The dedicated team at Wantage provide residential, nursing, dementia, palliative and respite care, which can be booked in advance.

Staff share Sanctuary Care’s vision of Enriching Lives, based on the six senses people need to feel truly happy and fulfilled – a sense of achievement, belonging, continuity, significance, security and purpose.

The home’s resident ambassadors are enormously proud of their roles, which include everything from helping to nurture the gardens, to welcoming new residents to Wantage.

The team takes time to get to know their residents as individuals and their fascinating life histories. One resident was a professional football referee, while another was involved in immunisation!

Mealtimes are a special part of the day, with the home’s chef a proud winner in Sanctuary Care’s annual Masterchef Competition in 2022! With a passion for baking, residents enjoy mouth-watering cakes and puddings every day – and stunning personalised birthday cakes. And fish and chip Fridays are without doubt the most popular day of the week!

There are so many activities to get involved in, from regular visits with school children and gentle exercise sessions, to animal visits – especially from therapy dog Dug.

Wantage has its own minibus for trips out into the community, and residents also enjoy regular live, personalised radio broadcasts direct to the home with Radio Cherwell.

There are some lovely spaces to relax in with family and friends, from the conservatory overlooking to beautiful, enclosed gardens, to the lounges and quiet rooms. And the home has a hairdressing salon, with a mobile hairdresser regularly visiting.

The bedrooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, with walk-in, ensuite wet rooms. Many of the bedrooms have patio doors leading to the gardens.

Wantage also has its own private Facebook page, where loved ones can see what the residents have been getting up to.

Care is always excellent with a good range of activities suited to dementia patients. Food always looks appetising and my Aunt enjoys mealtimes. Rooms are clean and tidy and are a generous size with en suite facilities.

I find Wantage Nursing Home a friendly, well-supported home.
The majority of staff go above what is required of them and will assist residents and family with any request asked of them.
The food is as good as any local restaurant and with various choices at breakfast, lunch and supper.
Nursing staff
and management will listen to all enquiries and help whenever possible.
They all deserve praise for a hard professional job.

Mum's first visit for respite care and initially we were all a little nervous.
However, the team have been fantastic and the environment very comforting.
Mum has thoroughly enjoyed her stay and is more than happy to come back.

My husband has dementia and was admitted to the from hospital 6 months ago. The care he has received has been exemplary. The staff are patient, professional and always appear to respect residents dignity. The atmosphere in the home is welcoming and the environment is pleasant and well maintained while
management takes the trouble to communicate with and consult relatives. I am very happy to recommend the home whenever the opportunity arises.

The overall appearance of a care home is clean, tidy, the general appearance is very good. The staff always greeted us and always offered us tea/coffee when being served to residents.
My only issue is with the menu too many options, get rid of the chilli con carne options. It would be easy to tailor
meals to residents likes v's dislikes mum very hard she does not like eggs/cheese foods. I think this would reduce waste and I saw lots of waste which is disappointing. I am sure mum is not eating well. Podiatry needs to be followed up!!

My wife is treated with kindness, dignity and care and support is always on hand. The food is always of a high standard with good choices. Food and drink are always available throughout the day should the residents need any. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff who are always on hand to

After becoming very ill our father urgently needed full-time end of life care. Wantage Nursing Home provided an excellent service from the initial contact and admission through to the final clearing of this room. All members of staff provided excellent care, day and night, not only to our father but
also to family members and many visitors. Words are insufficient to express how good the home has been at a most difficult time. Wantage Nursing Home will always have our highest recommendation. Thank you very much.

My husband moved into this nursing home in September 2017. He has now settled in and with the help of the staff, he is slowly adjusting. Whenever he has a problem they are always there to assist him. It is a wonderful nursing home, well-run and has excellent, who not only support my husband but myself

Generally, I have been impressed by the dedication of the staff and they seem to genuinely care. This makes a big difference to my father and he seems relatively happy as can be. Sometimes it is difficult to get through to the home, so if I return a call to the home, it can be difficult to understand
what message was being communicated. However, in general, my father seems happy.

We just wanted to say thank you for the professionalism, compassion and total dedication of each and every member of the hard-working team at Wantage Nursing Home. Our beloved dad was looked after with such kindness, patience and empathy and was treated with the utmost respect and dignity. He enjoyed
the ready smiles of his carers and their light-hearted humour. His room was bright and we were encouraged to personalise it with pictures and photos. Classic FM was turned on for him every day which he loved. The food was exceptional! We are also very grateful for the thoughtful consideration of us as a family. We were always warmly welcomed and listened to.

Lauren welcomed the very first resident to Wantage when it opened its doors in 2008 and is the home's longest-serving member of staff.


"It’s more than a job, I feel like this home is my baby and I love being here,” she says. “I love looking after the residents and making a difference in their lives.


You see the residents every day and they become like a second family to you – you worry about them if they aren’t well, you care for them and you enjoy listening to their stories.


It feels so special to have been here from the beginning, I love being here and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!”

Our award-winning head chef Monica came third place in Sanctuary Care's annual MasterChef competition in 2022. Monica loves baking and makes delicious cakes and biscuits for afternoon tea. She also prides herself on creating stunning bespoke birthday cakes for our residents.


"I always ask them what cake they would like, and when I see their happy faces, it means I can go to sleep feeling happy!


Food is very important to our residents - if I enter the dining room and see the residents smiling, then I am happy.


I love working here – most of my family are in Romania so the people here at Wantage are like my family – they have a place in my heart.”
