The dedicated team at Wantage provide residential, nursing, dementia, palliative and respite care, which can be booked in advance.

Staff share Sanctuary Care’s vision of Enriching Lives, based on the six senses people need to feel truly happy and fulfilled – a sense of achievement, belonging, continuity, significance, security and purpose.

The home’s resident ambassadors are enormously proud of their roles, which include everything from helping to nurture the gardens, to welcoming new residents to Wantage.

The team takes time to get to know their residents as individuals and their fascinating life histories. One resident was a professional football referee, while another was involved in immunisation!

Mealtimes are a special part of the day, with the home’s chef a proud winner in Sanctuary Care’s annual Masterchef Competition in 2022! With a passion for baking, residents enjoy mouth-watering cakes and puddings every day – and stunning personalised birthday cakes. And fish and chip Fridays are without doubt the most popular day of the week!

There are so many activities to get involved in, from regular visits with school children and gentle exercise sessions, to animal visits – especially from therapy dog Dug.

Wantage has its own minibus for trips out into the community, and residents also enjoy regular live, personalised radio broadcasts direct to the home with Radio Cherwell.

There are some lovely spaces to relax in with family and friends, from the conservatory overlooking to beautiful, enclosed gardens, to the lounges and quiet rooms. And the home has a hairdressing salon, with a mobile hairdresser regularly visiting.

The bedrooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, with walk-in, ensuite wet rooms. Many of the bedrooms have patio doors leading to the gardens.

Wantage also has its own private Facebook page, where loved ones can see what the residents have been getting up to.

My mother was a resident from May 2015 to February 2017. She was treated with dignity at all times and was well cared for. It was clear that her carers knew her well and were able to meet all her needs.
The family were always made to feel welcome in the home.
She died in the home after a short illness.
The kindness and compassion showed to her and the family at that time was exemplary.
We cannot thank the home enough fo all they did for her.

My nan was a resident in Charlton suite and had dementia. The compassion and care given by all staff during her short stay until her death was exemplary. I cannot praise them enough. They were kind and attentive to her every need. She was always kept clean and comfortable and they always welcomed us,
her family, with support and kindness over a very difficult emotional time.

I have previously submitted a review about the excellent staff at Sanctuary Wantage. I would also like to give a review of the latest manager. She is the third manager since my husband became a resident and in my view, so far, seems to be the most approachable and caring. She has good rapport with staff,
residents and relatives alike. I visit daily and look forward to her coming into the dining room at lunchtime.

Lauren welcomed the very first resident to Wantage when it opened its doors in 2008 and is the home's longest-serving member of staff.


"It’s more than a job, I feel like this home is my baby and I love being here,” she says. “I love looking after the residents and making a difference in their lives.


You see the residents every day and they become like a second family to you – you worry about them if they aren’t well, you care for them and you enjoy listening to their stories.


It feels so special to have been here from the beginning, I love being here and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!”

Our award-winning head chef Monica came third place in Sanctuary Care's annual MasterChef competition in 2022. Monica loves baking and makes delicious cakes and biscuits for afternoon tea. She also prides herself on creating stunning bespoke birthday cakes for our residents.


"I always ask them what cake they would like, and when I see their happy faces, it means I can go to sleep feeling happy!


Food is very important to our residents - if I enter the dining room and see the residents smiling, then I am happy.


I love working here – most of my family are in Romania so the people here at Wantage are like my family – they have a place in my heart.”
