Kingfisher House Care Home is located is pretty gardens in a quiet area of Newmarket, yet within reach of shops, amenities and public transport.

The service provides residential care for people who need support with everyday activities such as washing, dressing or eating, as well as keeping on top of taking regular medications. In addition, the service offers specialist residential care for people who are living with dementia or a mental health condition.

Short-term respite care is also available to give family or friends a well-earned break and specialist intermediate nursing care is also offered as an alternative to a hospital stay.

Traditional home cooking using fresh produce is offered with choices being available. Special diets can be catered for.

A varied activities programme includes coffee mornings, bingo and performances by local entertainers to name a few. The home has strong links with the local community who are always welcome to join in with many of the events taking place.

I find the staff at Kingfisher House excellent with the care of my mum who has dementia. The effort two staff members in particular put in to include as many as possible in activities is unbelievable. Nothing but huge gratitude to them and the rest of the staff for doing so much to care for and occupy
my mum and the other residents.

The home has improved tremendously in the past few months. All staff try really hard to care for and support the residents. The activities provided are regular and varied and have made a big difference to my mum's well-being.
The whole building and the grounds need money spending on them as they are
looking tired and outdated.

The team have worked so hard to help mum get back out of bed following a hospital admission 2 months ago. Their sensitive care and contact attention means she is finally well enough to sit out of bed. We have been for a 'walk' in the garden, watched the birds and had dinner in the dining room. It's
a start and really cheered Mum up. Thank you.

Dad is thriving and well looked after since his arrival. All staff are polite and caring and Dad gets on well with them all.

Overall, we are pleased with how my husband is cared for.
I would just say that the bathroom in his room is looking tired and has a few age problems, which makes it hard for the cleaning staff to give the outcome that they would like, I am sure.

My mother-in-law has been in residential care for nearly 1 year. The staff are always friendly and helpful, taking time to talk to us and explain the care they are giving. My mother-in-law has dementia, but she feels safe and seems very content and happy.

Having arranged care for my father, I was concerned about how he would be when it came to his admission. However, the welcome he received was fantastic. The staff knew his name and made him feel really special. There was even a welcome card in his room. Once in, lovely checks were made and recorded.
The highly professional way that the home is run has been a huge relief to our family. We know he is taken well care of, is safe and treated extremely well. Thank you, team!

Food inedible at times (potatoes uncooked). Seems to be no permanent cook - therefore anybody including maintenance staff prepares food! The community lounge floor is filthy, you stick to the floor when you walk in. Because of language barriers with some of the foreign staff, they come across very rude
and brash. Staff are very reluctant to help with anything they deem not to be their job. When visiting you can wait an age for anyone to answer the door. A very poor and badly run establishment.

My mother is mostly content but does complain about her call button not being responded to, especially in the afternoons.
She does feel a shower/hair wash shouldn't have to be fought for.
Ma has lots of positive comments regarding the permanent carers, but the agency carers can be dreadful - not knowing
how to wash her, or with what - hair conditioner by one!
Ma does like to go to lunch now, but often doesn't as she hates to be plonked in the sitting room for hours afterwards!

Some of the care staff are very good and interact with the residents, but others make no effort whatsoever.
Booking appointments to visit or video call is extremely difficult as no one answers the phone. When visiting, getting staff to answer the door can often take in excess of 15 minutes. More activities
are needed and trips. Residents don't get much opportunity to get out.

A few days ago I gave the acting manager a list of the clothes I brought into the care home for my wife to wear. My wife had previously informed me that her clothes had disappeared and that she was now having to wear other people's clothes.
This morning I rang Kingfisher at 9:30 am. Eventually, after
making at least 6 calls I eventually spoke to someone in the managers' office. I told them I wished to make an appointment to see my wife on Sunday having been informed that lockdown finished on Friday. I was informed that lockdown is still in force. This care home is an utter shambles!
My wife suffers from dementia but is able to communicate with me satisfactorily.

My husband is cared for excellently. He is treated with dignity at all times. All carers in both Spiller down and Spiller up are all very caring. My husband has been in Spiller unit for 18 months.

My mother looks very well, clean, and mostly happy with her lot.
Ma does complain (not in her character) about some of the carers being abrupt and not very friendly. Sunday night mother wanted to go to the loo, the carer refused to take her saying to use the "pad" but bound her so tightly, laughed
and said you won't be able to do a pee nor number 2, Ma was so uncomfortable and upset. The call button is often not given to her, very wrong. Call buttons can go unanswered for an hour plus.

Alastair Rayner

Job Title: Home Manager at Kingfisher House Care Home, Newmarket

Joined: 2022

Alastair has a wealth of knowledge and experience with an NVQ3 and an NVQ5 in Leadership and Adult Social Care. He began his career as a care assistant at a nursing home before becoming a team leader at a brain injury rehabilitation centre. Following this, he managed various different health facilities before coming to Kingfisher House. Alastair is particularly proud of achieving an ‘Outstanding’ CQC rating whilst he was the registered manager of a care home in Bury. Outside of work, Alastair loves to fundraise for charity. He previously raised over £60,000 for the charity ‘Dogs for Good’ by trekking around the world, including climbing to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. He also enjoys golf and gardening.
