There is one thing that I am not happy about. When my husband was at Northbrooke, he was going through an aggressive phase, Northbrooke called me to say that they were going to put him on a 1 on 1 from 2 PM to 9 PM. I listened but did not agree to anything. They then said that a form would be sent to
me to sign which I never received. I didn't hear anything about it. Then all of a sudden I get a monthly bill of £3000 plus beginning in February-March.
In May and June, I visited my husband and asked to meet the 1 on 1 person, I was told that she was not in that day. Another time I was with a friend and he was sitting alone with all the other residents and not one person was around him or near him. This happened a few more times and I was wondering what I was paying for? Especially when the 1 on 1 was not in the day when I asked to meet the person. How many days did this happen? My husband has been self-funding for almost 3 years and now he is on Social Funding and I am paying half the fee.

Reply from Ian Bennett, Managing Director at Northbrooke House

Thank you for your feedback. We discussed the need for one-to-one support for your husband to ensure his and other residents' safety. We regret that the form was not received and acknowledge the concerns about billing. When we were informed a one-to-one might not have been present, an investigation was initiated, but the manager's departure meant it was unfortunately not concluded. It's possible that the staff member stepped away during your visit to allow privacy, which is standard practice when the family is present, however, I cannot confirm whether this was the case in this instance and apologise. When made aware, we provided a refund for the time noted without one-to-one care, and once safe, we replaced the one-to-one with an extra staff member at no extra cost. We are committed to ensuring quality care and appreciate your understanding. Please reach out if you have further concerns. Ian Bennett | Managing Director

My mother moved into Northbrooke House at the beginning of June. All the staff have been wonderful in welcoming her and helping her to settle. Her room is lovely and she is cared for 24/7 by kind, courteous and caring staff. Thank you for giving my mum and our family reassurance that she is safe and
happy.

My friend has been a resident for about 18 months and in that time he has been cared for very well. Although he is unwell he has improved from his time at Northbrooke House. The biggest challenge is to improve his physical abilities but he still seems reluctant to participate.

On arrival, the manager was immediately very welcoming. She understood how we felt and reassured us. This new path the whole family had to take was good for everyone. The staff are friendly and caring. They give 1-1 time with the residents and incorporate family members into conversations. Nothing is
too much trouble and assist straight away. Mostly with thanks to the manager, we no longer feel guilty or a failure.

Dad has moved in today and what a wonderful welcome was received from the manager, deputy, receptionist, activities leader and all carers. This really is a beautiful, friendly, bright & airy residential home. His transfer from another home that could not offer the quality of care he deserves has been
made seamless with excellent leadership here at Northbrooke. On arrival, residents were enjoying a choir singing wartime songs and Dad was encouraged and enjoyed joining in. He is looking forward to lots of activities in and out of the home and is so proud to be asked to help water the plants. He has a beautiful, modern, bright and airy bedroom. We know as a family he will enjoy the rest of his time here. Thank you everybody.

Very positive over the past 2 years. My wife is a resident and the changes that have occurred over the past few months are welcome and refreshing. The standards are clearly higher in all areas. My wife is safe and well cared for.

I have been invited to to this care home to provide Dog therapy, this is something vital to those living in a dementia care setting as it not only stimulates those living with dementia.
I was so impressed with the care staff who welcomed me with open arms and the residents absolutely loved my little
dog who was able to make the residents in the lounges smile and reminisce about dogs they have cared for in their lives, but also those being cared for in bed. My little dog was so welcomed by those being cared for in their rooms and it made them smile and seemed to help them remember memories about younger days. The smiles I saw were so heartwarming.
What really was welcoming was the manager, she was so kind to us and so forward-thinking with a view for us to return and become part of a care home family.
This care home has great rooms, great care staff and a great leader who obviously seems focused on providing the highest level of care.
We can not wait to return.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.217)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.217) out of 10 for Northbrooke House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.547 for Northbrooke House is calculated as follows: ( (58 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 95 Ratings = 4.547

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.67 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Northbrooke House is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 46 registered maximum number of service users is 9.2. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.2 = 0.87

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Manager

I started my career in health and social care in 1979 when I left my childhood home in Swansea and made my way to Plymouth to become a student nurse. I later transferred my skills to residential and nursing home care working my way up to my first home manager role in 1998.

I have worked in both nursing and residential care homes specialising in dementia care and turn-around management. Before coming to the island last September, I had been working for a local authority as a senior contract monitoring officer.

On a personal level, I have 5 grown-up children and 7 grandchildren who all live on the mainland. I was introduced to the island by friends who came here to open a B&B 8 years ago and so have been a frequent visitor, even in the winter months!

I have made my home in West Wight and I am very proud to call this beautiful Island my home. I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know you.
