Mum has had quite a few stays in The Elms over the past few years. I have found the staff, including the carers, nurses, housekeeping, laundry, cook and receptionist to be caring and friendly to Mum and us as visiting family. In recent weeks the manager and deputy have been really supportive in helping
me navigate Adult Social Care and the NHS in trying to get the appropriate support in place for Mum.

Reply from Lindsay Mahoney, Hospitality & Wellbeing Manager at The Elms Nursing Home

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. It is great to know that your mum and yourselves feel supported and cared for during her stays at The Elms. Across Hartford Care we work on a one team approach so it is great to hear that this is being recognised. It is also good to know that at times when you yourself need support the senior team are there to help. We will pass on your kind words to the team at The Elms.

Really pleased with the overall care and warmth you receive when visiting, we can clearly see how well our uncle is being looked after.
Be great to have volunteers dropping in for a chat, when family are unable to visit.

Reply from Lindsay Mahoney, Hospitality & Wellbeing Manager at The Elms Nursing Home

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. It is good to know how happy you are with the care and support your uncle is receiving at The Elms and that there is always a warm welcome. Your kind words will be passed on to the team at The Elms.

The Elms is a fantastic care home with excellent staff. My friend is very happy there and comments how caring the staff team are. I have always found management to be approachable and welcoming and would not hesitate to recommend this home. The home is decorated beautifully and when I have had meals
there they have always been tasty and hot.

My dear dad has end-stage Multiple Sclerosis and after years of caring for him at home, the very difficult decision was made to place him in permanent nursing care. This was a worrying time, as we had experienced poor levels of care from another home on the island when my partner and I were desperate
for respite, however; on admission to The Elms, our worries were quickly laid to rest, as the care and attention given to my dad is exemplary, and usually delivered with a smile, which can honestly make the world of difference! Dad prefers to stay in his room, which may I add, is bright, clean and comfortable, but he is never left for long without being checked which is invaluable for our peace of mind, and we are particularly grateful for the vigilance of the nurses if my dad's condition deteriorates. So a huge THANK YOU to the super-friendly reception and management team, for whom nothing is too much trouble and the wonderful carers and nurses who look after my dad so brilliantly!

Reply from Lindsay Mahoney, Hospitality & Well-being Lead at The Elms Nursing Home

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are sorry to hear of your previous experience of care for your dad and are happy that you have found the right home for him now at The Elms. It is wonderful to hear how you can now rest assured that your dad is being well cared for and supported. We are pleased to hear that although your dad spends most of his time in his room that his room is bright, clean and comfortable and that a member of the team regularly checks on him to make sure he is happy and comfortable and his needs are being met. We will pass on these kind words to the team at The Elms who no doubt will be pleased to hear this.

Mum has been in The Elms for 2 years. Initially, everything was great. The staff are excellent but standards have drastically slipped. There is no routine timetable or management. Things happen as and when if there's time. New staff are poorly trained, having spoken to several, they are also not happy
with this and feel inadequate to carry out their tasks.

Reply from Nikki Clark, Hospitality & Wellbeing Lead at The Elms Nursing Home

Firstly, I would like to send my apologies from the senior management team at the Elms, regarding your feelings around the standards dropping within the home. I would like to reassure you that we have management in the home daily, they are always available to meet or talk via telephone. All our staff are fully trained with an extensive induction programme, once this is completed all new staff are signed off as competent. We would like the opportunity to be able to meet with you in person to go through your points raised in the review. If you can contact the home directly then we would be very happy to arrange a meeting.

Generally pleased with the home. Wrong that the home takes the money given to my mother by the NHS for nursing care on top of the large amount she pays monthly. I should have been told about this at my mother's admittance with paperwork, I received neither. Off-site activities always seem to be the
same faces in the pictures, probably because they are mobile, do they pay extra for this privilege? Staffing levels often seem lower at weekends. Could do with water being available for residents in the lounge.

