Bernard Sunley care home specialises in residential and nursing care, as well as care for people with dementia in modern, purpose-built facilities. All of the rooms are spacious, light and airy and have en suite facilities.

Bernard Sunley features a cosy lounge and dining room, as well as a fully equipped hairdressing salon and the much-loved Smiles Café – a warm and welcoming café where residents can meet with other residents or visiting family and friends for a refreshing tea or coffee, or perhaps a tempting treat.

My mother lived at Bernard Sunley Nursing Home for 2 1/2 years. She was not an easy person to look after but she was always treated with kindness and consideration, warmth and good humour. We are extremely grateful to all members of staff including nursing, care, cleaning, catering and support staff.
We
feel that the professional, purposeful but happy atmosphere reflects the high quality of the management. An excellent home.

Due to frailty and gently increasing dementia, our Mum/mum in law has been living in Bernard Sunley for just under a year. The staff in the dementia wing where she lived have been wonderful, so patient and kind. They understand how dementia affects people and how this makes people behave totally out
of character. Sadly Mum died in January. The staff are trained to give palliative care. Our Mum passed away in a warm comforting and supportive environment. We are so grateful to the team at Bernard Sunley. Brilliant professionals who genuinely care about their residence. Thank you so much. So proud of you all.

My mother was in Bernard Sunley for just over 2 years, in that time, although my mother was misbehaving they were wonderful, reassuring me all the time.
Mum became ill at the end of September, I cannot fault the staff at all. We visited mum night and day and there was always someone with her.
I
judge by how people behave, when mum died, the staff cried. Please don't change the way they behave.

I cannot speak highly enough of the staff at Bernard Sunley Nursing Home. All the staff, from cleaners to the head nurses were extremely kind, caring, thoughtful and I would even say loving towards my mother. She was shown kindness and respect at a very difficult time during her last few weeks of life.
All the staff treated her with understanding and patience, taking the time to chat and be sure that all Mum’s needs were met, trying to see things through her eyes and therefore anticipating her needs before it became an issue.
I know Mum became very fond of the staff, with good reason, and I believe they were also fond of her, they certainly showed great fondness. All in all, their exceptional kindness and professionalism made Mum’s last weeks as good as it could have been. Thank you to all the staff.

My mother was a resident at Bernard Sunley Nursing, Residential and Dementia Care Home for over five years. Throughout she was treated with care and respect. Sadly, she recently died and the end of life care was exemplary. My sister and I were encouraged to stay and we received wonderful support. Our
mother was never alone and was kept comfortable, relaxed and pain-free. The year before we received the same level of professional care when my father died there.

My mother was admitted to the care home in late March following an awful car accident which left her almost bed bound and extremely confused.
Prior to her admission she endured several hospital moves and was operated on following several injuries to include a broken pelvis, collarbone, ankle etc.
The
prognosis was that she'd never walk again and she was initially hoisted to sue the toilet and shower.
My mother is now walking, chatting and presenting as generally happy, valued and stimulated. I have a lot of time and confidence for the care and compassion the home gives.

My mother spent the last four years of her life living at the Bernard Sunley Care Home.
All of the staff, management, carers, nurses and maintenance staff always treated her with kindness and respect.
I was kept informed of any problems and was always able to discuss her health and other needs with
the staff, who are unfailingly good-humoured and helpful.
Her room was kept clean, and the programme of entertainments was excellent, with varied activities morning and afternoon so that there was always something to look forward to.
She enjoyed the meals, which were varied and nutritious.
The nursing care was second to none, and she was treated with a gentleness which allowed her to keep her dignity, even at the most difficult of times.

The staff always treat me with kindness and a smile, even though I am not a frequent visitor. Concerns about my Mum on this visit were treated sensitively as changes I had noticed are part of the progression of dementia. This was explained to me sensitively, but the nurse also made her own observations
and health checks in my presence to confirm. A heartfelt thanks!

For the last 10 years, I have been involved with the Bernard Sunley Nursing, Residential and Dementia Care Home as they cared for both my Mum and Aunt. I have nothing but praise for the care and kindness shown to both my relatives and to myself over the years.

