is unique to each individual, so the range and frequency of facilities and services people use will be tailored to their own needs and aspirations.

Every resident is able to access rehabilitation and reablement services, whether that is in their own room or in the therapy gym (or both). They support residents to use local amenities and shops, and visit community organisations, sports events and external facilities as appropriate. British Home also has a range of social activities on site. Alongside, dedicated social areas and extensive gardens, they also have a Chapel and Concert Hall at the Home.

Some of the home's residents stay only a short time until they move onto different accommodation, for example in an adapted home in the community, whereas for others British Home is a long-term home. For all residents, British Home provides a safe, comfortable and suitable therapeutic environment.

Shocking communication and very poor record-keeping of food/fluid intake. Room is not cleaned on a regular basis and has taken five days for an overflowing bin to be emptied. My sister does have complex needs and should be having physio on a regular basis but that does not happen. She does refuse when
asked, but physio is never offered the next day or on a constant basis.

We were met at reception by a lovely lady, we did our covid test and then were shown to our friend's room. I noticed the beautiful chapel and went outside to look closer, even did a video. Staff were patient. You had a lovely display in the window of Frosty to Snowman. The woodwork was amazing (stairs
and beams). The fountains outside caught my eye. Our friend seemed happy and well cared for. I thought it was lovely and so were the staff.

My review is based on first and second-hand knowledge experiences that both my sisters and I have had. There is a terrible lack of communication with the nursing staff. My sisters food and fluid charts are not completed properly and the fluid is all done on guesswork. Her room is often dirty as is the
bedding. She hates it there and has not been able to establish any good relationships with any of the staff except for one.

The staff and nursing staff go the extra mile. There are many volunteers who work every bit as hard as the staff to ensure the happiness and wellbeing of clients.
Great Programmes of activities, and shows rolling over the weeks. Relatives/friends sometimes pay a fee to attend, but the light classical
music event was well worth it. Very professional, as the money went to the charity for further activities in the year. The fun day was a great jamboree of entertainment from professionals and schoolchildren, everyone, residents, performers, stall-holders, dignitaries and staff were happy and smiling.
I have a very good friend who needs their attention to her ailments, and they never make me feel unwelcome.
When I have made suggestions, they seriously take them on board, and if appropriate forward you to the staff, medics and management who may be responsible in that case.
It is one of the best I have seen (in my younger days I used to travel the charity show circuit as an entertainer).

My partner, who was bariatric, was admitted to the home having had a long battle with a malignant brain tumour. He had been in hospital for almost two months before moving to The British Home. In hospital he was becoming very confused and could not get any rest, but once he moved into the home he was
instantly noticeably happier. Due to his condition he was not mobile, but his team of care workers made sure that he was turned regularly. I was instantly struck by the fact that they really cared for their residents. The atmosphere in the home was of warmth and love, all the staff seemed to go the extra mile to make you feel part of the family. The level of care was just first class. I was so glad that my partner was able to spend his final days in such a wonderful home. I cannot recommend the home more highly, truly amazing.

I have been visiting my sister at the home for 26 years and have nothing but praise for the home and the management running the home. Excellent care home to live in, if I ever needed to find a home for myself this would be it, hence why I chose this home for my sister. Very, very clean, good food and
you can always have a party when needed. Staff are caring and know the residents needs and very friendly I think that the activities couldn't improve with more trips outside, a lot all in house activities, quizzes, themed evenings, BBQ's. All in all an excellent establishment.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.750 for British Home - for people living with neuro-disability is calculated as follows: ( (9 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 12 Ratings = 4.75

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.039 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for British Home - for people living with neuro-disability is based on 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 = 3

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 127 registered maximum number of service users is 25.4. 1 Positive Reviews ÷ 25.4 = 0.039

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
