Bernard Sunley care home specialises in residential and nursing care, as well as care for people with dementia in modern, purpose-built facilities. All of the rooms are spacious, light and airy and have en suite facilities.

Bernard Sunley features a cosy lounge and dining room, as well as a fully equipped hairdressing salon and the much-loved Smiles Café – a warm and welcoming café where residents can meet with other residents or visiting family and friends for a refreshing tea or coffee, or perhaps a tempting treat.

My mother-in-law arrived for a week's respite following surgery. It is clear that The Bernard Sunley is very well-led. During her time there, her care was exemplary; it truly is a home-from-home. All the staff were wonderful, and myself and the family couldn't speak highly enough of them. The food was
amazing and the care was even better. The team showed great compassion and were caring and respectful. We would thoroughly recommend The Bernard Sunley wholeheartedly.

Dad was admitted to Bernard Sunley during the Covid lockdown. We couldn't view and had to go on word of mouth and our gut feelings talking to the manager on the phone. Visiting was restricted to behind-glass visits. Dad appeared to be cared for and the staff gave us updates. Now we can visit freely,
we can see the wonderful care Dad has received. The staff are so friendly, caring and making us so welcome. But above all, it is their devotion and positive attitudes that make The Bernard Sunley Dad's home. A home amongst friends, with a family feel.

The Bernard Sunley has the most unique, friendly atmosphere, and you feel it as soon as you enter reception. Management and staff are always willing to sort out any problems you may have and do so promptly. I am very happy with the care my husband receives, and feel assured he is in safe hands.

Appropriate care was provided for my Mother throughout her four and a half years at the home, through a period of progressive Dementia and declining physical health. There were always good proactive discussions when the level/nature of care needed to be adjusted. I had an excellent relationship communicating
with all staff at the home.

My mother was admitted into the home directly from hospital. From day 1, it was clear that she would be well looked after. Staff are very pleasant, helpful, caring and understanding, taking time to talk to her and understand her. All staff on her floor knew her and were knowledgeable about her circumstances.
The manager and reception were fully up to date with my mother and very quickly got to know relatives and visitors. Very well done and thank you for what you have done.

Nursing homes are all about the staff - their attitude, commitment and love. Whilst there are always going to be the occasional wobbles, particularly during covid-19 outbreaks nationally and the necessary guidelines, the focus of the staff and the wellbeing, care and happiness of the residents is amazing.

Our lovely grandma passed whilst staying in Bernard Sunley. She was treated with dignity until the very end. We couldn’t have wished for her to be surrounded by kinder or more caring people - the residents there are very lucky to have the fabulous staff they have. The nurses were so sweet to our Grandy.
They did everything they could and more to make sure she was comfortable and calm. She left this earth surrounded by love and that’s all you can ask for really.

I was impressed from my first encounter with the staff at Bernard Sunley. My father was discharged there straight from hospital and it was a very worrying time. Everyone, from the manager, the deputy manager and each and every member of the nursing and the full range of care staff did all that was possible
to make his stay there comfortable. Visiting was made as easy as it could be by the staff on reception. Everyone was thoughtful, caring and professional. My family and I cannot thank them enough.

Bernard Sunley cared for my Grandmother for 8 years. Not once did we ever have cause for any concern. Everyone was fantastic and very caring, right up to the very end of her life in 2013. My mother always said that the Bernard Sunley would be the only home she would want to go to. Following a fall at
the beginning of November and Alzheimer's, Mum ended up in the local hospital for 24 hours. We received a call from them, saying they did not have the staffing to look after Mum as she has a broken shoulder and with Alzheimer's, they were discharging her back to her home, requiring 24 hr care. 'Panic stations'! The only thing I could think of was Bernard Sunley! One call was all it took for the panic and heartache to disappear! The staff were brilliant and took complete control, dealing with the hospital. Within a few hours, Mum was in her own room surrounded by her own belongings, home from home. We can't thank them enough! The care since, has been exemplary.

