This attractive and professionally managed care home rated Outstanding in ‘Well Led’ by the Care Quality Commission in January 2020, has been supporting the local community of Ware for over fifteen years. Established and purpose-built with a positive reputation, Westgate House Care Centre offers quality nursing, residential, rehabilitation and dementia care in a peaceful but central location.

The long-standing home manager, who has been in post for over five years, leads an effective and stable staff group. This, and exceptional in-house training, ensures a skilled and responsive care team to meet the changing individual needs and expectations of every resident. With a caring and compassionate team, where nothing is too much trouble to help residents settle into their new home, the family ethos and the warm relationships the staff achieve are greatly valued by both residents and visitors.

Westgate House has some highly attractive and charming themed day areas in which to relax or socialise; these include the Garden Café – a firm favourite for those who like to enjoy a coffee and chat with the morning paper, the Cinema room, a Reminiscence room, and Café Pierre. Comfortable bedrooms have their own ensuite toilets and washbasins and the home’s showers and bathrooms are newly refurbished.

There are a number of outdoor spaces including a sensory courtyard for residents to benefit from and a separate garden for spending time with friends and relatives.

The facilities have been designed to enhance resident care and quality of life, to optimise cleanliness and help minimise the spread of any infections; this includes a natural ventilation system, wood effect flooring, hand washing facilities in every room and the use of hand gel dispensers throughout the home.

My ex-husband was admitted to the Dementia Unit at Westgate and he has asked me to express his appreciation to all the kind, caring staff.
He has now returned to his home and believes this is due to the excellent care he received during his stay.
His dementia hasn’t reached the stage where he needs
to live in a residential home yet but has said if it does, he would choose Westgate.
During my visits to him, I was impressed with the cleanliness, the food (back to a healthy weight!) and more than anything the lovely caring attitude I witnessed towards the patients.
He would like to say a special thank you to two particular members of staff.

Day time staff (Mon- Fri) are excellent in every way. The staff at night are not so good at the weekend and sometimes not helpful.

I was so pleased when I heard that I was coming here, as I had been here in 2017/18. Everyone here is so kind and helpful and it was so nice that most of the staff that I met last time were still here. An excellent place although not easy to find.

I came here for rehab on the 5th Feb and am delighted through the positive approach to my care and exercises and physio. I am deemed ready for home after 10 weeks in the hospital and this has been a refreshing experience and an excellent rehab experience and I am ready for the next stage of being home.

General experience good overall. Level of care provided by all staff was better than I expected based on previous perceptions of care home environments of which I had no previous experience. Special mention to the physio staff who gave me extra support to enhance my recovery and to the care staff many
of whom went beyond the basics to help me and my family. I would have no hesitation in recommending Westgate House Care Centre as a provider of residential care.

The whole experience was very good. I thought the whole staff were excellent in the way they conducted my 86th birthday - first class. The friendly attitude of the staff from top to bottom made for a good, healthy atmosphere.

The facility is very well run and the staff very approachable and easy to deal with. As a rest home, it was ideal, but we understood there would strenuous rehabilitation exercises and productive work which there wasn't. My father is a very energetic 86 years old and found himself bored but there are
reception rooms so could be his own fault.

Everybody is really nice and helpful, they are always keen on helping you even if they are busy or they have other patients assigned. For someone on a wheelchair like me, facilities are really comfortable.

My mother was in Westgate House for 3 weeks.
During this time all members of staff made her feel safe, secure and treated her with dignity at all times.

My 2 weeks at Westgate, first was given advice from 2 friends, having stayed here and there were reports to advice.
The staff have been top class, patient, kind and so helpful.
The food is very good, such choice too. I've added to my weight.
Not having relations, I wish a shop was here but staff
do get few bits I needed. (Thank you)

This relates to my experience of Westgate House in general and not specifically the intermediate care. Overall care, food etc was good. However, suggestions to improve matters: provide some kind of "shop"/trolley to provide necessities for those without family visitors. Make sure water is provided on
a regular basis in rooms and refreshed. Improve the quality of night staff. Have a clearer management of our unit at weekends when residents tend to feel a bit lost and neglected.

Greeted by welcoming staff, bright, modern reception. Our friend was sitting in a bright, cheerful dining room chatting. She showed us her room. Everyone was cheerful and friendly in the corridor. Our friend told us she was extremely pleased with the food and her care, she will be very sad t leave.

Having worked in the Health and Social Care field for 30 years in a variety of roles and environments, Nancy has had the platform to develop Westgate House in to a home that has a CQC ‘Good’ rating along with a fantastic staff team who support each other in making Westgate House an enjoyable place to live and work.
