The Wykeham House care team are passionate about the quality of care they provide for their residents, providing first-class 24-hour nursing and residential care, including expert care for residents living with dementia in the Wykeham House Memory Lane Community.

The residents benefit from a tailored care plan that takes into account their individual personalities, including their favourite activities and food preferences. Wykeham House Care Home is also able to provide Respite care and provide short breaks for residents wishing to stay on a short term basis. All rooms in the Home are en-suite, with spacious lounge and dining areas.

Wykeham House, based in Horley town in the borough of Reigate and Banstead, was built in 1995 and officially opened by Sir Richard Branson in 1998. The home is located less than 5 minutes from Gatwick Airport, near to Horley train station and close to the M23 and M25 motorways. The town of Horley has numerous shops and cafes to visit and is home to several hotels and bed and breakfasts that can be used by visitors who live a bit further away.

Wykeham House encourages their residents to keep in touch with their loved ones, including over email and social media, especially for those residents with family and friends who live further away. The home has free Wi-Fi, allowing residents and their visitors to connect to the internet for free without having to set up a private arrangement with an internet provider.

Wykeham House offers additional services such as the hair salon, a comprehensive activity programme run throughout the week and a family-based day on Sundays, allowing the residents to have a quieter day with their family and friends at the weekend.

My Mum has been a resident at Wykeham House for just over a year. I can honestly say that the staff at Wykeham have made this very difficult time for our family bearable. They are so caring and patient. There has been a change in the management recently which has caused a few ripples with the staff
but all seems to be settling. I hope Barchester appreciates the staff they have at Wykeham.

Staff are excellent and treat mum with respect and look after her very well. Food is very good and the home is kept very clean and tidy.
Mum has settled in very well and loves it.

My wife has been in Wykeham House for nearly 5 years. All of the staff are very friendly and are always ready to help including management. I would and I do recommend this place to anybody who needs to put a loved one in care.

When I viewed Wykeham, I was told that there are a lot of activities for the residents. When my mother started, I discovered there wasn't much daily activity and one of the activity coordinators had one day as a carer which left no one to do activities, or if there were, very little by someone else.
I felt there could have been more time listening to music rather than watching the telly. My mother is used to more interaction with people which I feel she isn't getting at Wykeham.

Thank you for your feedback and critic. There are two staff members that make up the Activity Team in the home, and between them have 70 hours per week. In addition, there is another staff member that supports them two days a week. This means every day for 7 days of the week, there is always someone in the home who can lead and coordinate the activities in the home. We, however, need to address and work a bit more on where and how those activities are provided to ensure all four living areas in the home share, take part and enjoy the program that is in place. I will also be looking specifically at the interaction and engagement with other people that your mother needs, and will give you direct feedback on how we progress in meeting this for her.

I have always found the care my Aunt has received in these last five years as very good. There has been much improvement in the last 2 years since the new manager has taken over such as facilities, training, new staff, decor, activities and a lot of care to all residents to make everyone feel at home.
Residents families are given a lot of respect. My Aunt's younger brother died recently and I was entering hospital that week and too ill to visit. The staff were extremely helpful and caring to my grieving Aunt until I was able to visit a week or so later. This was much appreciated. My Aunt will be 100 soon.

It is now five years since my friend had her stroke and had to make Barchester Wykeham House her home- to begin with, she was quite bright but over the years appeared to have lost her spirit. Recent months have shown massive improvements, this I believe is due to good management, a great occupational
therapist and improved care and observation. I have only marked care as satisfactory because in some cases this still needs improvement- but is improving.

In my mother's last few hours of life the staff were fantastic, so kind, the tea and biscuits really helped. We were really looked after, and mum was made as comfortable as possible, and pain-free. We thank the staff for their kindness and compassion.

Food very good. Bed is a bit hard, position within the home not acceptable for someone who has all their faculties as was told the room would be upstairs and ended up on ground floor with more dementia related residents.
Staff very helpful and friendly and couldn't do enough for me.

On the whole carers work very hard to create a caring environment and genuinely seem to care for the residents. However, they are frequently under time pressure from under staffing and sickness absence. This means they they may not be able to spent sufficient time with individual residents, especially
those who are not mobile, and who therefore can feel isolated.


Individual carers are mostly good, occasionally do not respond to residents who are speaking to them. Training in communication skills has been organised to hopefully this will improve. Some carers go the extra mile, and relate to the residents, others do not really listen and laugh when they are speaking.


Nursing is variable with failure to notice symptoms of infection and lack of knowledge of geriatric immune response (or lack of); one or two very good and sensitive, and listen to residents and family. There seems to be a fear of asking the GP, and are reactive rather than proactive with health issues unfortunately.

First class service, a place I would hope to go to when my time comes. The care they give to my wife is friendly, my wife likes a joke and has fun. Of course she would be happy at home with me, but that's impossible. It would be nice to see her out of bed for the summer.

My cousin has been well cared for generally. Her hearing aids are often problematic - she says that when she is washed in the mornings the aids are frequently not removed, so often have water in the tubes or when they are removed they are done roughly and tubes have fallen out. We have had to take them
to the hospital for repairs.

Over the last 2 months we have noticed a great improvement in my mothers communication skills. Since having daily activities she hardly disturbs her room at all. She seems very content there after 16 months there. The staff are very respectful of their dignity and very kind. All staff are very approachable,

I started working part-time as a carer in a local care home when I was 16 whilst finishing my studies. At 18, I left home to start my nursing career and, after qualifying as a registered nurse, I went on to midwifery. After having 2 children, I found working in the NHS difficult to manage and had an opportunity to go back to working in care homes. I got my first management position in 1998 and have never looked back. It is so rewarding to do a job that I enjoy and that I am passionate about.

Realizing my greater potential, I advanced to nursing roles in haematology oncology and chemotherapy in the NHS. Our housekeeping team are an essential part of maintaining and looking after the home. The housekeeping team run the in-house laundry service for our residents and ensures the facilities around the home are well-kept and clean. Each day the team cleans residents' rooms and communal areas across the home. The housekeeping team are another set of smiling faces our residents see throughout the day and residents are encouraged to maintain activities of daily living by helping the team complete their tasks.

In June 2024, I proudly completed my Care Practitioner course, further enhancing my skills and knowledge. I am dedicated to delivering exceptional care and support to our residents and I am very proud to be part of a team that prioritises the well-being and dignity of those in our care.
