Barchester Orchard House Care Home makes the most of pleasant grounds and a versatile interior to provide top quality nursing and residential care, with professionals available round-the-clock and also skilled in care and support for physical disabilities and dementia.

A committed team works hard to ensure that all provision is tailored to the individual, while allowing them to make the most of a relaxed and homely atmosphere. The ground floor of the home has five separate communal areas for residents to enjoy at their leisure and choice. There are 3 gardens also, the sensory beach garden, the courtyard garden and the wildlife garden with accessible enclosed decking area where residents can sit and hopefully catch a glimpse of the local red squirrel family. In 2107 the home won the 'Wight in Bloom' for the sensory beach garden.

The home was awarded 'Good' in all five domains by CQC in January 2017 and the team is working extremely hard towards an 'OUTSTANDING' at the next inspection.

All staff are carefully chosen and well-qualified to achieve the best standards, with the company philosophy focusing on an attentive service that also supports an active lifestyle. Personal interests are encouraged and there is much to enjoy within the life of the home.

Mum was a resident in Orchard House for approximately 1.5 years. During this time overall Mum's care was unsatisfactory.


There were never enough staff on - although the staff there were very dedicated - but rushed off of their feet.


We had to see the Manager several times regarding Mum's care

- to which several points were never resolved.


Our main concern was the lack of staff on each ward - If it takes two carers to help a resident to the bathroom that leaves one member of staff to care for over twelve other residents! The duty of care failed my Mother.


The home spent lots of money to decorate and make an outside garden - which can't be used for wheelchair residents - unless assisted by a member of staff - this money could of been saved to employ more staff.


Overall very disappointed.

My team work extremely hard to deliver not just good care, but to deliver exceptional person-centred care and this makes us all very busy dedicating our working hours to our residents. As you mentioned, there were many meetings between us to address the issues and I feel sorry that you felt these issues were never resolved in spite of the meetings held.

The palliative care has been amazing not only for the resident but the family as well.
The staff are attentive and go the extra mile to make a dreadful situation better and more tolerable for everyone. I can't thank them enough.

I have been very impressed by the service provided by Barchester Orchard House care centre. The management and administration department were extremely helpful and dealt with all matters promptly and efficiently.
The nursing care staff were extremely dedicated and hardworking and showed great compassion

Overall Orchard House Care Centre cares for my godfather well. However, when the manager is away on holiday etc. There should be a visible deputy in place. Also, I have noticed that not all visitors sign the visitor's book. At weekends I think there should be a manager on duty.

Thank you for taking the time to review our lovely home. As General Manager, if I am not in the home, I am always contactable should any issues/concerns arise. I am often in at evenings and weekends and am happy to meet with you at a specific time and date to suit you to discuss issues relevant to your relative. There is always a senior nurse in charge of each of our 3 units for you to liaise with regarding your concerns. My nurses are very experienced and will be capable of dealing with concerns raised and will contact me if the need arises.

Overall facilities adequate but feel the staffing levels are not sufficient. Many residents need to feel someone is always quickly at hand and this is not always the way, due to low staffing.
I have been told this is because many residents need 2 carers to move them. If this is the case, I feel these
needs should be considered by management when dealing with staffing issues.

As part of the ongoing regulation provided by CQC, staffing levels are reviewed and our current inspection with CQC raised no issues in relation to staffing levels. Last minute sickness by staff can cause issues and I am working closely with my staff so they understand the importance of alerting the management at the earliest opportunity if they are unable to attend for their rostered shifts so that cover can be organised in a timely manner.

Mum's improvement in 3/4 weeks whilst at The Orchards has been amazing. She has more confidence, received physio care and is being well looked after. The staff are so friendly and caring to the residents and welcoming to the family. Being invited on the Quarr Abbey outing was fantastic and the sing-a-long
was great!!!

All the staff were so helpful, cheerful and kind. We looked at other nursing homes on the mainland and Orchard House was by far the nicest. Aren't we lucky to have it on the Isle of Wight.

My godmother's clothes keep going missing including new bras. I would expect the home to help mark up her jumpers and underwear etc seeing as this is an issue and it is. I have raised this three times with the staff and nothing has happened. A carer was also rude to my godmother. Your mobile phone system
is also not very effective or properly manned.

Mum was transferred to the Orchards from St Mary's hospital. She had terminal cancer. She was cared for and looked after very well. At first she was reluctant to stay but with the help and support of the dedicated staff of Memory Lane she was very happy and settled in the last few months of her life.

