Very helpful staff. The home has a friendly feeling about it. Catering and drinks for residents are of the highest quality. The cleaners are always gong to keep everything tidy. All in all The Hawthorns is run in a professional manner, with a personal touch.

I required a nursing home for my sister who was dying of pancreatic cancer. My wife found this care home located close to our residence. A neighbouring surgery was another important consideration to enable monitoring of her health. I was stuck by the informality of the home and its homely atmosphere
and unlike an institutional set-up that I imagined many homes to provide. The staff were particularly attentive and supportive. Many activities and trips were organised for the residents. My sister made use of the enclosed rear garden and her room was well laid out and bright. The management were very approachable, but my sister was not keen on the food. Generally, a lovely environment for my dying sister.

Thanks for looking after my mother-in-law. She has received great care from the staff.
The rooms are tired with no ensuites and no views. A view of a brick wall is no way to die!
All staff have been superb and caring.

My husband has been in The Hawthorns for one year. Not only is the home spotlessly clean, but the feeling in the home is warm and caring. He was beautifully looked after, and any difficulty was dealt with promptly. The family too was thought about. I am very grateful.

My brother came to The Hawthorns for end-of-life care on the 7th of August 2023. He was always treated with the utmost dignity and respect. The care and support given to him and our family was outstanding. He was always kept clean and was thoroughly spoilt in his last weeks of life. His room was clean
and comfortable. The manager gave us a warm welcome every time we visited and nothing was too much trouble. I can thoroughly recommend The Hawthorns, your loved one will be well cared for there.

I'm the brother of an "end-of-life care" resident at the home. We wish to express our profound thanks to all the staff for the quality of care they displayed, whatever their involvement in the operation of their home. It was notable whenever we were there how everyone helped in the smooth running of
the home.

Exceptional standard of continuing care for my father. The staff are diligent, caring and appear happy in their work. My father always looks clean and well presented and I'm always informed of any health issues. The staff truly get to know their residents as proven recently when my father had to go
to hospital and the paramedics praised the staff for their knowledge of my dad's health history.
I would thoroughly recommend The Hawthorns Care Home.

Although the people are caring the building is tired. Maintenance is poor and the management seems unwilling to spend the money on getting professionals in, instead relying on a handyman who does his best but he is not a tradesman.

No words could express the depth of our family's collective gratitude for the highest quality of care and support consistently extended to our late mother whilst she was a resident at The Hawthorns care home for over five years. Truly a home-from-home - Outstanding!

My previous experience of residential care was some time ago but I was anxious when it was decided my sister needed respite care (at that stage). Any fears myself and her three daughters had, were soon banished with the extreme kindness of the staff, the welcome she was given and the room allocated.
At that time, she was physically weak and emotionally empty. She is now joining in social activities. Within three weeks, it was agreed it was unsafe for her to return home and she wants to stay - a decision we all support. A huge thank you to The Hawthorns.

I have found the staff at Hawthornes helpful and very pleasant. Foodwise, only porridge every morning - eggs would be a change. I have also noticed drinks are left on the tray - not helped to drink - hence cold tea. Overall, is good. I cannot give a true review on certain conditions, due to covid.

I was very pleased when my wife was discharged from hospital to The Hawthorns as my own mother was there from 2010 to 2015 and the care she received was excellent. My wife has secondary progressive MS and a multiple of other problems, and having to be hoisted and loss of bowel/bladder etc. She has been
there 5 months now and with the help of NHS/continued care. I hope she can remain as she is very happy there. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and management and they have bent over backwards for her. All in all, an excellent care home in a lovely old house in a beautiful part of Norwich.

Having recently spent five weeks in the hospital and not allowed any visitors because of covid, I was admitted to The Hawthorns in January 2022, where I was warmly welcomed. The care I am receiving here is quite different to the hospital where the people were shouting out at night and were fighting
the nurses with their feet, causing me extreme tension.

A safe and friendly care home in a time of need for short term care. The friendly and helpful staff make up for the aged interior of the building.

Our family member was admitted to the Hawthorns care home for palliative/end of life care. The care he received was excellent and we felt very reassured he was being cared for appropriately. The staff were kind, professional and friendly. We would recommend the Hawthornes for this type of care.

My mother was transferred from the hospital to The Hawthorns for end of life care. She was treated with compassion, dignity and respect. All staff were extremely attentive to her needs and nothing was too much trouble.
The staff were also very considerate of my needs in a difficult situation. I was
kept fully informed. The home has a quiet relaxed atmosphere. The meals are homecooked with a good variety on offer.

This is the best care home I know of. Social services said my Mum couldn't spend her own money on the care home of her choice. They told the manager of the Hawthorns not to offer my mum a place and followed that up by saying there was a safeguarding issue, but wouldn't say what it was. The manager of
this care home provided my mum with safety and comfort she has never experienced in either her childhood or adulthood. The remainder of Mum's life was spent in quality care, support and dignity. The management, administration and staff of this home are second to none. They provided my mum with a death that was so peaceful that it was barely noticeable, even though I was brushing her hair at the time.

The manager and staff at The Hawthorns always act in a professional and caring manner.
They are always approachable and ready to listen to any concerns and react in an appropriate and timely way.
During the pandemic, I have been kept up to date with any procedural changes. In the end, my friend did
not wish to have the weekly visits (not wanting to leave his room), but they did try hard to facilitate them.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.233)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.233) out of 10 for The Hawthorns is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.433 for The Hawthorns is calculated as follows: ( (61 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 104 Ratings = 4.433

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Hawthorns is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 23 registered maximum number of service users is 4.6, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Deputy Manager

I have been at Hawthorns for over 10 years now. Starting as administrator and for the last 18 months as Residential Deputy Manager.

When I walked into Hawthorns for the first time, it was the first time I had stepped foot in a care home. I can honestly say that working here for over 10 years has been amazing.

I have learnt so much from my colleagues and from the residents that live here. We are a very small home so have a great relationship with each other, we are a family.

Hawthorns definitely has the home-from-home feel. We strive to provide the best care possible while enabling our residents to maintain as much independence as possible.

Judy

Judy Read

Job Title: Business Administrator

I was born just outside Norwich and, following an early career in retail management, I married and moved to Ipswich where I joined the Civil Service.

After bringing up my family I was offered a job as a care home administrator and have been working in that role ever since, having worked in two homes in Ipswich, one in Stowmarket and have now returned to Norwich where I am privileged to be part of the wonderful staff team at The Hawthorns.

Following 6th form, I left school but have studied part-time to gain an HNC in Business and a Level 5 in Health and Social Care.

The care home is where the residents live and I believe it is important to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, greet visitors in a friendly manner, answer phone calls in a timely manner and help both visitors and residents in any way I can.
