The care staff and management staff all have the priority of the residents as their first concern. Sometimes difficult issues come up but these, from what I have seen, are dealt with, with dignity and concern for the well-being of the resident. There was recently a 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party' held in
the nursing section and all staff dressed up and made it a great time for all that were there. Congratulations - well done.

Dad is reasonably happy here, is fed well and the staff know him by name. I feel he is left for very long periods in his room. It can be quite long periods without someone coming into the room.

We have been unhappy with the care of his personal belongings. In particular, his laundry. We have frequently

found items of clothing missing and have taken responsibility of washing woollens and we have had several shrunk with harsh laundry procedures.

Reply from Helen Mullins, Home Manager at Cornwallis Court

At the RMBI we provide person centred care to all our residents, supporting them to take part in activities if they wish to, whilst also respecting their privacy. Our Care Support Workers regularly visit residents’ rooms to ensure they are safe and their needs are being met. We are required to meet Health & Safety regulations regarding laundry, if you have any particular concerns, please speak to the Home Management Team to raise your concerns.

My mother is very happy at Cornwallis Court. The main concern is staff shortage. Sometimes Mother has to wait too long for her bell to be answered. This is due to the lack of staff numbers. Otherwise, the staff are kind and caring.

I have always found all staff, including maintenance, laundry, cleaning etc very helpful, kind and positive about my future here.
I have a broken back and the staff are aware of the pain this causes when they are helping me and are aware also of my determination to help myself if possible.
The food
served varies in choice but we have excellent chefs who do the best they can with whatever amount of cash they are given.
The activity organisers do their best, but again, there are very few opportunities for wheelchair users to get out in the coach we have.
I'm not sure they understand the need for all residents to get out of the building.
We desperately need more staff especially carers and this urgent.

Care home staff work really hard to ensure all residents needs are met and they are safe, well and happy. My mother requires full-time care as she has advanced dementia and cannot wash or dress. My father has multiple care issues and complex medication which the care home manages exceedingly well, liaising
with his GP and hospital. I would recommend this care home to other families.

Many would like to go out eg. town as there are no shops here. We are unable to have a carer, as they are needed here in the home. Often a trip is needed to go to the bank and personal shopping.

The staff and management are so professional in their care to the residents and also to the family of residents - keeping those that need to know informed of wellbeing/doctors visits etc. They are all so friendly to visitors including small children, so accommodating when my family visit my parents.

Since my father went in during December 2016, nearly at death's door, his health has improved as he is so well cared for. This home is the best run and managed that I have seen. Staff are well trained and retained, many having been there a long time. Staff are friendly, helpful, very kind and respectful
of the resident's dignity.
The food is home cooked, always a choice, special diets catered for and visitors welcome. The buildings are constantly being improved, currently with new double-glazing being installed. There is a visitors flat. Rooms are very warm for the elderly. My father with his poor circulation and heart condition doesn't need to wear his gloves any longer to keep his hands warm. Thank you to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution who run and support this home. There is also an excellent group of "The Friends" who loaned a TV and gave everyone a rose on Valentine's Day. I would be happy to be there myself if necessary.

One of the best decisions I have made in my life, to have my husband in Cornwallis Court. He is well cared for by very caring people.
Thank you so very much.
I know he is safe and secure and I believe he is quite content.

The family are very happy with the care my mother has received. The carers have tried very hard to assist with her integration into the home but we do appreciate the difficulties because of for lack of hearing. We are kept well informed if there is/has been a problem and are able to discuss the situation
openly with the carer in charge. We are fully aware that mum doesn't eat a great deal but are very pleased that she is encouraged to eat little and often.

My mother is treated with dignity, care, respect and dignity and a homely feel, good facilities and nice rooms. The staff have got to know my mum over the last year which is important as she has difficulty communicating now. They are all quite complex on this small unit only ten residents at different
levels of dementia. The food is good and if mum does not like something the staff find alternatives. There is always a choice. My mum is sae, well and cared for and happy.

I cared for my wife for some 7 years from 2008 and determined that I was suffering from vertigo worsening and not now really able to care for my wife who is now a resident of this care home with dementia in this secure unit. We both were booked in on 22nd January 2015. I was seen rather promptly by
the GP and retuned to hospital and determined after some 2 to 3 months that I had permanent resting and with a little blood flow to my head and needed stint in my neck but could not operate because of my age and health but would keep me medically fit. This they have done extremely well and I assist by injecting my wife's insulin as well as my own to spare district nurses having to come in.

After 3 accidents requiring visits to hospital the staff here could not in any way be faulted for the service given. The 3 accidents were entirely my fault (I fell down and it was a result of a clot on my leg). I am very happy here having been here for 4 years.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.472)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.472) out of 10 for Cornwallis Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.796 for Cornwallis Court is calculated as follows: ( (90 Excellents x 5) + (14 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 108 Ratings = 4.796

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.676 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cornwallis Court is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.776

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
