My husband was admitted in March 2022 on an assessment basis, my family and I were so pleased with the staff and his treatment that I fought hard to keep him here at the end of the assessment period. The same staff are still here and I feel that is a great mark of good management and a happy team. My
husband was quite difficult to begin with, but nothing has fazed the staff and management and he has always been treated kindly and with respect. I am always made welcome, he is settled and safe, and his room is kept clean and tidy. Thank you to all at Maplehurst, you have made a difficult time much easier.

Everyone is lovely at Maplehurst and what is so good is that the staff do not leave - many have been there for years! Mum is so well cared for and she is happy and settled. She loves the food as, in her words, 'it is not mucked about'! Cannot praise Maplehurst strongly enough.

Maplehurst are a truly excellent nursing home. I know my Dad is safe, comfortable and happy. He has settled in very well and I have seen real improvements in his well-being thanks to everyone there.
The managers have shown extreme care, kindness and understanding from day 1. All staff continue to
show this on a daily basis. They know the residents so well, are happy to help with anything and support Dad to feel at home. Everyone is also fantastic at updating me and reassuring me when I need it most.
Dad has a lovely bedroom which is personalised and they have done everything they can to make it homely for him.
Every day Dad is supported to come down into the lounge for various activities and lots of interaction. He always has a smile on his face!
Dad is really enjoying the food at Maplehurst and he gets the support he needs with nutrition.
I am confident Dad is getting outstanding care and I am so pleased he is in a place that really cares about him.

I am so thankful there was a space at Maplehurst when we needed it. All of the staff are kind,
caring, and welcoming, and they support relatives as well as residents. The emphasis is very much on providing a homely environment and nothing is too much trouble. The food is of a high standard, cooked
on the premises, and all tastes are catered for.
The staff work well as a team, and are always good-humoured and patient.
Maplehurst epitomises how all nursing homes should be run.
Thank you for everything you do.

The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and I am greeted by name when visiting. They are attuned to the residents, and the clinical care is excellent. They spotted an infection in my husband by noticing a change in his voice, although he is only able to make noises, not speak. My husband has also
gained weight which is good.

Although the staff were very friendly, we found that my mother was just left sitting in the lounge all day until it was bedtime. They did not help her with exercise for her Parkinson's and she was very unhappy there. We took her out after 1 week (should have been 2) and have been charged for the 2 weeks.
All they did for her was feed and put her to bed and charged a lot of money for it.

Reply from BP Gifford BEM, Director ' Group Operations & Continuous Improvement at Maplehurst Nursing Home

We are very disappointed to receive your review based on a single week’s respite. It is particularly disheartening for the care team who bent over backwards to facilitate this extremely short-term, last-minute emergency placement over the festive season.
We normally have a minimum respite stay of four weeks as moving into residential care can be unsettling for all. As a family you were insistent that you only wanted one week’s respite, and special dispensation was given to provide two weeks’ care.
Our care records do not support your views that your mother was brought to the lounge and left there. In fact, they paint a picture that she was unhappy being in care and was still adjusting, which is completely understandable. It appears that during the seven days she was in our care she preferred the one-on-one activities and interactions but did not want to partake in the group activities, which was her choice and was respected. Likely this was part of the settling-in process. She also missed out on some activities as she was out on day trips with the family. During the pre-admission assessment, you made no mention of any additional Parkinson’s requirements. If you had, we would have requested input from the visiting physiotherapist.
Your mother moved home after a single week and you did not want to honour the payment for two weeks’ respite which had been agreed upon. Having looked at the care notes and the placement in its entirety we do not believe that your views – based on a 7 day stay – are reflective or proportionate.
Sadly, your review reinforces our perception surrounding very short-term respite care. We will be unlikely to make exceptions for other families in future who may desperately need a short break. We wish you and your family the very best for the future.

The staff are all outstanding and care a great deal about the residents. The team is very responsive as was demonstrated with the swift changes they made to accommodate my husband's dramatically increased needs after hospitalisation. Lunch was so beautifully presented the other day that I almost took
a photograph of it to put on social media to show what can be achieved in a nursing home and I'm delighted that the activities programme includes physical therapy and movement. I am very happy with the home.

All your staff are so cheerful, kind and patient not only to the residents but also to the relatives. The care is second to none and the quality of the food has always been outstanding, which is important to us. I would also like to thank all the staff for going out of their way to be so kind to me
and I do appreciate their concern.

The staff and management at Maplehurst always go beyond the call of duty. During covid-19 they have all been simply extraordinary and worked very hard to keep it out of the home. I highly recommend them to anyone needing nursing care.

My husband has been a resident here since February and I am very happy with the care he is receiving. The carers are all friendly and supportive and he enjoys their company. The food is good and they take time to make sure he eats as he needs help with this. The home itself is very clean and doesn't
smell. It doesn't have ensuite rooms but the rooms are light and comfortable and can be individualised. They have coped very well during the Covid crisis.

The care of the staff is exceptional. Everyone is kind, thoughtful, and attentive. They know the residents well. I am a qualified social worker and visit many care homes; none come close to Maplehurst in their commitment to the residents and the care provided. The staff constantly surprise me with
how they interact with the residents. They have managed the Covid-19 crisis with their usual thoroughness, and strong focus on the needs of the residents.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.141)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.141) out of 10 for Maplehurst Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.983 for Maplehurst Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (59 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 60 Ratings = 4.983

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.158 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Maplehurst Nursing Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 38 registered maximum number of service users is 7.6. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 7.6 = 0.658

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
