Symonds House is a lovely 55-bedded red brick Grade II listed building. The dual-registered nursing home is set in its own grounds in Linton - a thriving village 10 miles south of the City of Cambridge.

The majority of the rooms are single with en-suite facilities. All are tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished. All bedrooms have a washbasin, TV, telephone points and a window overlooking the pleasant but secluded garden.
Residents may bring their own furniture (space permitting) and mementos from home.

Security and safety are of the highest standards. The home is equipped throughout with a staff call system, smoke detectors, fire alarm and emergency lighting system.

Careful planning has ensured that personal attention and care is always available to all residents. It has embraced the small group home living concept to provide special accommodation and care in small units of seven to fourteen rooms.

Experienced nurses and care staff provide 24-hour care. All care staff receive comprehensive in-house training as well as attending any relevant study sessions run by the local health authority or other outside agencies.

All bedding and towels are provided and personal laundry is washed on site. Daily newspapers are delivered by prior arrangements. At meal times, residents are offered a choice of dishes, which are prepared using local produce whenever possible and snacks are readily available. Food is of a consistently high standard and menus are rotated regularly. Special dietary requirements are easily catered for.

My husband has been in Symonds House for sixteen months now. He has settled in well with a lot of patience from the staff. The care he receives is excellent, the staff are very caring, observant, cheerful and always very welcoming. I cannot fault the staff at all.

My mum was admitted to Symonds House Linton for respite care from the hospital, I am so pleased she was, she had 1 to 1 care 24 hours a day which was extended to 2 weeks as she did not make the progress that had been hoped for.
The staff have been exceptional not only caring for Mum but also making
sure the extended family are okay. Always had time for a chat when it was needed. Sadly, Mum is now on end-of-life care. She is pain-free, clean, happy and comfortable. The building may not be the prettiest but the care by far makes up for that.
Thank you all at Symonds House, you are all doing an amazing job.

Reply from Angel Ibayan, Care Home Manager at Symonds House Nursing Home

Thank you for the very kind review. I will relay this to the whole staff to boost their morale even more. Thank you for always taking the time to talk to us every time you have queries about Mom's care. We will continue to look after Mom in the best possible way to ensure that she remains comfortable at all times.

I have to be honest, Symonds House is not pretty on the inside. This is the only negative thing I can say about the home. My mother-in-law is receiving respite care and is being looked after with an abundance of care and compassion. Every single carer and nurse has been so kind to Mum but also extends
this to her large family. We are always greeted with a smile and an update on her condition and usually asked if we would like a cuppa! Please don't judge Symonds house on appearance alone, the care given is exemplary and we all know which is most important.

Reply from Angel Ibayan, Care Home Manager at Symonds House Nursing Home

Thank you for your very kind words. I will definitely share this with the team. We will continue to endeavour to improve our surroundings and facilities. Once again, thank you very much for recognising our team's efforts.

My mother had five falls in total in this home, none ever witnessed, always told she had been found on the floor, one fall resulting in a fractured pelvis. This fall was never reported to safeguarding but my mother was charged for extra care as they didn’t have enough staff to look after her one on
one. The staff shortages were never reported to the QCQ for that time. The next fall resulted in a broken hip again, nobody saw the fall but they picked her up and put her in bed. Ten hours later she was finally taken to the hospital where she ended up having palliative surgery and will never walk again. Several times we reported the cleanliness of my mother's room this unfortunately never changed.

Reply from Angelica Ibayan RGN RMA, Home Manager at Symonds House Nursing Home

We can only apologise for the upset the current situation has caused the family. Service users who walk with purpose are free to access all areas of the units they live in. We try our best to ensure that the environment they live in is safe. With anyone who independently mobilises comes risks, one of which is falls. On all forms on hand, the service user was trying to get up on her own hence the staff assisted her to do so. Our protocol is to immobilise a fallen resident regardless of if it is witnessed or unwitnessed fall. In this situation, the service user was adamant to get up and was struggling hence staff assisted her. After a couple of hours, she showed discomfort and pain, emergency services were called immediately but unfortunately, we do not have control over their arrival. The current management is unable to comment on events that had happened in the past. We choose not to comment on the cleanliness as we are going to be at risk of breaching confidentiality.

My mother was admitted from the hospital only four weeks before she passed. I am so glad her last weeks were at Symonds House. The manager and her team are wonderful, kind, caring people - every member of the team is supportive. Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, I thank them.

Overall, the staff in Mum's unit are very helpful and kind.
I am concerned that there appear to be two residents with quite a server levels of dementia, and I worry about Mum's safety at times.
There seems to have been a reduction in the number of activities which has had an impact on Mum's mental
capacity.
I was disappointed to hear that Mum has tested positive for Covid, but no family member was advised.

Reply from Karen Osborne, Administrator at Symonds House Nursing Home

Thank you for the feedback, it is very appreciated. Concerns regarding the safety of residents, we always aim to put the residents in the most suited area for their needs. If any residents have behaviour issues they will be monitored and if required additional support given, and if necessary 1-1 care support will be provided to ensure no other residents are at risk. Activities are now being provided 5 days a week and also individuals on weekends who are unable to attend. Covid - we acknowledge this was a miscommunication within our team, and we aim to make sure this does not happen again.

