The Gables, at Gorleston, offers residential care packages, within scenic surroundings and not far from the sea air at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Residents have the choice to take part in numerous activities and events organised by the service, including an annual fete, with in-house hairdressing, manicures and hand massages also available.

A converted Victorian mansion, The Gables has retained much of the charm of its original architecture while being organised with comfortable furnishings in mind. A sheltered patio is popular during the warmer weather and residents are welcome to bring their own possessions.

Dad was taken to the Gables Care Home on December 23rd 2024. Lovely greeting, very friendly staff, went above and beyond to support him and his family.

Unfortunately my aunt who was 88 at the time, was "allegedly" assaulted by a carer. The very person who was meant to be looking after her. She suffered a black eye, which she couldn't open. All of this was witnessed by another carer. But due to insufficient evidence, the police couldn't press charges.
The "alleged" attacker was suspended and dismissed several weeks later. My aunt is on end of life care and is suffering from advanced Alzheimer's dementia and weighs approximately 3.5 stone. Hardly a threat to anyone. Due to her frailty, she's stuck there. Other than that, the Gables is okay.

Everyone at The Gables was enormously saddened by the events you have related. I am sure that you appreciate that we cannot comment on the outcome of the Police enquiry other than to assure you that we cooperated fully throughout. If I may, I would reassure you that we suspended the member of staff immediately whilst the Police completed their enquiries. We were not able to formally terminate their employment until the Police had completed their work. I thank you for having the kindness to mention at the end of your review that you are otherwise satisfied with the care we deliver at The Gables. Your aunt is a lovely lady and we are doing everything we can to ensure her continued stay with us is as comfortable as we can make it.

The staff are friendly and make you welcome. When handling concerns you can express your concerns and most of the time they are acted on. The residents have enjoyed having an activities person. Mum loves the food and snacks. The security is good. Things to work on. Washing of hair, hands and food under
nails and feet not washed so dirt collects between toes. Pressure cushions smell of urine and commodes often smell. Rooms need decorating and carpets replaced. The garden could be used a lot more.

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, as you are aware, your mum does not always accept assistance with her personal care although we will continue to look at different ways of achieving this. The home is in the process of replacing carpets around the home with several of the communal areas already completed and I am hoping we can continue with this in areas requiring replacements. We have taken on board your comments around the cleanliness of the room and will ensure this is addressed as soon as possible.

My brother-in-law actually asked us to arrange for him to stay at The Gables as he had become unwell and realised he couldn't take care of himself and his father had been a short-term resident a few years back.
During his stay, his health declined quite rapidly and he was eventually admitted to hospital
where his decline sadly continues to worsen. But while he was at the Gables the staff were really supportive, caring and kind. They did their utmost to assist him, keeping us informed every step of the way.
I would recommend The Gables to anyone seeking a caring and safe place for their family members who require that extra helping hand.

Following discharge from hospital following major surgery this 92-year-old man on end-of-life care has and is receiving extraordinary care and attention at this care home.
From the top down, the staff are clearly a concerned team and they are all doing all that can be done for the resident's welfare
and comfort.
It is very comforting to see that the care and surroundings, plus the effort that has gone into his room facilities is paying serious dividends in terms of end-of-life comfort and care.
I am, to say the least, very pleased that he is receiving the best of attention at this stage of life, and commend the staff for their outstanding care practices and the provision of the essential resources to accommodate, they are a credit to the profession.

My brother has been at The Gables for the last 11 months in that time he was very settled and thrived, he loved all the staff from the care staff to management. He was treated with love and respect, sadly my brother passed away this week. The staff and management were fantastic, would recommend for
families looking for care.

My mum has resided here for more than eight years. She settled in nicely after a few weeks and has been very happy. She always praised the girls for making her feel at home, always there to help when needed and very friendly. The manager and senior staff were always willing to sort out any minor issues.
Sadly Mum passed away over the Easter period, aged 101! I will always be grateful to them all for making her last eight years happy ones.

My aunt moved into The Gables in April 2023 and from day 1 was very well looked after and the carers, kitchen staff, cleaning staff and the management were great. She was very happy there but sadly she passed away in February this year.

