A care home like no other with the emphasis on home!
My aunt has resided at Urmston House for just over eight years. The level of care and compassion whilst respecting her dignity is second to none.
Always met with a warm welcome.
The care provided for my aunt and other residents is person-centred
with their best interests at the heart of everything.
Communication is great and there are no restrictions on visiting hours which has always been reassuring. It’s lovely to have regular meetings and be invited to events to catch up with other families.
My aunt is respectfully supported with personal care, to make decisions and in lots of activities within the home and community.
The communal area is lovely and bright with a homely and welcoming feel. This is where my aunt likes to spend a lot of her time. Her room has been decorated to her tastes and is kept clean and tidy as with the rest of the home.
Lots of healthy food that always looks and smells great!
I can't thank the whole team enough for everything they do!

Absolutely outstanding, such a happy place to be under Urmston House care. I go often unannounced always clean, tidy and all residents seem very content. Cannot fault Urmston House at all. Just wish other care homes would take note, all the regular staff, you are a credit to our family.

My uncle has been at Urmston House for more than 10 years. As the care home is specifically built for the needs of disabled people, it caterers for him very well whilst still feeling like a home. The main assets are however, the staff and the way its run. I found the care he is given to be excellent.
When my uncle's needs changed due to medical issues, new accommodations and equipment were put in place in order for him to stay at the home and be as comfortable as possible.

My brother has lived at Urmston House since it opened in 2000 and arrived there with others who had lived at another specialist care facility that was closing down. Urmston House was designed specifically for the disability needs of its residents and my brother settled quickly and thrived in his new
environment. His skills, confidence and independence grew and have continued to develop over the years.
I have always been impressed by the care given to my brother and the way that I am involved with decision making and I am kept informed of any problems or difficulties he has. The management and staffing of Urmston are now exemplary and I cannot thank the staff enough for their kindness and care which extends to genuine concern. A culture of person-centred rather than task centred care underpins and ensures this approach.

My son has been at Urmston House I think since it has opened (18/19 years) and has been very happy with the staff/activities/food and his room, which is always clean and tidy and smell lovely and fresh when visiting.
It is very difficult at the moment because of the virus, my son always greats me with
a cuddle but hasn't been able. I have phone calls once or twice a week and I can speak to him, I also have lovely photos which the staff take on their phone and send them to me. Before the lockdown, I could go and see him anytime even at night if I myself couldn't sleep but I never went that far as I am disabled and don't drive anymore.
I can remember when my son caught his thumb in his bedroom door and the manager rang me and a new door was fitted the next day with the security springs, he is blind and any bruises on him Urmston House would ring me to let me know how or when it happened.
The staff are very caring and patient with my son and I have no problem with any of them.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.250)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.250) out of 10 for Urmston House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 5.000 for Urmston House is calculated as follows: ( (35 Excellents x 5) ) ÷ 35 Ratings = 5

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.25 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Urmston House is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 6 registered maximum number of service users is 1.2, which has been reached with 3 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Service Manager

I have been in post here since December 2019. Previous to this position I worked at Woodhouse in Southmead as a Deputy for 1 year prior to this.

I have worked within the Learning Disability sector for a long time and have found this is my niche.

Urmston house is a lovely 6 bed residential, and I have lots of experience here. I first started my career in 2016. I was employed on the Bank team as a support worker. Within 6 months I became a bank team leader and finally becoming a contracted Team Leader within a year. I was also nominated for an inspirational leader award in the Star awards, I made it to the national finals too!

I worked at Urmston for 3 years, when I left the company to pursue a managerial role elsewhere. That employment was not me and I returned to Shaw Healthcare after 6 months away!

Supporting the team here at Urmston means a great deal to me, working with the families and everyone is fab! Our service users are living their very best lives and knowing I have the experience of working with them for a few years now I hopefully have the knowledge and can offer guidance to my team.

Shaw have provided me with great support and I would not have been able to manage the home that I loved working in without their encouragement and recognition.

I Started working here in February of 2019 as a support worker, having never worked in care before I had a lot to learn but I enjoyed every minute of it and was supported really well by the Shaw Team.

I have always been in two minds about working in the care sector even though my family and friends thought I would be amazing at it. I have to say they were right. In my first year working here I was nominated for being an inspirational individual as a support worker at the star awards, which are awards held annually by the company to uplift and reward staff. Shortly after a role came up for a Team Leader which my peers encouraged me to go for again I was nervous to take on the extra responsibility but I have had all the support and training that I have needed to help me progress.
As a team Leader I find my role challenging but fulfilling, I love being involved in finding ways to enhance our service users lives and being able to actively be a part of that change.

I love working for Shaw and working with such a brilliant team who are constantly looking for ways to enhance our service users lives. When I leave the home at the end of a working day I feel blessed to work with such amazing people who challenge my mind everyway.
