Following a stroke last autumn I had to make the very difficult decision to put my husband in a care home. How lucky was I to find Mulberry House so close to home?
Sadly he passed away in early January, but in his last three months, he received exceptional care from the staff at Mulberry House. From
the cheerful cleaners to the friendly and efficient maintenance team, nothing was too much trouble, but my special thanks go to the care assistants and the nursing staff whose care and compassion I shall be forever grateful for.

Have always found the carers and administrators at the home to be very helpful and polite. Always attentive to requests or questions. My relative has settled in very well and gets on with most of the carers.

I can't praise the staff enough at Mulberry House. They have helped me get back from a very bad place and because of the people at Mulberry, I am better and will move to a supported living shared home. I would especially praise the activities staff and admin but all the staff are fantastic at what they
do and it's like a family and feels like home.

My mum has been in Mulberry House for the past few months following a stroke in February this year. Out of all the homes I have visited during the past 6 years of caring for my parents, Mulberry House was above and beyond the best that I have experienced. The team/staff at Mulberry are exceptional -
nothing was too much for any of them who carried out their work in a kind, efficient and extremely cheerful manner. They interact with their residents in such a lovely way - it was a joy to watch. Some of the female staff danced and sang, engaging with their clients daily and all the staff entertained them, cared for them, followed them around, cleaned them, fed them, kept them safe and loved - and responded to all the requests quickly (no matter how bizarre they might have been) all with a smile and caring tone. I cannot recommend Mulberry House highly enough - the whole team are absolutely amazing.

Excellent care, especially the staff who are wonderful. My wife is bedbound but receives all the care she needs. The cleanliness of her rooms is exemplary. She suffers from Alziemers but seems happy in the home in her own little way.

My mother has been resident with you for nearly four years. She is confined to bed and cannot walk. During this time we have found the staff and management to be supportive, kind and informative to her and us. We are very happy with all the care provided. She feels safe and secure and very happy, which
brings us much comfort as we are unable to look after her ourselves due to my disability. Thank you for everything.

My old mum, who suffered from Alzheimer's, was moved to Mulberry House in February 2022 and she passed away there in June 2022. I cannot speak highly enough of the wonderful staff who cared for her while she was there as I was unable to as I live in the north east. Nothing was too much trouble and they
made her last few months happy ones. Carers do not get enough credit, especially those who care for people who are at the end of their lives. These people are truly remarkable and what they do is far more than a job to them. They have my admiration and deepest respect. I will be eternally grateful for what they did for Mum. Thank you so much to you all.

Mum has been in Mulberry House for 9 months and she is very happy. The staff are wonderful and are always there to help her. Being almost deaf and with dementia, things can be scary for her but the staff always make her feel comfortable and put her first. I can't thank them enough. Being able to visit
today for the first time in 5 months has been wonderful. She was so happy.

My mother stayed at Mulberry as a respite guest for 2 weeks. Due to COVID, we were unable to visit so a very stressful time for the family. All the staff at Mulberry were fantastic during this time. They answered all our concerns with empathy and kept us updated and supported each day whatever time
we called them.
Mum was very pleased with 'all the lovely staff that have been so kind to me'.
Thank you Mulberry, we couldn't have asked for more even though this must be a very stressful time for you all as well.

Very satisfied with the nursing and care. Sometimes they could do with extra carers at busy times, such as meal times and breaks.

Mum has been at the home now for over 4 years and overall the care has been good with only a few hiccups. Mum is now receiving palliative care and the level of care has been amazing and committed. I am very thankful for this at this very hard time. Thank you to all staff.

Reply from Tara Cross, Registered Care Home Manager at Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care

It is always a deep personal satisfaction for staff to know that they have provided the best possible care to someone, particularly at the end of their life and when they have formed such a close attachment to an individual they have cared for over years. Thank you so much for your lovely feedback, especially during such a difficult time for you and your family.

I am very concerned about my wife's health and safety. The residential home is dirty as are the toilets. My wife's room is also dirty. There aren't any carers in the lounge to assist the residents which puts them in a very dangerous and vulnerable position.
The purified food I give to my wife is a
very small portion. Mealtimes are irregular. Personal care for my wife is very poor. She often smells of body odour and has dirty clothes on.
I have visited lunchtimes and seen her breakfast, untouched, congealing. My wife cannot feed herself and I am so concerned about her health. I take porridge in every day and feed her myself because she has lost so much weight.

