My mother has been here only 6 days so my experience is limited. However, the staff are all very attentive and helpful.

I find the staff very polite and helpful. The room is clean and always tidy. I find the room very hot as the windows don't open wide but Mum likes it hot so not a problem for her.

The staff are always polite, friendly and helpful.
The quality of care that my brother as is exceptional, always a smiling face on offer.
I can't really comment on the food, although I know my brother enjoys it most of the time and he is never left hungry.
I feel that I have to mention two members
of staff in particular. The compassion of these two goes well beyond the call of duty. A real asset to the care home, as everyone is.

Queen Mary's is a very welcoming nursing home, with lovely friendly staff. From my personal point of view, they have lots going on but my mother chooses to stay in bed all day. Although she could take part in lots of activities, because of this I feel that it is a lot of money to pay out monthly to
lay in bed. Having said that, I do really appreciate the fact that it is not an easy job nursing someone who is not mobile. Thank you.

Dad came to this home as his previous home was closing down. We have always been made welcome as has Dad. There have been issues related to "tea" (drink) but have and are being addressed. Continuing Dad's needs to the catering team has taken a while. Some carers have not been up to acceptable standard
regarding moving and positioning and interpersonal skills but the majority are excellent. Management are attentive and keep us informed when needed. The home is comfortable and encourages Dad to partake in activities.

My father was in the hospital for more than 6 months. He was very poorly and had 'complex needs' but Queen Mary's offered him a place and as a family, we are so grateful. The staff, the room, the care is so lovely and we couldn't have found a better place. We just want to say a massive thank you to
everyone at Queen Mary's.

My mother has been a resident of Queen Mary's Nursing Home for several years. She is looked after by a caring team of staff and has opportunities to be as independent as she can be. Whenever a problem has arisen I have found the home manager to be quickly responsive. The nursing staff have taken
good care of Mum and it is due to the standard of attention that Mum continues to thrive.

My mother has dementia/alzheimer's and has been at Queen Mary's since March 2016. I usually describe her situation as "contented". She can recognise that staff are caring and doesn't flinch or get upset by their presence. She eats all her food and is well looked after. She always has a jug of juice
and gets plenty of fluids. She is warm and comfortable. The carers make regular visits if she is in her room and keep her notes up to date. All in all, very satisfied.

The care seems adequate. My wife is helped to get up and taken to the lounge. She is unable to stand, walk or eat by herself but seems to have adequate care.

During my mother's residence (four and a half years), she has been treated with compassion and respect at all times.
The staff are excellent and whilst they work in challenging conditions they do their utmost to make sure that my mother's needs are catered for.
I cannot praise this home enough - keep
up the good work.

Door pad worked really well. Greeted by staff which was excellent. Collected tall chair from small lounge so I could sit with my mother. She was sleepy but happy. The game of musical bingo in the big lounge was great fun.
Could always do with a drink on my visits.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.003)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.003) out of 10 for Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.817 for Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care is calculated as follows: ( (67 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 82 Ratings = 4.817

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.186 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Mulberry House - Specialist Residential & Nursing Care is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 72 registered maximum number of service users is 14.4. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 14.4 = 0.486

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

Home Manager for Mulberry House and Director for The Mulberry Community.

After finishing university I was unsure what career path I wanted, I had always worked in care homes as a carer since I was 16 yrs old in the holidays and weekends, so caring seemed like a more natural career path.

My whole family were ex-army and I looked into doing my nurse training within the armed forces, what started as an idea from my mum, very quickly progressed into army recruitment and selection processes at Pirbright and Lichfield and joining the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps.

I started my student nurse training with the Army at University of Portsmouth, becoming a registered nurse in adult health.

I had a varied and exciting army career, being deployed on multiple operational tours to Iraq ,Kuwait and Bosnia as well as working in a multitude of ministry of defence hospital units across the UK and carrying out military exercises, I worked predominantly as a high dependency surgical nurse.

As with all good things though, it came to an end after 9 years when I fell pregnant with my first child. Realising that operational commitments to the Army and babies definitely do not mix well, I left the Army and immediately moved back to Hastings and St Leonard’s to be closer to family.

As a stop-gap, I applied for a job as a registered nurse at a nursing home in St Leonard’s called “Queen Mary’s”, imagine my surprise at seeing my QARANC cap badge above the door!! I thought this would just be for a little while until I found what I really wanted to do.

I found however that the environment suited me really well, I loved the ethos and the camaraderie with colleagues you get to know so well and drive to do a good job that was at the heart of everything.

Time progressed and I became a clinical lead, then deputy manager and then was appointed Registered Manager in 2014.

We have built a strong team of dedicated and long serving professionals at Mulberry House and I still love it as much as the first day I walked in. Its an absolute rollercoaster some days, but I always stive for us to do things better.

I have been a Registered Nurse for 15 yrs , first in my country, and then for the last 12 yrs in UK.

I joined Mulberry House Team in July 2021 and since then I have been working alongside my colleagues to make a difference in our residents’ lives.

Mulberry House is home for 68 residents, some of them come to live here permanently, others on a temporary basis, however our aim is to provide outstanding care to all of them, and to treat them with respect and dignity.

It can be a very challenging job some days, but this has always been a motivation in itself to aspire to improve and do things better.
