Very good care and thought has been put into my husband's time at Cornwallis Court. It is a great wrench to find that your husband of 61 years has to live elsewhere but those who care for him have made it as acceptable as possible.

As a friend of a Cornwallis resident and down as next of kin as she has no family. I have always been treated with great kindness and cooperation. The resident has been in Cornwallis for many years and has always seemed content.

My mother feels safe and cared for at all times.
She has lived in Cornwallis for seven years and has never regretted her decision to be in the home.

As a family and on behalf of my late mother, we are all so grateful for the wonderful care Mum received in her final weeks. She was treated with respect, dignity and tremendous kindness. Cornwallis Court has an atmosphere of peace and calm, the room was well appointed, clean and bright. The food was
of a high standard, and a suitable choice prepared for Mum at every mealtime. Most of all, the staff were angels, the registered nurses and the care assistants handled Mum with such kindness and made sure she was as comfortable as possible, in every way at all times. We will be forever grateful.

All the staff on the Nursing Unit and in Geoffrey Dickers House, located in Cornwallis Court, have been so wonderful looking after my mother, identifying her needs and providing the 24/7 care needed to make her time in Cornwallis Court a happy one. I can't thank everyone enough for all their support
both to Mum and the family during her last days with you. All the hugs were much needed.

We found all the staff to be very helpful, professional and caring at Cornwallis Court, both to my Aunt but also to my Uncle and other relatives, which was much appreciated.

In these days of so many bad reports about care homes, it was reassuring to see staff who clearly cared for the work they

do and residents they care for. I particular thank them for the effort they went to to make my Aunt's stay comfortable.

Mother has been a resident for two years. I have always found the care, staff and facilities to be excellent. She is very well cared for and lacks for nothing. I would and have recommended this home to others.

The grounds are well kept, although the main building is a little tired looking there is a lot of remedial work being undertaken.
The main thing I want to mention is the staff - from the manager down, everyone I have dealt with has been professional yet helpful and courteous, pleasant to talk to and
keeps me informed of anything affecting my father either when I am there or by telephone.
They really deserve high praise in my opinion.

Mum was treated as an individual and Mum received a high standard of care particularly during the last months of her life. Due to the nature of her illness which made it difficult for her to voice her needs, carers went to great lengths to identify needs and to communicate with her. The carers showed
kindness and respect in all aspects of her care.

My room is comfortable and big enough for my grandchildren to play with toys when they visit and for the adults to all sit-down. Regular staff are very good and caring, however, the standard of agency staff is variable. Where shifts are fully agency staffed, quality of care can suffer.

Reply from Kristin Mewald, Marketing & Communications Manager at Cornwallis Court

Thank you for your positive review of Cornwallis Court. We are glad to hear that you enjoy your room and feel that our service provided is of good quality. We endeavour to cover shifts with our own regular and bank staff; however, there are occasions when we have to use agency staff. We appreciate and understand residents’ feelings in this respect and are constantly working hard to ensure that all of our residents receive the expected standard of service.

In the absence of the entertainment person once carer stepped in and made shortbread and cakes with some residents. Enjoyable and successful. The following day the same carer did nails and foot baths with some residents. Very well done and all enjoyed. They need more of this.

I have been very satisfied with Cornwallis Court but at the moment it is going through a transition. The lounge has been out of action since May 2018 and the residents have missed out on monthly coffee mornings, the fete and many other activities. The delay is unacceptable and there seems to be no urgency.
The
bus has been in for repairs for months so there have been no outings. The residents are stuck in their rooms or the very small lounge in nursing and reception.
As an aside, the laundry regularly loose and ruin clothing. Managers are never in at weekends unless a certain outside group is there for coffee mornings.

Reply from Jan Gibbs, Home Manager at Cornwallis Court

Thank you for taking the time to review our Home. The refurbishment work commenced in May 2018. Due to circumstances beyond our control which relate to contractual building issues, this has delayed the initial anticipated completion date.
However, throughout this period, provision has been made to ensure that residents receive their regular daily activities programme and they have also had access to smaller lounge areas.
Safety has always been a priority and with contractors on site and the major work being undertaken a decision was made not to hold the summer fete this year.
We fully understand the impact that the delay has had on our residents, visitors and staff and we sincerely apologise; however, we are now looking forward to the reopening of our main lounge and are confident that it will be appreciated and enjoyed by all for many years to come.

I have been received here with every kindness and consideration.
I lost my husband recently and came here to try and adjust to the situation I find myself in now. The time here has helped me look to the future and plan sensibly ahead. I now know at a later date I could apply for acceptance here and
live with like-minded people in harmony and comfort. One of the overwhelming points which have arisen is the kindness and consideration when I was feeling at my lowest.

The care home is offering excellent care to my mother who presents with very challenging needs.
They leave no stone unturned in their efforts to ensure her care needs are met with the most appropriate care. The whole family are very pleased with the way our family member is being looked after. Thank
you so much Cornwallis Court.

My mother has on the whole been very well and sensitively looked after in the last 18 months and the patience with which the carers have dealt with her has been phenomenal. Although, as I know from bitter experience, she can be very difficult to care for, most of the staff seem to be very fond of her
and cope with all her foibles without complaint.
The only detrimental comment I have to make is regarding laundry!
New clothes (even well marked) keep disappearing and then we acquire other items that clearly don't belong to her. I even provided laundry bags to keep her clothes together in the machines and even though the carers use them, laundry staff seem to take the clothing out before it goes into the machine! Why?

My mother lives in the dementia wing at Cornwallis Court. She frequently says how helpful the staff are without being pushy. The staff attend to her needs very well and all staff know the names of every resident. It is easy to speak to staff if you have a query. The home has a very friendly feel to
it.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.292)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.292) out of 10 for Cornwallis Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.802 for Cornwallis Court is calculated as follows: ( (81 Excellents x 5) + (11 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 96 Ratings = 4.802

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.49 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cornwallis Court is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.69

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
