I feel very fortunate that we found Sussexdown for my mother, where she has now been for two years. She is very happy there, and is treated as an individual with dignity and respect. Both the nursing staff and administrative staff are excellent; they are patient, caring and take time to get to know
my mother and her foibles! It is a comfort to know that she is safe and well cared for.

I have been very impressed with the high standard of care throughout my mother's time there as a resident. Sadly she has now passed away, but with the best of care to the end.
The staff formed a genuine bond with my mum, and she felt safe and well looked after. The staff have been wonderful supporters
of me as a relative, and I felt that they understood and dealt with any worries or concerns, especially as her health deteriorated.
My mum's room at Sussexdown was lovely, with a great view of the wonderful gardens, spacious accommodation and en-suite facilities. She was very settled there. The staff managed the onerous Covid regulations efficiently, and I was able to continue to visit my mum throughout her time there.

I contacted Sussexdown in May with a view to discussing the admission of my mother for nursing care. When I visited, I noticed that the building and grounds were well-kept, providing a pleasant environment for residents. A bright, sunny room was available, which was ideal. The manager agreed to accept
her, and she duly moved there for what turned out to be the last few weeks of her life. I was impressed with the individual, compassionate care provided by the staff. Nursing staff sought medical advice when appropriate and ensured that she was comfortable, enabling visits from some of her many friends. I was contacted whenever necessary and was grateful for the support offered to me by staff during this time. It is a great comfort to know that her last days were spent in such pleasant conditions among friendly and caring people.

Our father spent almost three years at Sussexdown after he could not look after himself at home. He has always been treated with respect and dignity and made to feel part of the family that run and work at the home. With a variety of activities and entertainment, the residents as well catered for. Having
a nursing wing as well as a residential wing was one of the reasons for selecting this care home, and it proved to be an excellent choice, as our father was moved into the nursing wing where he was lovingly looked after during his final weeks of life when he required for that bit extra nursing care. Cannot rate the home highly enough; lovely staff, first class.

My dad has been in the Princess Alexandra House (Dementia Unit) at Sussexdown for almost 3-years. He is very happy there and especially enjoys singing, dancing and the various activities on offer to him each day. The unit is clean and well run by caring staff, who are friendly, kind and understand Dad's
needs. He is treated with dignity by both the day and night staff, who respect the limitations his age brings. His well-furnished room is bright, with an en-suite shower, toilet and basin. He has his own memorabilia to make it feel like his own home. From the moment I walked into Sussexdown, I knew it was the right care home for my dad.

My mum spent the last 11 months of her life at Sussexdown. Despite this being throughout the pandemic, the staff made so much effort for my family to remain connected to mum. We were all so grateful for that and of course being able to visit her again not long before she died. The nursing staff were

My nan has been a resident of the dementia unit since 2019, and she seems very happy here. She is always smiley, clean and overall happy. The area is very clean and tidy, and the food always looks delicious. The staff are always welcoming, chatty and very approachable. Obviously, since the pandemic,
I haven’t been able to visit as much as I would like, so hopefully, things will return to normal soon. Very well done, and a massive thank you to all the staff for all you’ve done for my nan during this time.

First visit to see Father in some months due to Covid restrictions. Visit therefore brief. However, I can say how much we appreciate the care and attention Father receives, particularly during these tough times. All staff are approachable and questions answered even though they must be very busy. House
and surroundings calm and clean, within restrictions improved by Covid, then couldn't ask for more. Hopefully, life will return to normal soon, and life improves for all residents and staff.

This review is conducted on behalf of my mother as she suffers from dementia. Overall, Sussexdown care home is well run and organised but has more recently appeared to suffer staffing shortages and high turnover. The nursing staff have remained consistent and are very dependable, but there is a need
for management to ensure that notification changes are routinely managed. The ground and communal rooms are excellent, but more attention is required in cleaning and decorating residents tooms and communal toilet facilities.

In line with the CQC published in early 2019 relating to 2018, improvements in the dementia unit are required to ensure a service focused on care is provided in the future. My father has occupied 3 bedrooms. Each time, the room has not been ready and not clean. He has been left unattended on several
occasions when he clearly needed assistance. Improved management is required to ensure a more proactive, complete and interactive service is provided to the residents. Closer monitoring is needed when there is clear evidence of significant weight loss in a short period of time. The staff are very friendly, want to help and are easy to talk to. We are therefore hopeful that once the proposed changes (that have been documented) are implemented, the service will improve and we can publish a better review.

My mother is in the nursing wing of Sussexdown as she has a number of physical ailments which make her very frail. Nursing care has been limited and on several occasions, basic needs have had to be pointed out by family members before being addressed adequately.
Her medical conditions have not been
adequately explained by nursing staff/management, to care staff. She is partially sighted and quite deaf but despite being in her 90's, is mentally very sharp.
It is disappointing then, that she is frequently left alone, often without invitation or encouragement to join in entertainment activities.
The upper floor of the nursing wing is regularly unattended by staff and call bell response times are very variable. I have seen a delay of 30 minutes in response to bell activation.
Care staff are almost all pleasant and well-meaning but one gets the impression that they lack sympathetic, management direction and that there are too few of them.

My mother is generally very content and happy at the home, sleeps well and is well cared for in the main. Over the last 2.5 years, there have been few occasions when I have complained - sometimes on the cleanliness of the room. Supper time food quality and very occasionally a carer if I felt things
could have been handled differently. However, all in all, it is comforting for me to know my mother is being very well looked after and that the staff care about her.

“I am passionate about delivering high standards of care and maintaining dignity, and I love making a difference – particularly when someone is in the later part of their life. I also have a 12 year old dog, who is thoroughly enjoying trips out in the beautiful West Sussex countryside!”


Lynne joined Sussexdown in November, just after our recent CQC report. Lynne has worked in the health sector for over 46 years and successfully managed care homes for the past 22 years, ensuring they are not only rated good by CQC but exceed resident and family expectations.


Lynne has relocated from the north of England to take on the role of Home Manager at Sussexdown, as well as being closer to her family. In the past she has run her own health and social care enterprises, worked in the NHS and local communities; including councils developing work and communications between the statutory and non-statutory sectors.


Having immediately settled into life at Sussexdown, Lynne has brought experience, stability and the highest quality of care, both medically and holistically that benefit each and every resident in our care – and judging on the feedback, their families and the team can’t speak highly enough of her either.
