After many months of looking at care homes for my wife, we came across Old Wall Cottage. The home was so happy and the staff were so warm and welcoming to us on our pre-admission visits. The staff team were extremely professional and most had been there many years.
My wife settled in well and was
extremely well cared for and happy. It is with a heavy heart I am now looking at alternative homes for my wife as after a change in home manager, nearly all of the permanent staff have left or are leaving and the home is now predominantly staffed by agency who are unfamiliar with my wife and those who live there.

I live outside of the UK and my father who is 92 recently had a stroke. We have been through 3 different care facilities and Old Wall is by far the best. The other homes were not clean and very regimented. Old Wall is small intimate and feels like home. The staffing ratios are great and the rooms are
nice. The food is good and my father is often wanting seconds.
The staff know my dad personally and with it being a small home, they have a personal relationship with him. I can phone and visit the home any time and the manager has set up the ability for me to be able to Facetime my father when I like from the USA where I live.
I cannot say how much of a relief it has been to have my father moved to a home that is so caring and pleasant. I truly feel very lucky and am eternally grateful to the great staff for caring for my dad.

My friend has been in 2 previous care homes. Since moving here she has been much better cared for, the building is safer and the staff are kind and cheerful.

Although Old Wall Cottage is some 12 miles away it has been worth going the extra mile to get the care and attention I wanted for my wife. I like to visit every other day or so and always find the staff welcoming and friendly.

Staff's attitude to clients and visitors is warm and welcoming. They have patience and understanding of clients' needs and conditions. The home itself is warm and comfortable. The food appears a healthy diet and suitable for individual's needs. Little things such as birthdays appear to be acknowledged
in some way with all the clients eg a birthday cake.

My wife has been here for 16 months and is as happy as anyone could be having to live in a care home. I am happy that she is well looked after as a person.

My husband suffers from advanced Alzheimer’s disease and before coming to Old Wall Cottage was frequently upset, agitated and difficult to care for. The calm, kind and professional approach of the staff quickly allowed him to settle and behavioural issues are no longer a problem. He is now able to enjoy
his meals and the gentle daily routine. I feel confident that he is comfortable and well cared for.

My stepmother in law has lived at Old Wall Cottage since January 2016. She lives with mixed Dementia and is quite strong-willed so can be tricky to manage at times but the staff at Old Wall have always treated her with kindness and compassion. They are patient and very good at gently distracting her
from things that might upset or agitate. I am very grateful to the staff for looking after her so well as we live over an hour away but have confidence and reassurance that they are caring for her well.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.580)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.580) out of 10 for Old Wall Cottage Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.780 for Old Wall Cottage Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (71 Excellents x 5) + (20 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 91 Ratings = 4.78

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Old Wall Cottage Nursing Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