Orchard House as a home, in my opinion, is every bit as good as a hotel. Clean, welcoming and smart. The staff are very competent, caring and professional - both to the residents and to visitors. The food and choices are tempting and served with interest and care. I am to have an operation followed
by a few weeks convalescence and will, if possible, go to Orchard House and have stayed in very good hotels.

As a result of vascular dementia, my mother was often very confused and tearful. The team at Orchard House worked to reassure her and to ensure that appropriate care was in place. As her condition began to deteriorate, nursing and care staff were quick to adapt to her changing needs. I was kept well
informed but also given the opportunity to discuss her condition and care with professionals. My mother was looked after with understanding during her final days. I felt well supported throughout and that the best had been done for her.

I live on the mainland so it is not easy to visit as frequently as I would like. However, I am totally confident that mum is being well looked after and it was a joy today to visit her and see the care and professionalism of the staff. Mum, who is 99 looking so much better than we feared after a spell
in hospital. Orchard Care home is untruly a caring care home, both physically and emotionally.

From the outset, all staff have shown a genuine interest in Mum's welfare, care and personal likes and dislikes. Mum settled in very quickly and was soon very happy and particularly enjoys the food provided. Orchard House is a lovely environment for residents and families and is maintained to an excellent
standard.


Whilst charges are perhaps quite high, there is no doubt Orchard House offers real value for money. I visited many different homes before making a final decision and certainly made the right choice. Highly recommended.

My mother has been well look after at The Orchards since she was transferred from another care home, via the hospital, due to a fall.
Whilst immobile, she was cared for in her own room. She has been encouraged to get up, improve her mobility and join in with activities. She has some dementia and
the staff are very understanding and patient with her. The home is well maintained and the food is good. Residents are encouraged to eat and drink but their feelings are also respected. The residents always look clean, tidy and happy.

I found the staff, nurses and carers all work so hard always managing to smile and provide such loving devotion but so overworked by the shortage of carers struggling to get essential care to all the residents and leaving no quality time as they did with my husband. Sadly some long term residents have
said to me in my two-week convalescence that the standard has gone down. There is so much good here I hate to hear that and so happy the shortage of help is only temporary.

Kim

Kim Fleming

Job Title: General Manager

Joined: 2018

I grew up in Scotland and tried many university courses and careers before I settled into nursing at a later stage in life. I worked in hospitality, managed pubs, tried primary teaching and studied English and politics at university. I’ve travelled the world, but eventually decided I needed a career that I could give something back with.


I trained to be a mental health nurse and graduated in 2008, along with two children in tow. My career in Scotland involved working with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, and I worked my way up the ladder quickly to management. I specialised in positive behaviour support, and loved making a difference to people’s lives.


My family and I made the decision to move to the Isle of Wight in 2017, and that is when I joined Barchester as a peripatetic nurse initially, before being offered the position of deputy manager in 2018 at The Orchards. I love my work here, we have an amazing team and residents, and there are so many opportunities to really care and look after people who deserve that in their later years.

I am an experienced Deputy Manager/Clinical Lead who has worked as part of the Barchester family for many years. I have worked as a Deputy Manager in a fellow Barchester home, a Registered Nurse and prior to undertaking my nursing degree, I enjoyed working as a Healthcare assistant here at Orchard House. I have recently obtained my Associate Fellowship in Higher Education due to my work in teaching leadership and management skills in nurse education. This has been a new venture for me having spent most of my career within childcare and education settings.
I work on reception and support the administrative processes within the home.

Hi, My name is Becky, I am the Head of the Unit for Valentine. I have worked at Orchard House for nearly 10 years. I’ve been a nurse for 29 years and previously worked in the hospital. I saw an advert on the fencing of Orchard House stating they were recruiting nurses and thought I needed a change so I will pop in and look around. Next thing I know I am working here at Orchard House and never looked back. Having never worked in a Nursing Home before I wasn’t sure how I was going to get on, but I must be doing ok as I’m still here and still love it.

I’m Lauren Round, and I’m proud to be the Head Chef here at Orchard House.
My journey with Orchard House started back in 2018 when I joined as a General Assistant. Over time, my passion for cooking grew stronger.
I completed the Envy Q3 Chef Training Programme at Barchester.
Not long after, I stepped up as Second Chef, which gave me the chance to really develop my skills in the kitchen.
In 2024, I was honoured to take on the role of Head Chef, and I’m excited to lead our fantastic kitchen team.
Cooking has always been a passion of mine, and I love creating meals that bring people together.
Originally, I’m from Shropshire. I moved over from the mainland about ten years ago, and Orchard House has felt like home ever since.
