Excellent 10 days of respite care following surgery. All staff very friendly, caring and capable and nursing staff very good indeed and reassuring. Food very good and generally a lovely experience and a good rest.
Surroundings lovely, gardens beautiful. I have known Birtley for many years and standards
as high as ever.

My mother-in-law died in September, aged nearly 90, after spending the last nine months of her life at Birtley. She arrived there after an extremely difficult time in hospital when she nearly died, and she was left distressed and distrustful as a result both of her illness and the poor treatment she
received. The staff at Birtley were wonderful and worked patiently and skilfully to restore her in body and mind so that after two months she was able to join in activities and enjoy life again despite her physical limitation. The staff treated her with respect and as an individual at all times and were unfailingly courteous and helpful to me and my husband on our many visits. They kept us informed and included in decisions about her care. At the end, they managed her decline sensitively so that she was able to pass away peacefully, with dignity and without pain. There is a real feeling of community at Birtley and all members of staff, including receptionists, cleaners and gardeners, as well as the nursing and care staff and the excellent physios and activity team, work together and were always pleasant and welcoming to us as visitors.

My parents moved to Birtley when mum was 86 and dad was 95. Following a stroke, she was no longer able to be his carer.
From the day they each arrived (separately) I knew that we were in the safest of hands.
Obviously, the magnificent house and grounds compensated somewhat for the loss of their beloved
home. But it was the warmth, dedication and utter professionalism demonstrated at all times by each of the Walley family (who run the home) and every one of their wonderful staff which convinced me that all would be well.
Both my parents quite genuinely thought of Birtley as "home". They felt loved, cared for, listened to - as did we.
It is never an easy decision to move a frail person (let alone two) into a nursing home, but never once did we question the rightness of our decision.
Birtley is truly a family run home. The ethos there is one which I only wish could be replicated in other nursing homes across the country.

The care given to my aunt was so good from the day she moved to Birtley House until her departure. The staff are professional, well managed and very kind and sensitive. The services on offer are broad - good activities, excellent choice in food and the setting is very beautiful and peaceful. The
relationship between the care and management team with friends and family was exemplary and efficient.

My care at Birtley House Nursing Home has been consistent of a high quality. The staff are caring, friendly and treat me with dignity which helps me to be confident and safe. My illness is managed by visiting doctor and matron to the best of their ability and pain control as much as possible.

I first came to Birtley House Nursing Home 23 years ago after a major operation and subsequently in October/November 2016 after another operation to convalesce. This time I have been on a weeks holiday!
Each time I have been wonderfully cared for especially as regards to meals as all my food has to
be pureed. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for the staff.

My step-mother arrived at Birtley House just before Christmas 2016, having fallen and broken a hip alone at home. She died 4 days after her 100th Birthday in April. She would never have reached this milestone without the highly professional, kind and above all caring staff at this wonderful, exceptional,
family owned and run nursing home. The surroundings are beautiful and the home itself is lovely, but it is the ethos and the excellent staff that make it. They see the person, not the problem and ensure they are treated with great dignity and respect. I was kept informed of even the slightest change in my stepmother's condition. Staff make a great effort to get to know the immediate family, who are always made to feel welcome. Thank you.

My father has Parkinson's and my mother has bouts of depression. The care home has attended admirably and in a timely fashion to their very different requirements. Support during difficult times has been excellent. Problems have been resolved sensibly. My parents love the grounds and are looking forward

My aunt has been in the nursing home area of Birtley House for two years now. The standard of care is excellent and staff are lovely. Not the cheapest but a top class facility within attractive surroundings. The residents are treated as family members by the owners.

I have had excellent and very kind care here at Birtley House, this is a happy and well-run establishment. Well appointed rooms, very empathetic nursing and caring staff. The meals have been very good and I must mention that every single member of staff that I have met has been pleasant and courteous.

My 97-year-old mother visits Birtley house weekly to attend the activity day, has her hair down and lunch. She enjoys the day, the staff are extremely kind and welcoming. She feels safe and secure and as a family, we feel it is important she gets out and had interaction with people other than the family.
It is also a comfort to know if and when living at home becomes too difficult we have a first rate care home nearby.

My aunt was at Birtley House for palliative and end of life care. She was treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion from the moment she first made contact with the manager and her wonderful staff.


With the help of the counsellor, she was able to better come to terms with the sudden and shocking

terminal diagnosis she had been given by doctors only a few months earlier. Her fears were understood and she was supported in trying to deal with them.


I wish I had been able to write this sooner but the feelings were too raw. I want people to know that Birtley House and the team are quite outstanding. I wish others would learn from the manager who has carefully chosen staff who really do CARE about their residents as indeed does she. The manager and her team supported us as a family through a very difficult time and even after my aunt had died, offered us support to come to terms with our loss.
We are eternally grateful to all who cared for my aunt for making her last weeks as comfortable as they possibly could be, in spotless surroundings, with kind people around her and that when the time came, it was peaceful, pain-free and with those she loved beside her.