My father was discharged from hospital 10 weeks after a serious fall, which fractured 2 vertebrae in his neck. He was 95 years, frail and in a dangerous and delicate state as the neck was unstable, supported by collars. My father only spent 4 weeks at the home but was given such good care, friendship
and support in a happy environment. He was bedbound but all his needs were attended to with respect. He was kept comfortable and he enjoyed the food and was eating well. Staff supported him and our family to the end.

My mother was diagnosed 25/07/2016 with cancer of an unknown primary, she was given less than a year to live and at that point had cancer in her lungs, liver, lymph nodes, adrenal glands, bones. She lived with myself and my family until the end of Septemeber when she began to have care needs which we
could not provide, after a short stay in aWoking Hospice she was granted a place at Bernard Sunley. From the very beginning myself and my siblings felt a warmth from the staff at the home. My mum was a difficult patient to take on as although ill she didnt want to be in a home as she was only 63, the care staff and the nurses did their upmost to make her at ease and took all the nonsense she tried to give them. When it came to her end of life care they ensured she was treated with dignity and helped her pain releif as best they could even though they had little support from the pallative care team. They faced all this and still made mums death peaceful and helped us through the process too.

The entire staff at Bernard Sunley - nurses, administrators, helpers, cleaners - were most kind and considerate during the six months my mother was there. I was out of the country and telephoned regularly and the nurses gave me detailed current information about my mother and went out of their way
to give her the phone to speak with me if she could. During my mother's last days the nurses were so sensitive, respectful, careful, and kind to my mother and to me. They completely understand what relatives are going through when their parent is facing her last days. Without fail, they were totally responsive, always asking me if I needed anything, they were very quick to address any question I had about my mother and always demonstrated complete respect for her care. Their primary goal was to make her comfortable and make sure she was pain-free. As a result of their attention to her needs, and respect for her wishes, she was able to die in peace.

I visited eight different homes in the Woking area before deciding on Bernard Sunley.
My mother spent the last six months of her life at this care home. Even as a 98-year-old with a level of dementia she was extremely reluctant to consider this an option. However, from the outset, she enjoyed being
in a nursing environment realising how much of a relief it was to be properly cared for in a nice room with a view.


From my perspective, I found everyone in the home was genuinely caring and wanted to do everything to make Mum comfortable. She was encouraged to take part in many of the activities which she clearly enjoyed. Towards the end of her life, the level of palliative care was both sensitive and appropriate. The level of support both she and ourselves (family) was outstanding. As a result, she passed away peacefully with her family around her and with full support of the nursing staff.


The Home has a great welcoming atmosphere with excellent communication from the whole team.

In a time turmoil, my mum being suddenly discharged from hospital with palliative care. The staff were reassuring and offered positive advice and support. The whole team at Bernard Sunley were compassionate, friendly, supportive and reassuring. My mum was cared for with the utmost dignity and professionalism.
Although only there for a few days I am sure that she felt at home in the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere with us by her side in her final days. My brother, husband a I were also given support and care by the whole team in mums final days. A huge Thank you.

Job Title: Care Home Manager

I first started with Bernard Sunley in 2014 as an Administrator and soon progressed to Office Manager – these roles allowed me to build trust and relationships with staff, residents and their families. In early 2018 I was promoted to Home Manager and it is my vision to build a home that is fully integrated in its community and to expand on relationships with local services, groups and organisations to enhance the welfare and opportunities for our residents.


Bernard Sunley a welcoming, friendly home where residents and families are encouraged to engage in all aspects of the home from activities to discussions on what they would like to see happening at the home. The atmosphere is relaxed and staff and residents form great relationships built on trust and care.


Quite simply the best thing about my job is the people. We take the time to get to know each resident who lives with us – their likes, dislikes, the lives they have lived and the sort of life they would like to continue to live in our home. To see a family happy and at ease knowing their relative is well looked after and happy is a great reward. But perhaps the biggest reward is being allowed to share a smile, a story, a memory, with some of our residents and knowing that they are happy to give that time to me.