Mum lived at Bernard Sunley for 4-years. She had previously been there for respite. She was severely disabled with arthritis and had suffered multiple strokes, so she needed, and received high-level nursing care. The staff were caring, cheerful and accommodating of family visits, Covid permitting. She
often told us she was well cared for. Her end of life care was particularly good, and she died peacefully after the family had said their goodbyes.

My father moved to your home in Haslemere and as his health declined over two years, moved to The Bernard Sunley Nursing Home - first downstairs, then upstairs. During this period, I have nothing to complain about. Good care, staff, dignity. With covid, very hard for the carers and those being cared

My sister was well cared for. She enjoyed the food and regained the weight that she had recently lost, so came home after three weeks of respite care, much more her old self, chatty and positive, particularly about the staff.

When initially visiting Bernard Sunley as a prospective care home, we were both welcomed and reassured. We were able to personalise our father's room with all his favourite furniture and belongings and put his pictures on the walls. Although our Dad was only in the care home for a short period of time,
it was evident that the staff got to know him and his needs really quickly and well. Communications between staff and family were always very good. Dad was always treated with the greatest respect, kindness and gentleness by all the staff, as were the family.

Our uncle was at Bernard Sunley for about four years until his death earlier this month. We live in the US and were only able to see him once or twice a year. He was quite elderly and had no family or friends left in the UK. The staff at Bernard Sunley Nursing Home were great. They worked hard to keep
us updated on Uncle's condition via email or phone. Uncle was well taken care of by people, who literally became like family to him. The staff at Bernard Sunley Nursing Home were exceptional. They seem to genuinely care about each resident and to try to individually address their needs whether by offering a favorite sweet, taking the time to sit down and listen to a story, or even to shop for new trousers, jumpers, pajamas, etc. as Uncle's size changed and we were too distant to shop for him. We believe Uncle felt secure and happy at Bernard Sunley Nursing Home. He embraced the activities offered and would tell us about the various entertainments or crafts available. We believe his last years were enhanced by the care and attention he received.

Our mum went into this home in October 2019 until April 2020. From the first day to the last day of her life, Mum was cared for and well looked after by everyone. Which was a relief to us all, we could call up any time of the day or night. Thank you, everyone.

My mother has lived here for the last 20 months, and I would like to give my and my whole family’s thanks to ALL the staff and management for the wonderful care they give our mother, especially in these appalling times. I have total trust in the staff regarding the care of our mother, who suffers from
dementia (and who can be stubborn and difficult on occasions but hopefully also a pleasure to be with!) and who is also very mobile.
The home is always clean and smells fresh when I visit and the communal social and eating area has been redecorated recently.
Residents are well cared for and are treated and spoken to with respect and love.
All the staff is smiley and friendly, they also give time (if not too busy) to give feedback about our mother.
Obviously it has been a really stressful time for everyone since March, regarding the care of loved ones in care homes, but the way the manager and all the staff have looked after our mother has been amazing.
We would like to give a huge thank you!

Andy Cumper

Job Title: Care Home Manager

Joined: 2014

I first started with Bernard Sunley in 2014 as an Administrator and soon progressed to Office Manager – these roles allowed me to build trust and relationships with staff, residents and their families. In early 2018 I was promoted to Home Manager and it is my vision to build a home that is fully integrated in its community and to expand on relationships with local services, groups and organisations to enhance the welfare and opportunities for our residents.


Bernard Sunley a welcoming, friendly home where residents and families are encouraged to engage in all aspects of the home from activities to discussions on what they would like to see happening at the home. The atmosphere is relaxed and staff and residents form great relationships built on trust and care.


Quite simply the best thing about my job is the people. We take the time to get to know each resident who lives with us – their likes, dislikes, the lives they have lived and the sort of life they would like to continue to live in our home. To see a family happy and at ease knowing their relative is well looked after and happy is a great reward. But perhaps the biggest reward is being allowed to share a smile, a story, a memory, with some of our residents and knowing that they are happy to give that time to me.
