I regularly visit Hatch Mill to visit my aunt. I always find the home in a calm state with contented residents and staff who are competent and attentive to residents. I have full confidence in the staff who are well managed and can be relied on to do the right thing in all cases.

We cannot praise the staff of Hatch Mill highly enough for the extraordinary care and consideration with which they looked after my mother-in-law over the last nine years, and particularly in her final few weeks. Our family was enormously comforted by the fact that she was treated so well during her
long residency by largely the same group of staff from beginning to end, each of them caring and compassionate. During her early years at Hatch Mill, we were impressed by the number of outings she was taken on and the activities organised in the home, and the sense that Hatch Mill is a family in itself for those that live there. We will miss the staff and would not hesitate to recommend Hatch Mill to anyone considering care options for loved ones.

There is a lovely homely atmosphere at Hatch Mill the moment you arrive. The lounges have plenty of light and are spacious - well laid out with comfortable chairs. The en-suite bedroom accommodation is also good.
Management and staff address all their patients by their first names in a caring way
and there is a social programme with a monthly schedule of activities. Minibus outings are arranged to places of interest, plus local shopping centres. The hair salon is popular too.
Special occasions like Valentines Day are celebrated providing interest and conversation that also involves visitors.
Last summer the BBQ in the Japanese garden was excellent. Family and visiting carers were also invited, making it a very special day.
The dining room is both practical and very bright and the food is good. I normally stay for lunch so I overhear patients' comments like 'they do their best to please us'.
Each time I depart with peace of mind that Mum is really well cared for and comfortable.

The staff and management have been amazing helping the family feel welcome at Hatch Mill and giving mum the best care possible in a home where she is safe, respected and cared for by staff who are kind, patient and thoughtful, as well as being enthusiastic about the work they do and the residents they
care for. The home is well supported by volunteers which assist the team to offer the residents outings throughout the year at no additional cost - unlike most care homes. The management team are outstanding and the staff reflect their high standards. Hatch Mill has a warm and friendly environment where I would be happy to reside should I need care in the future.

I would NOT recommend this home. My grandfather was not well cared for. Although the facilities are nice, the staff are defensive and unsupportive and the food is not nutritious.
We decided to move my grandfather to a different home.

Reply from Sally Tidy, CEO at Hatch Mill

“We are saddened by your review – It is difficult when residents who have capacity decline to let us share information as this makes it difficult for staff. We are surprised at your comments on food when your grandfather gained weight with us.”

We visited 24 care homes within a 15-mile radius of mum's home, which varied in terms of accommodation, size and cost. We found at Hatch Mill exactly what we were looking for. The staff worked well as a team and offered longevity of service with Abbeyfield/Hatch Mill (something found lacking in most
of the other homes visited), excellent on-hand managers and a warm, homely environment. We were immediately impressed with the feel of Hatch Mill as a place to live. We thought to ourselves, "If I needed residential care, this would be a fine place to be", which made it just right for mum. The staff and management show kindness and consideration, are always available for a chat and are good listeners.

My mother has been cared for at Hatch Mill for 11 years. She is now 103.
The staff are kind, patient and thoughtful.
Always available to talk through any issues that arise, which they follow through and deal with.
Everyday life follows a routine which is so important for the elderly.
My sister
and I are very grateful to know that our mother is safe and well looked after.

Very caring establishment. Does not smell of cabbage or wee. The carers are a remarkable team and always go the extra mile to help. It is people that make a place and notably the carers but the management are excellent too. Welcoming entrance foyer which I think is one of the hallmarks of the establishment.
My relative is well looked after and afforded more dignity than I would have thought possible given the challenges of cognitive decline.

My wife has been at Hatch Mill for just over two years. She is very well looked after by all concerned. Everyone is human and mistakes happen, but these are all quickly resolved to everyone's satisfaction. I must also mention that there are very regular staff and residents meetings (separately) Management
are always present at both types of meetings and any problems are very quickly resolved. I must also mention the activities during the summer there are weekly trips to places of interest and every day there is also something going on. There is also a stylist who comes in once a week and attends to everyone's hair. Overall I couldn't cope at home and I am extremely pleased that I chose Hatch Mill

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.682)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.682) out of 10 for Hatch Mill is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.0 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.661 for Hatch Mill is calculated as follows: ( (39 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 56 Ratings = 4.661

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.021 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hatch Mill is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.6 = 0.521

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