Dad became a resident of Symonds House Nursing Home in September 2018, following a long battle with vascular dementia. During his time there, we found the levels of care and support provided to Dad to be exceptional. The staff are extremely dedicated, professional and hard-working. Whether it be the
nurses, carers, housekeeping team, kitchen staff, management team etc, they all had a crucial role to play in providing Dad with such a high level of care. Sadly, in the last couple of weeks, Dad passed away peacefully. The Symonds House team were so supportive to Dad and our family in those final weeks, always respectful and professional but showing great compassion and support. A heartfelt thank you to the team from our family. From our personal experience, we can highly recommend Symonds House and their amazing team.

My mother was admitted to Symonds House for palliative care around September 2020 from a local hospital. In an already difficult time plus covid, I was happy to find the care home so quaint and comfortable. And I was able to visit with PPE.
The staff were/are so happy helpful and professional, and
made my difficult time more bearable. Always willing to offer a drink, a chat, and were there for my mum when she most needed their expert help in this awful pandemic.
Thank you, everyone, as I said many times, I couldn't have done it without your help.
Keep doing what you do so well, let's hope now your valuable work is recognized as its
much appreciated and needed.
Thank you, true heroes.

When my mother-in-law was transferred to Symonds House from hospital, she was in a very poor state of health with dementia and Alzheimer's. With the dedicated care and individual attention from all the staff, her health and well being improved immensely. For the next 14 months, we could not have asked
for a better team of carers to support her and she became very fond of everyone there. The care team were also a support for the family and during visits would come to chat with us about her condition and how they were adapting to various needs. The building may be less than perfect from the outside, but this is no reflection of the superb care within.

We are now one year on since my husband became a resident at Symonds House, suffering from mixed dementia. He receives outstanding care from all the staff who show patience, understanding and empathy to his complex needs. Also, there is exceptional support for all of our family, from friendly and devoted
staff at all levels. We are very grateful for the reassurance that Symonds House has given us.

My mother has vascular dementia and has great confusion and memory loss. She was adamant she did not want to move into a nursing home. Initially, she was very resistant but with the care and kindness of the staff, she agreed to stay for a short time. She has now been there for 2 months and is a permanent
resident and says she never wants to go home. The staff have made her feel special and she loves all the positive attention she receives. Whilst Symonds House may not be the smartest of care homes we visited, it is certainly the friendliest and feels comfortable and welcoming. It is a huge relief to me that mum is safe and cared for and I can honestly say she is happier than I have ever known her. It was a spur of the moment decision to visit Symonds House and luckily a room became available very quickly - serendipity or fate? I don't know which, but it has allowed me to sleep at night knowing mum is okay.

My aunt had been a service user at Symonds House for a number of years. Sometimes she could be quite difficult but always received a lot of help from the carers. I used to visit almost every week. If I was concerned about anything I could talk openly to staff and any issues would be dealt with. My aunt
recently passed away and was treated with respect and love. The manager is very competent and has done so much for the home.

My parents went into Symonds House in November 2016 aged 91 and 93 as they were unable to care for themselves in their own home any more.
As a family, we have been so pleased with the care they have received. My mother passed away in March this year and the care my father has received since then has
been wonderful. He has dementia and at times is very upset at losing his wife of 70 years. The carers spend time with him, nothing is too much trouble for them. I am so pleased that my father is safe and cared for in such a friendly place.

A very clean nursing home with professional and dedicated staff. My wife was looked after very well during her stay. Whenever a doctor were to visit, I always felt well informed by staff via phone calls. A pleasure to deal with. I have no criticisms.

When looking for a placement for my father, I was pointed in the direction of Symonds House, by a friend, who had placed their parent in their care. I went to visit and was shown around, it had a friendly, home from home feel about it, and everyone I passed greeted me, both staff and residents alike.
The room was very clean and fresh, and adequate to cater to my father's needs, the day room was warm and friendly, and the food being served at the time looked appetising and nutritious. I did not hesitate and, placed my father within two weeks, he seemed very happy and got on with all the staff and residents during the time he was there. I could not fault the Nursing staff because as soon as a medical problem occurred they would contact me immediately. Would I recommend this home, most definitely yes.

Following a fall and an extended period in hospital, my mother was transferred to Symonds House, close to where I live.
On arrival, she was seriously underweight, had life-threatening health issues and was very disturbed and distressed.
Eighteen months on her, weight, health and cognitive functioning
have all improved quite remarkably. The staff have built up a rapport with her that has really helped to reduce her anxiety levels and improve her ability to communicate. I have a great video of her laughing and singing on her 90th birthday. All my family are very happy with the improvement in her condition and the quality of care and support.

You can imagine my apprehension when my father was put into a care home from hospital with such a lot of bad publicity in the media and him being 91 years old. Well, I have visited on the above dates and I am extremely surprised at his progress. A picture of him on his first day at the care home did
not look like my dad at all but what a transformation now. The excellent nursing that he is receiving and general care is really impressive. The food is excellent, I have dinner when I visit. The kindness shown to him and myself is excellent, from the receptionist right through nursing staff, docotrs, cleaning staff. You should all be proud of what you do. In fact when I got to 91 I would love to stay there.

Current Review Score: 8.5 (8.492)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.5 (8.492) out of 10 for Symonds House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.375 for Symonds House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (54 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 80 Ratings = 4.375

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.117 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Symonds House Nursing Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.517

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
