My partner was transferred from the hospital after being there for 5 weeks.
He has now been at The Hawthorns for 2 weeks where they have managed to engage him in conservation, get him eating again, starting to get him sitting in the chair for a while each day.
As a family, we appreciate that my partner
is terminally ill but the staff at The Hawthorns are really doing their best to make sure that his last days are as good as possible.

I find The Hawthorns to be a very happy home to be in. I spend all day every day with my wife 9-6 and the staff are very friendly and helpful all day. My wife has been a resident at The Hawthorns for 2 years now and although she cannot speak I know she is happy with all the staff.

The Hawthorns has provided a "home from home" for my mother. The staff are caring, humorous and attentive. Residents are treated as individuals and with great respect. There is always time for a kind word and a smile.

My husband was a resident for almost a month, during which he received excellent care and attention. The staff were all professional and so pleasant, polite and great tea makers. Whenever interacting with my husband, they used this name and showed him great respect, as well as to us. The home has a
great atmosphere and homely feel. I couldn't be more happy about the way he was treated.

We visited a resident at various times of the day and always found sufficient staff in attendance. All the staff were very friendly and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. They always treated the resident with care and dignity even when his mental state made him difficult to deal with. The resident
seemed to be very happy with the quality of the food.

My dad was a resident with The Hawthorns for some time. Sadly he passed away Saturday. I just wanted to express how grateful we are for the care and dignity that you showed my dad.

My mum spent the most time visiting my dad and it's been a great comfort to us knowing that he has been extremely well

looked after.

My kindest regards.

A year ago or less, maybe, management in the home was bad but now it is excellent, because of the change in manager. Staff are very caring to my mother, food is excellent and I always have a chat with carers who are very supportive to me. My mother is very well looked after, thankfully.

I feel very happy and content here. The carers are all gentle and helpful. We are allowed to watch TV and there's a lot of activities that we can join in. There are also rides in our local bus. Lots of trips. We went to the Cromer Pier show which was enjoyed by all of us. There is usually a weekly entertainer
in the lounge. A doctor attends weekly.

My husband has been in the nursing home for eight months, I visit every day. The way that he is cared for is the utmost concern for me, I can't praise the staff highly enough for the way that he is treated. The Hawthorns is like a second home to me. I have never seen or heard anything that has given
me the slightest concern.

Great staff which makes the care home a "home". Friendly, approachable and personable.
Excellent activities to engage residents and create an enjoyable atmosphere.
A "personal touch" to the care given acknowledged, which is warming to know that my dear grandad is well taken care of. Thank you.

We brought 12 young people to volunteer for 1 week to run activities with the residents. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff, given a room to base in, offered drinks whenever we wanted them and were managed excellently by the activities coordinator. The young people were kept entertained
and never felt left out or bored. They particularly enjoyed chatting with the residents about their past and learning lots from them. The young people were also offered sweets and snacks regularly. Despite the size of our group The Hawthorns even offered for us to come back an extra day so we could fill our timetable. Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable and enriching experience for both staff and the young people.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.233)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.233) out of 10 for The Hawthorns is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.433 for The Hawthorns is calculated as follows: ( (61 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 104 Ratings = 4.433

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Hawthorns is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 23 registered maximum number of service users is 4.6, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Deputy Manager

I have been at Hawthorns for over 10 years now. Starting as administrator and for the last 18 months as Residential Deputy Manager.

When I walked into Hawthorns for the first time, it was the first time I had stepped foot in a care home. I can honestly say that working here for over 10 years has been amazing.

I have learnt so much from my colleagues and from the residents that live here. We are a very small home so have a great relationship with each other, we are a family.

Hawthorns definitely has the home-from-home feel. We strive to provide the best care possible while enabling our residents to maintain as much independence as possible.

Job Title: Business Administrator

I was born just outside Norwich and, following an early career in retail management, I married and moved to Ipswich where I joined the Civil Service.

After bringing up my family I was offered a job as a care home administrator and have been working in that role ever since, having worked in two homes in Ipswich, one in Stowmarket and have now returned to Norwich where I am privileged to be part of the wonderful staff team at The Hawthorns.

Following 6th form, I left school but have studied part-time to gain an HNC in Business and a Level 5 in Health and Social Care.

The care home is where the residents live and I believe it is important to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, greet visitors in a friendly manner, answer phone calls in a timely manner and help both visitors and residents in any way I can.
