  • The Dower House Nursing Home, Winchester
The Dower House is a purpose-built care home situated in beautiful grounds and gardens close to the historic city of Winchester and designed to cater for elderly people requiring standard residential or nursing care. Every bedroom has spacious en-suite toileting facilities, with five rooms having walk in shower facilities, a private telephone, free Wi-Fi and emergency call system. All permanent rooms are unfurnished and the team encourage residents to bring their treasured possessions from home, to make their room as homely as possible.

They offer high-class nursing care at a fixed price that does not change even if your care needs change.

All meals are cooked from fresh and local (when possible) ingredients. The kitchen team pride themselves in providing consistently high-quality meals which can be tailored to a resident's dietary needs.

The onsite laundry is in operation 7 days a week which provides residents with a quick and efficient service.

The home prides itself on having a professional, caring and considerate team of staff that will always go above and beyond to ensure their residents' comfort, safety and wellbeing. As you would expect from a family-owned and run company, they also provide a friendly, listening ear for residents’ loved ones, too.

A full and varied programme of activities is run throughout the week for residents to enjoy and participate in, such as speakers on various topics, recently they had talks on Tutankhamun, statues and monuments of London, and being a Zookeeper to name a few. The home also has a regular Pat Dog visits, musicians and quizzes to stimulate the mind.

The Dower House has a variety of amenities to offer, such as hairdressing salon, a quiet lounge, chargeable physiotherapy, and chiropody if requested, a small library and a lovely airy conservatory.

The Dower House is a very special and unique place that feels more like a very caring family run hotel than a nursing home. The care matron and the staff team that take of residents is exceptional and the high staff ratios mean they have time, not just to care and nurse, but to really get to know them.
Their genuine concern is evident to both residents and family members alike. Matron’s calm and professional manner gives confidence and reassurance to all.

The home is tastefully decorated and always has fresh flowers in the hall. The gardens are stunning and nearly all the rooms have their own garden access. The food is delicious and the pre-lunch drinks are a nice touch.

I cannot recommend this home and, more importantly, its staff more highly.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.526) out of 10 for The Dower House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.626 for The Dower House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (92 Excellents x 5) + (11 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 115 Ratings = 4.626

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Dower House Nursing Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 43 registered maximum number of service users is 8.6, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
