Abbots Lawn is a family owned 35 bedded nursing home situated in the West of Bognor Regis, a stone's throw from the seafront, local shops, hairdressers, gardens and Bognor Regis town. The team have a passion for supporting individuals with dementia and who present with what is sometimes referred to as "challenging" behaviour. At Abbots Lawn this behaviour is seen as a communication tool and the ethos of this home is simple, understand the individual and their communication techniques to support them to live their life to the fullest.

A gradual process is ongoing for designing and changing bedroom décor to align with the latest standards and research around dementia bedrooms. As further research informs better design, the home will adapt and change their designs.

Corridors have already undergone this process and are named and colour themed with doors painted in their own individual colours. This colour scheme, along with signage, supports cognitive awareness and orientation for those with dementia.

The home has 2 large lounges (one quiet lounge and a busier main lounge), 2 small sitting areas (activities and visiting corner and a period feature reminiscence lounge) and a dining area that all service users can use. Homes are comfortably heated in winter and air conditioned in summer to provide the comfiest of climates.

Externally the home boasts a large naturally turfed garden, complete with a summer house and the "Lawn Stores" and to the rear of the property you can find the small sensory garden where service users are able to grow their own vegetables.

There is a strong activities programme in place which includes twice weekly minibus outings to destinations chosen by the service users, access to the community and leisurely walks into the local town for shopping. In-house activities include things like Bingo, quizzes, festive celebratory parties, arts and crafts and baking.

On our regular visits, we are always greeted by smiley staff and told the whereabouts of the resident we visit. I know staff are quick to facilitate any needs called for and I have noticed that some residents even have a member of staff dedicated to them. Residents are offered many snacks throughout
the day including tea and biscuits and sometimes mince pies! The staff are organised and make sure numerous events can take place to please residents.

My husband has settled really well and seems very happy and content. He has been through a lot of confusion but now he seems very happy and never mentions coming home. Having his own room makes a lot of difference as usually, he is a very private man. The staff are really caring.

My father was transferred to Abbots Lawn after a very unsuccessful failed placement. He has been shown nothing but kindness, care and respect since being at Abbots Lawn and has now been signed off from the crisis team. He is now almost nonverbal but the staff seem to understand what he needs and they
are all extremely patient.

My husband was lovingly cared for at Abbots Lawn. He settled in very well. The staff are extremely friendly and very caring. He was cared for and treated as if he was their own. Having needed to relocate Mum from another home we are extremely pleased with her experience at this home. She had far more trips out with this home than in six years at the previous home. Unfortunately, her deadline has meant she is no longer able to join in. The home has been very very proactive in
getting her help and funding and ensuring her care is appropriate. Liaising with general practitioners has been good and quick action. Staff show genuine care and respect.

Susan

Susan Newman

Job Title: Owner and Nominated Individual (RMN)

Joined: 1987

Sue is the owner of Abbots Lawn and has overall responsibility for driving compassionate person-centred care.


She qualified as a Mental Health Nurse shortly after the Nursing and Midwifery Council introduced the qualification. Since then Sue has worked hard to share her passion for and awareness of mental health conditions and good and poor well-being practices.


Since her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Sue has also invested significant resources in understanding how to provide the best care for those who have a dementia diagnosis. Sue has subsequently gone on to host guest lecturers at local universities on the topics of dementia and assisted research in this area of specialism as well as others.


Emma

Emma Donovan

Job Title: Registered Manager and RMN

Emma started her career with Ashton Care at the age of 16 as a tea-time assistant. She has dedicated her working life to providing exemplary person-centred care to Ashton Care service users and in doing so has shown the compassion, empathy and professionalism needed to gain not just Registered Manager status but also to qualify as a Register Mental Health Nurse (RMN).


Emma has gained management experience in the varying residential settings at Ashton Care which has allowed her the opportunity to develop her awareness of a wider range of specialist care needs.

Natalie is an empathetic leader who strives for continuous improvement in the person-centred care offered at Abbots Lawn.
