My mother has been in this wonderful care home for almost 4 years. She has dementia and now unable to feed herself. She is always clean and tidy and has regular showers and hair washes (which in elderly people is not always easy to achieve) Her room is light, airy and always clean. All staff are so
friendly and welcoming when we visit. We find the lead nurses always easy to talk to and if we have any queries they are happy to answer them. Staff are efficient, caring, respectful and treat all residents with dignity.

My Mum was treated with dignity up until her death. I was kept informed all the way to the end, I think the home did everything they could to make her last days as good as they could. I cannot fault them in anyway.

My husband has dementia and is bed-bound, cannot feed himself, and is doubly incontinent. I cannot fault the care he receives. He is always clean and tidy and in clean bedding. His room is very comfortable, light, airy, and very clean. The carers are lovely people, very attentive and friendly, and treat
him with dignity. They are respectful when engaging with him and they answer any questions I may ask. Cups of tea/coffee are always offered to me when I visit. His appointed carers regularly ask me if I have any concerns. The nurses and lead nurses are very efficient, friendly and so caring. Very available when I visit if I need to ask anything.

Myself and family always feel a calmness and serene atmosphere whenever we come to visit. The attention and care given to the residents is fantastic. The surroundings outside and the freedom for the residents to roam outside too are a big bonus. Everywhere is kept beautifully clean too.

Dad stayed at Askham House for 2 weeks in July. He is in the late stages of Alzheimer's and Vascular Dementia. The previous care home we tried couldn't cope with him as he is very physically able and would try and escape.
At Askham House, there is nothing too much for the carers. If Dad wanted to walk,
they walked with him and it didn't matter what time of day or night this was. There are beautiful gardens surrounding the buildings and the carers would walk outside with him. The Head of Care and Nursing is amazing and ensured that we were not worried and that Dad was given lots of attention. He looked very happy every day when we visited and also looked super healthy. Our previous experience left us really concerned as he had been given medication daily so that he would stay still.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Askham House and we will definitely be taking Dad back for further breaks.
Thank you!

Lack of stimulation. Lack of human contact. Lack of outside exercise. Risk of dehydration due to lack of drinks offered.

I feel my mother is well cared for, the staff have got to know her and how to react to her ways as she cannot communicate how she now feels. I feel for us as a family, having to place a parent in a care home, which is extremely hard, we have found the best place for her and us as a whole for her to
be.

Reply from Mavrick Feast, Operations Manager at Askham House

Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a positive review. We're elated to read that you are happy with the standards of care your mother receives. We understand that this was a hard decision for your family to make but we are glad you are assured of the decisions made. I have dated this comment for October but is for every day my husband has been in their care. This home is outstanding. Our family are so proud to say that he is in there. Through the past couple of years with covid around it has been so challenging for us all. We had the great comfort of knowing he
is well cared for, especially under the extreme pressure they have had. Every time I visit my husband he is very well presented. Lovely and smart, shaved and really tidy hair. For a dementia patient, this can be very hard work for the staff. Thank you to Askham House and the Askham Village Community.

Reply from Aliyyah-Begum Nasser, Director at Askham House

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to express this. We are so touched to receive such thoughtful and detailed feedback. It is a pleasure to have you and your husband as part of our community and we will be sure to share your comments with our team.

Dad spent two weeks here at the beginning of January 2019, he was receiving end of life care. The level of care, attention and kindness shown to both Dad and myself was exceptional.
Dad had a lovely room and bathroom which was perfect for his needs. The staff were always on hand to support both of
us with whatever we needed. I am so thankful that Dad was lucky enough to get a room in Askham House, it was definitely the right thing to do for both of us. I was able to revert back to being his daughter and spend quality time with him knowing that all the staff were there to care for and nurse him as required.
I have no complaints whatsoever, only enormous thanks to everyone who cared for Dad and made his last days more comfortable.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.062)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.062) out of 10 for Askham House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.362 for Askham House is calculated as follows: ( (49 Excellents x 5) + (36 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 94 Ratings = 4.362

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Askham House is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
