Barchester Orchard House Care Home makes the most of pleasant grounds and a versatile interior to provide top quality nursing and residential care, with professionals available round-the-clock and also skilled in care and support for physical disabilities and dementia.

A committed team works hard to ensure that all provision is tailored to the individual, while allowing them to make the most of a relaxed and homely atmosphere. The ground floor of the home has five separate communal areas for residents to enjoy at their leisure and choice. There are 3 gardens also, the sensory beach garden, the courtyard garden and the wildlife garden with accessible enclosed decking area where residents can sit and hopefully catch a glimpse of the local red squirrel family. In 2107 the home won the 'Wight in Bloom' for the sensory beach garden.

The home was awarded 'Good' in all five domains by CQC in January 2017 and the team is working extremely hard towards an 'OUTSTANDING' at the next inspection.

All staff are carefully chosen and well-qualified to achieve the best standards, with the company philosophy focusing on an attentive service that also supports an active lifestyle. Personal interests are encouraged and there is much to enjoy within the life of the home.

The communications between staff need improving. During this past week, members of our family have been given contradictory information and instructions on the visiting times permitted and where to remove and deposit our protective face masks, gloves and apron.
On Tuesday on arrival, these items were
issued plus a temperature taken, on Wednesday no temperature was taken?
On leaving my brother-in-law was instructed to wash his hands. I was not?

All the staff attending to me were excellent. Their thoughtfulness and cheerfulness were marvelous, which shows good training. Obviously the coronavirus affected some of the usual facilities offered, but light relief was given when safe, including gin! The management office has been extremely helpful
with the use of phones and my many inquiries and those of close family. This is about my returning to my own home. I would highly recommend the Orchard, provided it can be afforded!

My Mum went into the Orchard at the start of lockdown for some respite as she was struggling at home. Obviously, the period was fully within Covid lockdown, so the home was running differently than it would normally be as they were taking extra care to protect the residents. Notwithstanding the restrictions
Mum's health improved markedly with the excellent care she was given enabling her to return back home in a much better state of repair. As restrictions ease, I have no doubt she would enjoy the full facilities provided.

We were made to feel welcome from the moment we first got in touch with Orchard. A team member who would actually care for our Mum showed us around and answered any questions. We were able to select a room which would suit her needs and move familiar things in from home. Even when there were issues
with her discharge from hospital, the team from Orchard went out of their way to help and settle her in.
Since then we have had no cause for complaint. Our Mum seems to be happy, loves the food and cakes and is cared for as an individual, taking her personality into account. There is a huge range of activities available in normal times, if she wishes to join in.
Orchard has used their imagination to provide stimulating activities during lockdown. Their daily communication has been fantastic. We know that we can contact them at any time with our concerns.

At 80 I wasn't expecting to go into a care home/centre and I have had to change my mind, but I am now feeling guilty as I am enjoying being here. I can't find fault with any of the staff, they are all caring and loving. I came into the care centre in March and the virus started soon after. Several things
had been arranged by activities that had to be put on hold, but I'm sure they will soon continue again. Thanks to all the staff.

Really friendly and considerate care staff. The ladies on reception are great. The food is good and they are always ready to supply extras - cakes, teas etc. Lovely lounge, dining room and kitchen and all really clean and well maintained.

When my mother's dementia suddenly worsened, we had to make the hard decision to send her into residential care. Orchard House have been absolutely amazing. My mother has settled in really quickly and is very well looked after in memory lane. The staff are all very professional, they take very good
care of mum and treat her as an individual as they do the other residents. She has only been there three and a half weeks but she has already called Orchard House her home. We, as relatives, have been given a tremendous amount of support and cups of tea. We would like to thank management, admin, reception, nurses and carers for everything you have done for all of us.

