The Gables, at Gorleston, offers residential care packages, within scenic surroundings and not far from the sea air at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Residents have the choice to take part in numerous activities and events organised by the service, including an annual fete, with in-house hairdressing, manicures and hand massages also available.

A converted Victorian mansion, The Gables has retained much of the charm of its original architecture while being organised with comfortable furnishings in mind. A sheltered patio is popular during the warmer weather and residents are welcome to bring their own possessions.

The provider believes in on-going training programmes, though carers are employed for their personal qualities as well as their skills, in order to achieve warmth and friendliness in a homely environment.

Our relation was admitted to Gables in December 2020, during Covid, from hospital. He was incontinent and hardly able to walk. During his time there, visits were limited due to Covid. As restrictions eased, I could visit and take him out. The staff were all lovely and really took good care of him, resulting
in good mobility and regaining his dignity. We cannot thank the Gables enough for what they have done as it would have been very challenging, due to his nature and dementia. Thank you so much.

My father was put in this awful place in March up until October this year. Extremely unfriendly staff and the manager is a joke. Horrified at the so-called care my dad received, still fighting to get this place closed.

On occasions, relationships with families are not as good as they might ideally be, regrettably, this was such an instance. A number of complaints were raised and we investigated all of them. Where we felt we could have done better we said as much, but in all bar very few instances, review by ourselves found your complaints to be unfounded. Where complaints were referred to the Local Authority and CQC their own investigations exonerated us. It is our understanding that we are not the only care provider against whom you have lodged complaints. We would draw to your attention to the fact that our staff have reported issues of verbal abuse from family members during this difficult episode which left them feeling threatened and intimidated. As an employer, we do not tolerate such abuse and we will seriously consider taking legal action when this occurs.
We are proud of the CQC report which rates the home as ‘GOOD’ and the many positive reviews which have been consistently high.

Mum was a resident at The Gables for almost three years before she passed away, recently. She no longer knew who we were and the staff at The Gables became her family, as well as providing her care. I found that all the staff were helpful and supportive in helping me to keep as much contact with Mum
as was possible. This was quite difficult, as I live almost 300 miles away. I cannot speak too highly of the support that my husband and I received on the night Mum passed away. The staff on duty were so caring and considerate. I feel they helped Mum to go with dignity. Several members of staff said very positive things to me about Mum, including the fact that you could laugh and joke with her. That tells me that she was happy there.

My ninety seven old mother went into The Gables last October just before another wave of Covid-19. We were not allowed into the building or to see her to explain the reason for her not being allowed out of the building nor for visitors to be allowed in. The only communication was via telephone, email
or the homes laptop for face time. The carers looked after her well and the food was good as she would soon have told me if not but we didn’t really get to see how caring they were and the affection they had for her until her last few days of her life when we were allowed in on compassionate grounds. Thank you to all concerned.

Mum was not the most amiable of people, but the staff worked their way around this to keep her as comfortable and happy as possible, especially during the Covid period. The manager was exceptional and very good at solving any issues we had with Mum and overcoming any problems promptly.

My husband was transferred to The Gables from hospital following a stroke earlier this year. Unfortunately, due to Covid, he was isolated in his room for 14 days, which he found very stressful. After that we were able to have short visits in the garden. He was very well looked after and found all the
staff to be friendly and caring. The meals were very good.

During Covid-19 I have missed my dad, but have been updated regularly. When visiting it is amazing how they are keeping residents safe and the fact they have had no Covid-19 cases in the home at all.

This is my personal review of my stay at The Gables. My two weeks rest booked was extended because of the coronavirus and lockdown.
I can truly say that it was a pleasure for me to be in a safe home and be in the care of all such caring staff, they will be very much missed. The Gables is situated in
a beautiful location with the sea and sand across the road and a pleasant garden to sit in and enjoy the sea air. My extended stay at The Gables gave me the chance to build up my strength with all the good food and care received. Many thanks.

My father spent his final months at The Gables. During that time, I felt that he received the highest standard of care, support and kindness. I felt like I was a part of the team around my father and we worked together to ensure he had the best care and quality of life. When I made suggestions about
care or treatment, I was always listened to and when there were risks, staff handled this with due care and diligence.
Communication was always easy and constructive and I felt that both my father's needs and my own were always attended to. The staff were always caring and kind and the environment was well maintained.
My father was treated with respect and staff maintained his dignity at all times. He was happy there.

My mum came to The Gables after a series of falls resulting in hospitalisation. Since being here, her health, mental state and happiness have vastly improved and she has returned to being the mum I had 3 years ago. The staff are all fantastic and nothing is too much trouble for them. Mum is treated
with dignity and respect at all times and is encouraged to be sociable and happy. I can't thank them enough.

I didn't want my dad to end up in a care home, I don't suppose anyone wants that for their dad. However, sometimes it is unavoidable and due to the nature of my dad's illness, it was not possible to care for him at home. You read so much bad press about care homes in general so I was very worried about
him residing in one. I did lots of research of local care homes and decided that this one looked the best by far. During my dad's time at the home either myself, siblings or Mother visited him every afternoon and evening. During those visits, we were made very welcome and witnessed nothing but care, kindness and respect shown, not only to my dad, but to all of the residents.
I know that we made the right decision in choosing The Gables and thank the staff from the bottom of my heart for all their hard work, kindness and compassion shown to my dad. Sadly my dad passed away due to his illness but it is of considerable comfort to me knowing he was cared for exceptionally well in his final weeks.

My mum has been at The Gables for a few months now and is settling in gradually as it has been a big change in her life, from looking after herself to being looked after. The management and staff have been excellent in helping Mum adjust to her new life in a new home.
Just recently was Mum's 90th birthday,
which she enjoyed immensely. We had a small family lunch party, rounded off in the lounge with the other residents with a
birthday cake to share, a welcome surprise for her. All this was organised by the management and team, who do a great job daily.
My mum only lives a couple of minutes away from me and my family. I try to see her as much as I can, but I have no worries about her being at The Gables, as I know
she is getting the care and attention she needs in a safe environment. I can't thank you all enough.

My mum is a recent arrival at The Gables and is taking time to settle in. This week she enjoys a very special birthday and the team worked really well to provide a day for Mum and the family to remember.
We were delighted to have a family gathering and meal in the small lounge, all to ourselves, which
Mum appreciated and she welcomed the attention she got about her birthday and new hair-do. Small gestures but all help her to feel welcome and part of the Gables community.
Their approach is to build up trust to enable her to feel safe and we all feel this is working, going at her pace might be slow, there are no quick wins here, but it means the team get to know more about her.
In addition, support for family members has been appreciated and helps us all to come to terms with this new and challenging time of Mums life.
