My husband went into the care home last March, which was very hard for me but has been made easier as I’ve seen the care and dignity towards him as well as the support I receive from the caring staff. His room is small, but he has what he needs and is regularly taken to the community lounge where the
activities team work hard to keep the residents happy.

Our relative was admitted for short care, initially good, but lost mobility due to no physio and staff not allowed to do. One carer failed to have absolutely any understanding of our relative's health needs when calling an ambulance and could not relay any vital information to them calling for help
from other workers. Care initially was good, but deteriorated where staff left her in chair, not attending to her needs. Manager approachable, food good, activities good, clean. If you have needs and need care, they will move your relative out if the carers cannot cope.

Reply from Luke Kenny, Home Manager at St Margaret's Nursing Home

The comments made are entirely unfounded, vexatious and without merit, as exemplified by the fact that the commenter, asked if we could re-admit her relative, just months after being given notice to vacate. We pride ourselves on ensuring that we, as a service, are continually assessing the changing needs of our service users. Sadly, on occasion, placements may no longer be suitable for individuals with increased needs and therefore alternative placements will need to be sourced. We work closely with our service users, their loved ones and other professionals to ensure we provide positive outcomes for those that use our services.

My Aunt moved into St Margaret’s a month ago. The staff have made her so welcome. Her room is beautifully decorated and clean and we’ve been able to personalise it with photos and ornaments. It overlooks the garden which is lovely. The food is amazing. Nothing is too much trouble. Activities are fantastic,
she enjoys arts and crafts and loves the singing.
All the staff are very approachable and friendly.
A wonderful home.

As far as I can see, my husband is getting the care he needs and nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff, in what is a very demanding and challenging job!

It was a very hard decision to put my dad into a care home as he was only 73, but suffering from severe Parkinson's. Mum and I went to look at a few homes, but Mum came to look at this one on her own and immediately felt friendliness. Dad settled within a few weeks and soon called the place home. He
was only there for 6 months, but the staff became our extended family. They always did little extra things for Dad to make him happy. It was a relief knowing he was safe and cared for. The staff are so full of kindness and love and genuinely care about my dad. They also treated my mum so kindly too, who spent a lot of time there. They are very special people who made the last months of my dad's life something positive to remember.

Lack of communication. Do not feel listened to about the care needs of residents. Resident has become more isolated since being here. We feel she is not integrated enough. They gave notice on Mum and then retracted.

Reply from Luke Kenny, Home Manager at St Margaret's Nursing Home

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. We are sorry to hear that there have been aspects of the service that you feel need improving. I hope our conversation on the phone provided reassurance and clarification on the new systems we have implemented. We take all feedback seriously and review our procedures regularly to ensure we are being responsive to our resident's needs. I will be treating this review as part of our "lessons learnt" protocol.

After visiting four care homes in the locality, the moment I walked into St Margaret's, I was immediately struck by the friendliness of the care staff and knew this was the home for my husband and haven't been disappointed. The manager is very approachable and hands-on, and the nursing staff are excellent.
Since being there, my husband has put on weight which is wonderful and says a lot about the food. Another bonus is the locality - so nice to be able to take my husband out in his wheelchair for a coffee in town and browse around the shops.

My aunt is recovering after an illness and has been staying at St Margaret’s. The management and staff have been giving her excellent care and the attention she needs in her recovery. They are regularly in touch with me with updates and any essential information I may need.
I feel that St Margaret’s
is an excellent care home, and relatives can feel assured their loved ones are being cared for with respect and dignity.

Dad is at St Margaret's. The staff are caring, and the food is excellent. His health and wellbeing are well taken care of, and we are informed straightaway if he has any issues, such as a recent ministroke when he had to go to the hospital for a few days.
The location is also wonderful as we can easily
take Dad out in his wheelchair either along the canal, to the seafront or along the high street for a coffee.

During a recent spell of poor health, we were able to visit Mum at any time on any day without feeling in the way. Care is always good, but during this time, all the staff went the extra mile, showing compassion and understanding and keeping us up to date with any concerns and calling on the most appropriate
agencies to keep her safe and comfortable.

Mum was at St Margaret's for about 8-months and was looked after so well. I couldn't have been happier. The staff always found time to talk, and nothing was too much trouble. St Margarets is like a family and celebrated Mum's birthday with a beautiful care and ballons, and they all sang to her and made
her 96th birthday very special. I would recommend St Margarets to anyone.

My husband came to St Margaret's Nursing Home for respite care as I was unwell. He arrived in May while covid restrictions were in place. The care and kindness shown to both my husband and our family was exceptional. They went out of their way to ensure all his needs were met and treated him like a
member of their own family. We will always be grateful to all the team at St Margaret's.

My Sister has been in St. Margaret’s for four years this month. We firmly believe that my Sister is in the best possible place to receive the best medical attention for her deteriorating condition (MS) and also she gets the best possible care and love from the staff. With the advent of the current Management
Team, my Sister’s condition and especially her comfort has improved noticeably. The Manager has handled the current situation with the pandemic exceptionally well. He has made every effort to ensure the residents are not in danger from the COVID virus and the staff too. I cannot praise the staff enough for their dedicated work.

My brother has been a resident of the home since September 2016. He has many health and mobility problems which the home manages extremely well. His temperament can be extremely trying at times but the staff at all levels continue to be patient and caring with him. They do their very best to try to
lift his spirits and to encourage him to join in with their activities. Throughout this pandemic, the home has been vigilant and taken great care of their residents which is a big relief to me knowing my brother is being kept safe and well. I am very happy with the care my brother receives and am extremely grateful to all the staff at all levels for all their hard work.

My father-in-law came to St Margaret’s nursing home when he was very poorly and nearing the end of his life. For a loving family, the least we wanted for him was a caring and warm environment, but we found he received far more than this. During the weeks he was at St Margaret’s, we felt my father-in-law’s
health and comfort was a priority to all staff members and nothing was too much to to ask of them. Our distress and concerns that, inevitably, come with losing a loved one were addressed and handled with professionalism, duty and compassion and for this, we can never thank them enough. I was particularly impressed with the involvement of the management who did not hide within the office, but made themselves available for any questions and were a strong presence throughout the home.
Thank you again to the manager and all the team at St Margaret’s.

Current Review Score: 8.8 (8.825)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.8 (8.825) out of 10 for St Margaret's Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.650 for St Margaret's Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (43 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 60 Ratings = 4.65

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.175 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Margaret's Nursing Home is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 25 registered maximum number of service users is 5. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 5 = 0.8

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
