  • St Mark's Care Home, Maidenhead
St Mark’s, rated ‘outstanding’ in March 2019, is a purpose-built home welcoming adults in need of nursing, residential, dementia or palliative care. The home also offers short stays for those who are looking for a little respite or convalescence care.

The home is split into four areas, made up of three nursing floors and a dedicated dementia area which is pleasant and modern, each with dining rooms and lounges.

A secure garden ensures that residents can make the most of good weather, too.

Residents are welcome to relax in any part of the home and can enjoy a little pampering in the hair salon, catch up with family over a drink in the bar or read a book in one of the quiet lounges.

The activity rooms are where residents can get creative, and there is a reminiscence room for rediscovering memories. There is a good-sized garden for anyone who wants to take a stroll and an enclosed sensory garden which is great for residents living with dementia.

Meals are made using fresh ingredients and residents can choose to eat in privacy or in dining rooms that overlook the gardens. Mid-morning hot drinks and homemade cake is also available.

Residents’ voices are woven into everything the home does, thanks to the resident and relative committee.

Residents can still do existing hobbies here and are welcome to suggest something different to try, as a group or on their own. Many activities are organised for mental and physical stimulation, including musical afternoons, arts and crafts and bingo. Movie afternoons are popular and there is a mobile library.

My mother-in-law was at St Mark's for nearly 2 years. Her brain was completely sharp until her last day, but she was unable to walk or transfer. She needed to be treated with respect and as a 'normal' human being. She was a perfectionist and had high standards. Staff in the Ascot Suite coped very
well with her emotional needs, which were often more challenging than her physical ones. Although very busy, many staff became friends to her and to the family. I was there at least twice a week and could see how well run and caring it was. Any problems were usually connected with her frustration at not being mobile. Her main complaint was that staff didn't have time to sit with her for a long chat and that there was too much food! She chose not to attend activities but enjoyed giving Bible readings at the communion service. She enjoyed sitting in the well-maintained garden. We couldn't fault the way she and the family were looked after on the day she died, which was a very long day.

The vast majority of the staff are exceptional - kind, respectful, efficient, warm and affectionate with patients. Really nice environment and garden. Always welcoming to family members and supportive of their concerns and anxieties. When it came to end of life, they were there in the background when
we needed them but gave us privacy to spend our last hours together. Wonderfully sensitive.


I got the sense that many of them saw beyond the dementia to the person that my father had been. They never made a fuss when he got aggressive about personal care. Took it all in their stride and treated him with the utmost dignity and humanity.


Sometimes there was a lack of communication between GP, nurse and family, but otherwise good.


I put value for money "don't know" only because all care homes are cripplingly expensive.

A very efficient and friendly care home which inspires confidence at the outset. The accounts department is extremely well run and financial matters are very clearly explained. The nursing care is exemplary with full backup from the surgery. Not only did the resident (my mother) receive unlimited kindness
and care, but we relatives were supported brilliantly at all times. The fact that animals are welcome visitors gave joy and added to the family atmosphere of the home.

My opinion is the standard of St Marks Care Home is very high and has not changed after two years of my Husband staying here.
The staff are on the whole usually very good, but there is sometimes (often at weekends) a shortage of staff or agency staff

I found all the staff charming and helpful. My resident friend, although he was very happy with St Marks at first, he became very difficult and unhappy. Personally I felt it was partially or mostly due to his inability to hear very much - he was profoundly deaf.

St Mark's has got to be the best home. The staff are fantastic friendly and kind. The food is great and the home is spotlessly clean. The care is excellent.

St Mark's sets the standard to which all such care homes might aspire. Without exception all staff are kind, caring, well trained, pro-active and good humoured. A true team under the excellent 'open door' policy of the manager. The care home isn't perfect but it comes pretty close. Top marks to St Mark's.

A wonderful buffet and entertainment was laid on at the nursing home to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday. I was particularly impressed by the way all the staff rallied round to make the afternoon such a success, they were all involved with attending to the resident's needs and creating a wonderful
atmosphere. I think I can say that a good time was had by all and it's all thanks to the dedication and organising skills of the staff. Well done.

I have just had a lovely afternoon at the garden party held to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday. At all times I visit, the staff are very welcoming and caring. My mother tells me that the carers are very good. This is quite a compliment from my mother who is very quick to complain if something is
not right!

Since mum arrived nearly a year ago I have had nothing but praise for everyone who cares for her in whatever capacity from house keeping, chefs team, activity girls, reception ladies and above all the carers and nurses. Mum's not a text book case and they have all tried to understand her needs and recognise
her capabilities.

The staff at St Mark's Nursing home are well trained and have always shown a great deal of respect and kindness to my mother-in-law. Nothing is too much trouble and they are always helpful. There are lots of activities for the residents that were very good and well planned. The home itself is spotless
and always smell fresh whenever we visit. I can highly recommend this home.