My father-in-law has now been in Birtley House for six months since a severe stroke. I can honestly say this has been the best place for him. He has been so happy and has slowly improved due to the quality of care and services from all the team at Birtley House. We are so happy for him. He too is very

This was my first experience of finding a nursing home for my dad who needed respite care after an emergency hip replacement. We were looking for a home that could help Dad get back on his feet and get him ready to go back home again.
Birtley House is fantastic - a beautiful setting, lovely rooms,
amazing staff who are really kind and patient and good food. Dad spent three weeks there and it was such a relief to know that he was getting all the help and care he needed. Thank you!

The staff and owners of Birtley House helped settle my Mother-in-law into Birtley House with great care and tact and respect after the sudden death of her husband. She was already suffering from advanced stage dementia. They showed enormous sensitivity, patience and love, throughout her 10 month stay.
During her last days they could not have been more attentive, as well as supporting my wife and I. My wife wanted to be with her mother until the end and this was facilitated with ease. Staff instinctively know how to balance care and privacy at a very difficult time. When the end came, the Matron was with us. No praise high enough for her and her staff.

Sylwia Indycka has a full Nursing background as well as previous care home management experience. A proud member of the Birtley team since July 2018, she joined us during a period of business innovation and change and has inspired and led her team to success in various ways.


Sylwia is a positive character with various dimensions to her leadership, she goes the extra mile to always make sure our Residents are getting the most out of life and experiencing new things, whilst teaching her team to do the same. She has also written a book on end-of-life care following her own personal experience of caring for a close family member.


Viorica

Viorica Darie

Job Title: Clinical Lead Nurse

Joined: 2016

Qualifications: University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania, General Nurse qualifications in 2014, maximum degree.


Written by our Registered Manager, Vio was a finalist for the 'Frontline Leader of the Year' award at the Surrey Care Awards in 2019.


I met Viorica when I joined Birtley House in July 2018, it didn’t take me long to recognise her skills and abilities. In this short time, she proved to me her dedication, commitment, organisational and strong leadership skills.


After witnessing Vio’s work ethic, and the influence she has on others in the nursing team, general hard work, commitment and positive attitude to change, I chose to promote Vio to Clinical Lead in the Spring of 2019. Vio’s attitude is always positive and she is strategic in her approach to completing tasks. I have seen days where she might be facing a deadline, but she will continue to motivate others, find the paths of least resistance, and prioritise accordingly. Great skills to have in a reactive role such as nursing.

Vio has raised the visibility of a smile around the home and she faces her duties with a focus on compassion and an open mind and she treats everybody fairly. Her passion and consistency support our home all the time.


Our latest CQC inspection on 7th June this year was of course unannounced and a first for Vio. She was a great support to me during this time, as I knew I could trust that she would be calm and professional. She was, and she reassured the three inspectors with her skills and knowledge. She was able to navigate them through the day with a great attitude, and she showed pride in her work as she found them the evidence of things that they requested.


Vio’s caring personality allows her to graciously and naturally respect resident’s values and respond actively to other people’s needs. Vio always wants the best possible outcomes for residents and staff. She genuinely, really cares and wants to make a difference.


As a qualified nurse myself and now an experienced Care Home Manager, I have learnt that to deliver good, quality, person-centred care and effective compassion, the nurse in question is required to use their head and heart. I have witnessed this quality in Viorica on numerous occasions, and she sets great examples for the team around her.


Every time I implement new innovations or a change Vio adopts a positive approach towards learning and embraces the challenge, because she wants to grow in her skills and knowledge, and she wants to be the best version of herself for the home.


I think that nothing can reward nursing practice as much as the feeling you get when you know that you are being the nurse, and the person, that you want to be – I strongly believe that Vio actively practices being this person. It takes courage and self-management to respond to people who are distressed and vulnerable, to advocate patient care or to challenge and change practice and Vio each time can deliver all.


I am very pleased to have Vio in my nursing team- she is truly a rising star in the nursing industry because of her dedication, kindness, attention to detail and empathetic compassion.

Hello, I'm Rudo and l have been a nurse for 14 years.


I started at Birtley House as a healthcare assistant and it really motivated me to pursue my nursing career. Having grown up living with my Grandmother, my passion is taking care of older people. Just after qualifying as a nurse, I went on to study a module at Brighton University which explored perceptions of ageing and why we should care for our elders in certain ways. Being able to apply this to my Nursing qualifications was perfect for the career that I have chosen, and which I love. I have been at Birtley House for around 18 years and only stepped away once for a short stint in a hospital environment to wider develop my knowledge and experience.
