Mum was well looked after at Laurel Care Home. She has a lovely large room with patio doors and a window overlooking well-maintained gardens. She enjoyed her meals at the care home. Se enjoyed the camaraderie of living at Laurel Care Home. She liked chatting to everyone. Staff were kind. The home seemed
well run and has a family feel. Mum also enjoyed the musical entertainments, quizzes, sing a longs and trips out were a highlight.

My mum was admitted during the pandemic, and so, I have very limited insight into the home due to strict Government guidelines on visiting. I have only been in her room (and reception) a few times. I have found all staff have been very professional and friendly. Nothing seems too much trouble. Calls
are returned promptly, and I have been kept informed of changes. The few carers I have met have been cheerful and shown my mum kindness and dignity. I feel that the management has made difficult decisions, but have done so in the interest of the residents and staff. I look forward to meeting a lot more of the staff and getting to know the routines/facilities/menus etc.

At Laurel Care Home, my father was treated with kindness and respect. I feel their care staff and nurses are second to none and knew I could rely on them at all times to see to my dear father's complex needs professionally. The trips our to the seaside and visits from animals were a highlight. The entertainment
staff are lots of fun. They are supportive of residents relatives. The home is clean and welcoming. I am thankful to all staff of Laurel Care Home.

My late mother was a resident at the home for almost 4 years. The home is clean and pleasant with lovely gardens. Every member of staff were caring, friendly, approachable and supportive and treated Mum with care, dignity and kindness. The nursing care was excellent. All the staff were so kind and supportive
when Mum passed. I would have no hesitation in recommending Laurel to anyone.

The care home is excellent. I cannot fault it, and I am so pleased my mum is a resident here and not anywhere else. I felt reassured during the pandemic that she was being well cared for and supported. The staff are friendly and kind, and the support provided to relatives during this time has been excellent.

The care given to Mum is excellent, especially during this difficult time. Staff are friendly and welcoming, and rooms, communal areas are well looked after. The only issue I have is that if Mum has a hospital appointment, staff are unable to accompany her and give that the family are in full-time employment
and are all 2-hours aways, this becomes really difficult.

Reply from Felicity Dennis, Manager at Laurel Care Home

Thank you for your kind words about the care and facilities at Laurel Care Home. It is our pleasure to look after your lovely mum. Sadly during Covid restrictions and to keep staff safe in high-risk areas we were unable to escort Mum to her hospital appointment. We are happy to report we have now resumed this service.

My sister and I visited a number of care homes when our parents were no longer able to cope at home with our support. Laurel Care Home was the first one we visited and no other home came close. Our parents moved in May 2019, our mum sadly passed away in April 2020. The staff are lovely, my dad misses
my mum dreadfully, some of the staff go the extra mile and spend more time with him when he is having a sad day. The home is light, bright and airy and the staff always have a smile. The last year has been very challenging for the staff, residents and families but the team have done a great job keeping our loved ones safe.

My mother has been in Laurel Care Home since February last year. During the last year, the care home has been exemplary in applying the guidelines put in place by the Government. She has been very well cared for, and we have been provided with regular video calls, telephone updates and emails keeping
us well informed.

My wife came here direct from hospital following an operation for a broken femur. As she was also struggling to cope with brain damage and severe dysphasia, she didn't want to live and her body has gradually shrivelled up due to total loss of appetite. Laurel Care Home have been fantastic in giving
her genuinely caring and affectionate assistance and the nurses have done everything in their power to manage her pain. I couldn't wish for more from them.

This is an excellent home with hard-working, caring staff. My mother was a resident there for 18mths and I could not have been more happy with the care and attention received. We visited many homes when selecting a home and this one was so much better than the rest. Very well done to all of you and
keep it up.

My mother needed a short respite after a spell in hospital after having a fall whilst living at home and the Laurel offered her accommodation.
She suffers from mild dementia but likes to be independent as much as possible. I do not consider that her care at the Laurel met her needs. This resulted in
her spending most of her waking hours in her room either in bed, sitting looking out of the window or eating her meals. As the Power of Attorney, I expected to be informed of all aspects of her care but they failed to do so and this situation only changed after I made a strong complaint to the matron. I found the general staff friendly.
The transparency relating to financial matters was questionable.
I was very pleased to be able to transfer my mother to another rest home where residents are treated according to their needs, the result is that my mother is very content and spends most of her waking hours in the communal area, making friends and eating her meals.

Following these comments, I have reviewed all the resident's documentation and am happy to say we respected her wishes at all times throughout her brief stay with us. We trust our other reviews will balance this review and trust the readers will appreciate there are two sides to every review.

My aunt was a resident at Laurel Care Home for 9 months. She was 99 years old and very frail. The carers did a wonderful job and took the time to reassure her when she was anxious. All the staff were courteous and respectful both to my aunt and her visitors. I cannot recommend this care home highly
enough. My aunt was very happy there and I was able to entrust her care to them without any worries.

Mum has been resident at Laurel Care Home since November 2017. The home is beautifully decorated and has a wonderful garden. My mum relies on carers and nursing staff for all her needs. She is in the advanced stages of dementia. The staff treat her with kindness and show great respect for her dignity
at all times. They show tremendous patience as my mum is unable to communicate her needs. The staff and matron/manager give great support to us as a family. There is a very friendly, homely atmosphere.

My mum was admitted to Laurel Care Home following a terminal cancer diagnosis, and from the time she was visited in hospital to assess her needs to the time that she died, she was in receipt of excellent care and treated with dignity. All her medical needs were met, and her family supported and kept
informed. The palliative care she received was outstanding and each and every member of staff treated her with utmost respect and showed her empathy whilst providing excellent care.

This is a shining example of how care and a care home should be. The staff, accommodation and food here are great, the entire staff were always happy and helpful, which clearly was transmitted to the residents. Communication and time given to residents and relatives about their care was excellent. Activities
and excursions are on a regular basis, keeping the residents mentally and physically (where possible) active. My Aunt's care before and during end of life was always conducted with compassion and consideration for her dignity. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone.

My father spent 19 months in Laurel and was looked after very well by the staff and management. Everyone was very kind and showed patience and respect him at all times. They were also very friendly and considerate to other family members when they visited. I was kept informed of any changes regarding
my Dad's health throughout his stay. I was particularly impressed with the care and kindness shown to us when Dad received End of Life care during his last week. We were given much support at a very difficult time. Thank you to all at Laurel!

Being an only child, the care of my mother was very important. Towards the later years of Mum's life, her health became poor and everyday life and myself. The Laurel Care Home took all our needs into consideration, Mum's and mine. The total care package was amazing. Genuine kindness from every member
of the Laurels team. Mum needed the most intimate of personal care. This was always achieved with dignity. There was complete freedom to go from every are of the home. Full of appropriate fun and laughter. Excellent food and treats.

This is the third care home my wife has been resident in since January 2013. She is suffering with vascular dementia, which progressed to the point, in November 2017, where she needed the sort of care provided by Laurel. She can do nothing for herself and I find that the high standard of service provided
by Laurel for my wife is essential. The staff and management do their utmost to make life as pleasant as possible for the resident and always respect the wishes of the family.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.447)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.447) out of 10 for Laurel Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.797 for Laurel Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (97 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 118 Ratings = 4.797

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.65 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Laurel Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 12 = 0.75

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