The staff at the Gables were excellent and looked after my friend well. However, the quality of the food was very poor, meals served cold and for the first week of her stay, there were no vegetables. Also, the activities programme we were told about at our viewing turned out to be non-existent. My friend
was at the Gables for 3 weeks and asked me to get her moved. As stated, the staff are excellent and caring but for people without dementia, this is not an ideal home. Also as she is independent and could shower herself the lack of hand bars was not ideal.

It's disappointing to hear about the problems you have mentioned as none of these were highlighted whilst your friend stayed at the home. Had we have known about your concerns at the time we would have done everything in our power to rectify them.
Our menus offer a wide variety of choices and we ensure there is always a daily choice which includes vegetables. Our activity provision is planned in advance and displayed around the home. Whilst we endeavour to keep to the programme, inevitably things will change. I know that your friend was offered to take part in some of these but declined.
I'm glad you were finally able to find a suitable alternative to be closer to your friend which you originally wanted.

Although my Mum was only in The Gables for a few weeks, she settled really quickly and was cared for really well. Her room had views of the harbour, was always clean and she always looked really comfortable. All the staff were really friendly and always had time for a chat. They supported me and my
family through her final days and did everything they could for us all.

Mum was in The Gables for over a year and sadly passed away in April 2023. Her condition deteriorated over that time due to Dementia, so her care needs were constantly changing. Throughout the whole time, her care was exemplary, and I cannot praise every one of the staff enough.

Just like to say the senior is very understanding. Brilliant at her job, always there to answer my questions and sort out any problems.
My dad is finding it hard to settle in after living on his own. Some staff need to be more understanding of these residents that have to go into care and leave their
whole life they know behind and come to terms with moving into a small bedroom they now have to call home, with very little of their own belongings.
More passion and empathy wouldn't go amiss.

Recently, my mum had urgent need to be housed in a safe and secure environment. With the assistance of social services, a room was offered at The Gables Care Home. Immediately, my fears and worries were alleviated. I cannot thank the Staff enough for all their care, patience and attention given to my
mum, since her arrival nothing is too much trouble. She tells me how helpful and loving the staff are and how nice the food is and it is lovely to see her smiling again. Once again, thank you to the management and support staff of The Gables.

My aunt had been a resident of The Gables for six and a half years and was extremely well looked after. Unfortunately, she passed away in November but the care and compassion the staff showed her was above and beyond and we are very grateful.

Well, this is my last and final review of the Gables. My dad had nearly made his 8 years on September 16th which would have been his birthday and he would have been 81 - he also went into the Gables on his birthday. He had chronic mobility, Parkinson's disease and dementia. Sadly he deteriorated very
quickly with not being able to hardly talk and swallow which was so, so distressing. He finally passed peacefully on 4/09/2022 thank God. We now know he is at peace and has not got to suffer anymore - sadly life is very cruel to some. My mum and I would like to thank every single member of staff at the Gables for the love they gave him and my mum and I. I had to clear out his room and the staff were so upset as I know they loved him. It's been a horrid 8 years watching a loved one fade away but we get comfort he was looked after right until the end and every single member of staff knows what we think of them. For one last time, from the bottom of our hearts - thank you all.

I chose the Gables for my sister because it was near to my home and I would be able to visit regularly. I deemed this important as she had dementia and lacked capacity. From my first conversation with the manager, I knew I had made the right choice. No effort was spared to assist me in settling my sister.
In fact, her physical condition improved greatly and I and her visitors said they had noticed a marked improvement in her since admission. We were shocked when my sister passed away some 6 weeks later. Indeed it is fair to say that the staff felt so too. This situation however does not detract from the care she received during this period.

All the staff are compassionate and caring. They treat my mum with great sensitivity and kindness. The staff work hard to ensure there are plenty of activities and entertainment and I feel reassured that my mum is safe and happy there.

My mum lived in The Gables for 3 and a half years. The staff were always open, friendly, well trained and extremely caring. Everyone treated her with kindness and respect, which just increased as her dementia took hold and she became more difficult.
I would highly recommend The Gables as a care home.
