Daycare wonderful. Food is very good. Night time poor because of the slowness of staff, waiting to come for ages.

Reply from Leah-Marie Mills, HR Director at The Elms Nursing Home

Dear JW,
We’re really pleased to hear that you feel the care you received during the day is wonderful and that you enjoyed the food. We have invested a lot into our food offer including further training for our chefs, as we know how important it is for people to enjoy their food and dining experience.
We are however sorry to hear that you had to wait at night time for staff to assist you, and since speaking to you about this, understand that this has now improved and you are happy with the care at night. We will continue to work with our staff to ensure all our residents feel they get the care and support they want in a timely way and to ensure we are continuously improving.
Thank you for your feedback and comments, it is very valuable to us in helping us to see what we do well and where we can improve.

The Elms was efficient, very ready to help swiftly in our time of need. Nothing was a problem. They overcame any difficulties for us. My mother was well looked after and I felt very supported at a difficult time.

Extremely clean and well run residential care home. Staff are very friendly and food is very good. The entertainment team in the care home are excellent. The rehab team does not have too many outdoor activities or indoor ones for that matter.
The rooms are of a very high quality and enjoy nice views
of trees, gardens and squirrels. It's good to have nurses on board in case of health worries.

We were a self-funding couple having respite care after both having bad accidents.
It took 4 days to get an extra heater in our room because we were cold.
We were woken up at between 7 am to 7.30am in the morning, but a cup of tea was not brought up, sometimes as late as 9.45am. The tea at bedtime
was very often only lukewarm, horrible.
Also, the towels were changed every day but bedclothes were only changed once in our 3 weeks.
The first week of our stay the food was quite plain, improved during the second week.

Reply from Louise Chandler, PR & Communications Manager at The Elms Nursing Home

Thank you for sharing your feedback. During your stay, our Regional Manager was happy to discuss any concerns with you, to put your mind at ease.
We were happy to provide you with an extra heater to make you comfortable within 48 hours after the risk assessment took place.
We appreciate that you had some queries regarding the food, and we provided you with meal options that you would enjoy. If you have additional questions or feedback, we would like to discuss it with you so please get in touch.
Best wishes

Mum's stay was for rehab/reablement after a broken ankle. The physio and occupational therapy has been thorough and given her a good level of mobility. Staff have always been helpful and cheerful nothing is too much trouble. Although mum is happy to be going home after an elongated stay, due to the
unavailability of a funded care package, she was happy during her stay at The Elms Nursing Home.

I had been sent to The Elms after treatment from hospital. I felt that I was supported by the staff and cared for. I felt relaxed to ask for any support. I felt my family were supported by the staff and encouraged to support me. I was at The Elms for nearly three weeks and felt well looked after.

I really can't put into words how to tell you about my stay except that everyone from laundry, cleaners, nurses, office then it's the carer's day and night went way and beyond the call of duty. Don't know how to say this but I class you all as excellent people and friends.

Mum came to The Elms Nursing home three years ago following a hip operation. The rehabilitation and care she received was second to none enabling her to live independently in her own home for three years.
Mum has now returned to The Elms as a palliative patient. When asked by the hospice nurse where
she would like to spend her final few weeks straight away it was The Elms, the care and friendly atmosphere is like coming home and I can relax seeing mum so happy.

We moved our elderly relative to The Elms as she was failing to thrive in another nursing home. Her admission to The Elms resulted in an immediate change. She started eating again and smiling - she became happy again and this remained the case for the years that she lived there. The relative was
an Oxford blue, very intelligent and determined and she was not easy to persuade. The staff at The Elms were outstanding with her. Thank you so very much for caring for her so well and making her happy and laughing again.

We had heard for years what a great place The Elms is. Your reputation is well deserved. I would add that I managed a care at home business for many years, so I know the issues involved, so I know what is involved in meeting the high standards of The Elms. Well done.

Feels like "home from home". Staff are very friendly, helpful and caring and professional. Mum always looks clean and well cared for. She seems very happy but due to her dementia does not interact very much.

My Mother lived in the Elms Cottages for 13 years and spent the last three years of her life in The Elms Nursing Home. She refused to live with any of the family as she said The Elms was her home. She liked all the Staff and never complained about any of them. I am a retired nurse and I could not fault
the high quality of care given to my Mum. This excellent care comes from the top. So my thanks go to the directors and the Matron who have set a high standard of care. The care given by all the trained nurses and carers was second to none. Not forgetting the administrator and her lovely team in the office, cleaning staff. Kitchen staff and laundry workers. They all played a role in making my mother's life happy.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.625)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.625) out of 10 for The Elms Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.400 for The Elms Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (49 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 80 Ratings = 4.4

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.225 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Elms Nursing Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.6 = 0.625

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