Reply from Tara Cross, Registered Care Home Manager at Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care

We are very sorry this relative has made a vexatious complaint despite all our repeated attempts, as well as myriad health and social care professionals involved, to help him understand his Wife's overall health and condition. This client, whom remains within our care, despite her husband's repeated frustrations, has been very recently reviewed by her funding commissioner to their satisfaction.

My mother was placed into Mulberry House from her own home one month ago. My mum, my sister, myself and Mum's visitors cannot fault the homely environment within Mulberry. All the staff are wonderful and every patient is treated as if they were their own parent. Mulberry is like a home from home.

My sister has been in the home for the last few months and the conditions were not ideal then - but my last visit was a disappointment. The lack of enough staff, cleaning and general appearance of the outside and inside of the building has reduced to quite a sad state. My sister needs more one to one
time. She thrives on people talking - in turn, she would make more effort herself.

Reply from Tara Cross, Care Manager at Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care

We are sorry you remain disappointed with the appearance and cleanliness of the Service. Mulberry House is a beautifully extended large Edwardian Mansion House, with extensive gardens and grounds. The Service has recently benefited from large amounts of investment into refurbishment with many new exciting home additions to come. We are committed to continuous improvement for the comfort and well-being of our many clients, their families and of course our staff.

Reception is welcoming. Staff very polite.
All areas kept very clean. Care is quite good. Mum kept quite comfortable, although she has been bedridden for the past eighteen months.
Cannot comment on food as mum eats very little. She is unable to take part in activities but does like music in her room.
The hairdresser visits and mum receives podiatry care on a regular basis.

My brother has a very complex care need and is not an easy person to look after, he arrived at Mulberry House with very inadequate records and no personal effects. The assistance manager has been amazing. She has made sure that my brother has had the support and care he needs - sometimes spending whole
days on the phone to get it. She had made a massive difference to the quality of care - she's a real champion.

I was forced to make the difficult decision to put my auntie into a care home. This is a point I had dreaded but the help received from Queen Mary’s was above and beyond. The care and compassion shown to my aunt was as if she was their own relative and they made the process so much easier for me! Her
care package was tailored to meet her needs and that was shown to help by how quickly my aunt settled in! From the manager to the care staff to the chef they were so friendly and I cannot thank them enough for all they did for me and my family and most importantly my auntie!

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.003)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.003) out of 10 for Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.817 for Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care is calculated as follows: ( (67 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 82 Ratings = 4.817

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.186 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 72 registered maximum number of service users is 14.4. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 14.4 = 0.486

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

Home Manager for Mulberry House and Director for The Mulberry Community.

After finishing university I was unsure what career path I wanted, I had always worked in care homes as a carer since I was 16 yrs old in the holidays and weekends, so caring seemed like a more natural career path.

My whole family were ex-army and I looked into doing my nurse training within the armed forces, what started as an idea from my mum, very quickly progressed into army recruitment and selection processes at Pirbright and Lichfield and joining the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps.

I started my student nurse training with the Army at University of Portsmouth, becoming a registered nurse in adult health.

I had a varied and exciting army career, being deployed on multiple operational tours to Iraq ,Kuwait and Bosnia as well as working in a multitude of ministry of defence hospital units across the UK and carrying out military exercises, I worked predominantly as a high dependency surgical nurse.

As with all good things though, it came to an end after 9 years when I fell pregnant with my first child. Realising that operational commitments to the Army and babies definitely do not mix well, I left the Army and immediately moved back to Hastings and St Leonard’s to be closer to family.

As a stop-gap, I applied for a job as a registered nurse at a nursing home in St Leonard’s called “Queen Mary’s”, imagine my surprise at seeing my QARANC cap badge above the door!! I thought this would just be for a little while until I found what I really wanted to do.

I found however that the environment suited me really well, I loved the ethos and the camaraderie with colleagues you get to know so well and drive to do a good job that was at the heart of everything.

Time progressed and I became a clinical lead, then deputy manager and then was appointed Registered Manager in 2014.

We have built a strong team of dedicated and long serving professionals at Mulberry House and I still love it as much as the first day I walked in. Its an absolute rollercoaster some days, but I always stive for us to do things better.

Mulberry House is home for 68 residents, some of them come to live here permanently, others on a temporary basis, however our aim is to provide outstanding care to all of them, and to treat them with respect and dignity.

It can be a very challenging job some days, but this has always been a motivation in itself to aspire to improve and do things better.