Reply from Nikki Clark, Hospitality & Wellbeing Lead at The Elms Nursing Home

Thank you for your valued review. We are pleased to hear that your overall review of The Elms is positive. We are always continuing to improve our service, therefore would love to take the opportunity to discuss the points in relation to funding and activities. Our dedicated management team will be in contact with you to discuss further. Thank you for taking the time to review our home.

We can't thank the entire staff of The Elms Nursing Home for taking care of our mother! She spent 3 months here at the end of her life and honestly the help and support we received at Elm’s was priceless! We appreciate all the night and day nurses that constantly checked on mum, all the lovely people
bringing mum tea or just coming in for a chat. And especially a huge Thank You to Elm’s Manager! You are an Amazing Human Being and you made the last days for our mum better! Thank You for all your invaluable advice, helping mum with English language and just being there next to her when we couldn’t. Thank you for giving mum a chance to have some happy moments when she took care of her little 'garden' on her balcony! We know that meant so much to her!
Another special Thank You to 3 care-ladies who comforted me as a daughter in the final moments. I wouldn't be able to survive it without you. I am forever grateful!
Bless you All!

From the second I arrived I was treated really well and felt welcomed.
The staff are fantastic, friendly, funny and brilliant. My constant banter with them all has been fun and made my stay very enjoyable.
The physiotherapy crew have achieved, in my view, a miracle to get me back on my feet and
walking and exercises that due to Spinal Muscular Atrophy is not an easy thing to do. I can not thank them all enough for all their professional support and guidance plus encouragement which has allowed me in only two weeks to be allowed to go home.
The meals here are absolutely delicious. Three meals a day plus biscuits or cake with your morning and afternoon teas and coffees. The meals are very tasty and the variety of dishes per week is excellent.
I will miss this place and especially all the amazing staff, every single one of them. I want to say thank you all for taking such great care of me.

It's wonderful to read your review of your stay at The Elms and I know the team there will be absolutely delighted to read it too! How great to hear that you were back on your feet so quickly, after only two weeks, and on your way back home. Your really positive comments will be so gratefully received by our wonderful team and I'll take great pleasure in passing them on. Warm wishes to you and I'm sure you were a pleasure to look after.

I spent six weeks at the home and received excellent care from the staff and physiotherapists. All the staff were cheerful and nothing was too much trouble for them. I was impressed with their attitude, and their friendliness helped me to settle in quickly, dispelling any fears I had about being referred
to a nursing home. I have much to thank them for.

I would put the Elms as one of the best homes on the island. The staff are friendly, very encouraging and so helpful. The food is excellent, plenty of choice with care taken for vegetarian foods. An amazing array of things to do every day. Rooms are super, good size and en suite. Lovely garden to sit
in and enjoy. It seems nothing is too much trouble, plenty available between meals and at night. My only criticism being the call system. This urgently needs attention, no repeat calling appearing to carers and no emergency call available. The change to the current system was not thought through. The Night Staff numbers definitely require looking at, repeatedly as few as two only, unfair to them and leaving residents unhappy/uncomfortable.

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback about The Elms. We are thrilled that you rate us so highly as one of the Isle of Wight's best residential care homes. We are very aware of the situation with the call system. We are working closely with the company that installed it to get the situation rectified as soon as possible.

As a person very experienced and qualified in providing care, I think I have a good judgement. It was with great reluctance that I accepted the need for care. Your staff continue to be very aware of ones needs and these they provide with efficiency, patience and cheerfulness, coping with all our requests.
In my opinion, I could find nowhere better. I would like to have a face to face discussion occasionally, maybe in a group but not everybody at once, say a group of four or five.

Because of staff shortages, the time-lapse between calling for assistance and getting it is excessive. Despite this, the staff are patient and tolerant in difficult situations. Their hard work is much appreciated.

I came into this home full of trepidation but was surprised to find how kind the staff were. They always used your first name, helped in any way they could and were always cheerful. The physiotherapy was first class and went above and beyond their remit to get me on my feet again, for which I am extremely
grateful.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.625)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.625) out of 10 for The Elms Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.400 for The Elms Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (49 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 80 Ratings = 4.4

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.225 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Elms Nursing Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.6 = 0.625

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