My mother has just passed away after four years, seven months at Orchard House. Generally, she was looked after very well, had a very comfortable room and was settled and content. There were a few occasions over the last few years where I have had to say something to the nurses/manager, as I have been
unhappy. My overall view is that the unit Mum was on needed an extra carer all the time, so the carers were not rushed off their feet. They were undervalued and should be paid more, instead of spending the money on unnecessary refurbishment.

My father was a resident for 7 months. A difficult individual dealt with extremely well by the staff. Occasional issues always addressed well by staff. Very complex medical issues were always recognised and staff always looked for new solutions. My father was very withdrawn when he entered the home
but the activities team never gave up on him and succeeded in getting him involved in activities. Management is always happy to address any queries and demonstrated a clear commitment to moving from a 'care home' culture to a 'hotel' feeling.

Each time we visit there is a warm and homely welcome from the staff. The facilities are good, refreshments available and there is a lovely lounge for us to use. My brother in law is very happy with the care he receives, as are the whole family. Despite his health issues, he is encouraged whenever possible

Mum passed away last December 2018. She was at Orchard House for 5+ years. Mum was always treated with kindness, dignity and respect. Towards the end of Mum's life, the carers and nurses were exceptionally sensitive and very supportive to me.


Changes in the home are often frequent and the management

take care to ensure residents are not disrupted - with such a large establishment the personal touch and 'knowing' your residents' needs is very important.

I found moving my mother from the hospital to The Orchards upsetting as I had no idea what to expect what a surprise. The management and staff are amazing her room was clean and beautifully furnished. I honestly could not ask for anything better if I have a problem the management are there to help and

Kim

Kim Fleming

Job Title: General Manager

Joined: 2018

I grew up in Scotland and tried many university courses and careers before I settled into nursing at a later stage in life. I worked in hospitality, managed pubs, tried primary teaching and studied English and politics at university. I’ve travelled the world, but eventually decided I needed a career that I could give something back with.


I trained to be a mental health nurse and graduated in 2008, along with two children in tow. My career in Scotland involved working with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, and I worked my way up the ladder quickly to management. I specialised in positive behaviour support, and loved making a difference to people’s lives.


My family and I made the decision to move to the Isle of Wight in 2017, and that is when I joined Barchester as a peripatetic nurse initially, before being offered the position of deputy manager in 2018 at The Orchards. I love my work here, we have an amazing team and residents, and there are so many opportunities to really care and look after people who deserve that in their later years.

I am an experienced Deputy Manager/Clinical Lead who has worked as part of the Barchester family for many years. I have worked as a Deputy Manager in a fellow Barchester home, a Registered Nurse and prior to undertaking my nursing degree, I enjoyed working as a Healthcare assistant here at Orchard House. I have recently obtained my Associate Fellowship in Higher Education due to my work in teaching leadership and management skills in nurse education. This has been a new venture for me having spent most of my career within childcare and education settings.
I work on reception and support the administrative processes within the home.

Hi, My name is Becky, I am the Head of the Unit for Valentine. I have worked at Orchard House for nearly 10 years. I’ve been a nurse for 29 years and previously worked in the hospital. I saw an advert on the fencing of Orchard House stating they were recruiting nurses and thought I needed a change so I will pop in and look around. Next thing I know I am working here at Orchard House and never looked back. Having never worked in a Nursing Home before I wasn’t sure how I was going to get on, but I must be doing ok as I’m still here and still love it.

I’m Lauren Round, and I’m proud to be the Head Chef here at Orchard House.
My journey with Orchard House started back in 2018 when I joined as a General Assistant. Over time, my passion for cooking grew stronger.
I completed the Envy Q3 Chef Training Programme at Barchester.
Not long after, I stepped up as Second Chef, which gave me the chance to really develop my skills in the kitchen.
In 2024, I was honoured to take on the role of Head Chef, and I’m excited to lead our fantastic kitchen team.
Cooking has always been a passion of mine, and I love creating meals that bring people together.
Originally, I’m from Shropshire. I moved over from the mainland about ten years ago, and Orchard House has felt like home ever since.
