I have been a resident at Abbots Leigh nursing home on three separate occasions for periods of six months or more receiving respite care.
Prior to Abbots Leigh, I spent time in two other care homes nearby and neither were able to offer the quality of care and attention that I now receive.
The food
is fresh and plentiful with choices at every meal. I enjoy a full English breakfast, cooked lunch and homemade soups in the evening.
I feel very fortunate to have found this nursing home and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

This review is well overdue so thought it was time to put pen to paper so to speak.
My Dear Mother spent over 18 months at Abbots Leigh Manor until her passing last September, she had been very happy during her stay and had a wonderful room overlooking the garden and green fields beyond (always trying
to spot the occasional deer in the long grasses). She thoroughly enjoyed the food especially the roast lunches on a Wednesday and Sunday, she was regularly asked if she had any particular favourites not listed on the everyday extensive menu and if she had the chef would kindly oblige. She loved the beautiful well stocked gardens and loved to take part in the Wednesday garden club which is extremely popular with the residents.
During the end of Mum's life, the dignity, respect and care shown by the staff was exceptional and a great comfort to me during that very difficult time.

Glad Mum is cared for here. The room is homely and cosy. She's not demanding but feels a little more attention would do no harm considering she pays the same amount as residents who are completely dependable on carers. She's left to her own devices a lot of the time and moans to her offspring which
we can't do anything about. We do our best to make her feel happy but the food is the main issue. It's bland and simple so she looks forward to us taking her home-cooked meals. We aren't a family to judge but for the money to stay here things could be improved.

Thank you for leaving a review. We are pleased to hear that you are glad your mother is cared for at Abbots Leigh Manor but we are disappointed to hear that she 'moans' to you because she tells us that she's happy to be with us. Your mother joins in with our activities most days but if she decides to stay in her room we must respect her wish to do so but we encourage her to attend activities whenever she's in the mood. Our cook has regular conversations with your mother about her food likes and dislikes and your mother tells us that she's happy with the meals she receives but we will continue to engage with her about her food choices. We give your mother small portions because that's what she requests.

Our father was admitted from hospital for end-of-life care. Dad's room was large, airy, bright, and beautifully decorated with wonderful views of fields.
He was cared for by the very best carers one can find. Kind caring respectful and diligent.
Dad passed in the most dignified and respectful way.
As a family, we thank all the staff for first-class, exceptional care. Thank you.

My mother moved into Abbots Leigh Manor Nursing Home in January 2022 and was there until her death in September 2023. I never thought she would settle into a care home, having lived independently until the age of 92, but she very quickly grew to love life at Abbots Leigh and once told me: "It's the
best place I've ever lived". The staff are unfailingly kind to both residents and families. The medical care is excellent. When Mum died, the staff reacted as if there had been a death in the family, which was immensely touching. The rooms are beautiful and there are good views from all of them - either of fields or of the Bristol Channel.
A meeting was recently held in which residents were given a chance to vent any criticisms. No one could find anything bad to say and instead made a vote of thanks to the manager, followed by a round of applause. That said it all.

My mother went into Abbots Leigh Manor Nursing Home in September 2017 and lived there until her recent death. She remained mentally alert but had restricted mobility and stage 4 Kidney Disease.
The facilities are excellent and throughout her time at Abbots Leigh, my mother experienced the highest
quality of care. We were impressed by the effective way that the nursing staff worked with local GPs in needs and provided a caring, supportive environment that she appreciated and valued. Abbots Leigh also benefits from an active community life providing a stimulating environment. In her last days, we were impressed by the compassion she received with individual carers remaining at her bedside. Abbots Leigh helped us greatly with the practical and emotional difficulties of the period leading to her death. We would have no hesitation in recommending Abbots Leigh to anyone seeking a nursing home for an elderly relative.

Abbots Leigh Manor is a beautiful house in a wonderful setting but what really sets it apart is its staff and the caring, compassionate community they have created. Our dad moved into Abbots Leigh Manor in March 2018 after a rapid deterioration in his health due to a life-limiting lung condition. Although
his mind was sharp, he struggled with physical tasks and low mood. Every time we visited, we found the staff to be patient, calm, friendly and entirely focussed on his needs. Sadly, Dad passed away in October 2018. Over the 5 days and nights we stayed at his bedside, every member of staff, from the manager to the carers, supported and advised us so that his passing was as positive as it could be and we could do our very best for him as he went. We cannot recommend this nursing home highly enough.

My husband spent his last 5 months in this lovely home. I cannot fault the care he received in any way: in the time he was there I never came across a member of staff that wasn't friendly and sympathetic, right down to the domestic staff, they were all marvellous and could not do enough to be helpful.
He had great continuity of care at a personal level and did not have to deal with a constant stream of new faces.
The home is comfortable and in beautiful surroundings and we enjoyed the gardens in the summer.
I know he felt secure and happy in his very pleasant surroundings with such a great team looking after him.

My mother has been in Abbots Leigh for 2 1/2 years. During this time I have never seen anything but a caring attitude from all members of staff. People who go out of their way to meet my mother's requests. The management and reception staff are both informative and very supportive to relatives of residents.
Now my mother needs nursing care it certainly puts my mind at rest if I go away, knowing she is being cared for at Abbots Leigh.

Abbots Leigh Manor is a very pleasant place - a spacious old house in extensive grounds and with attractive views from windows. Residents are offered a range of leisure activities. A quiz is put on every day and it is the highlight of my mother’s day. But what really makes this home so good is the atmosphere
and the staff. It’s a relaxed sort of place. Residents are helped to live as they wish to, rather than being forced to follow other people’s plans: they are made to feel at home. As ever, a small group of key people set the tone and are a credit to the home. But all of the staff seem to me to be considerate and caring. My mother says that she has had nothing but kindness from her carers. That’s been my experience too. I know that if my mother falls ill or has an accident she will be looked after professionally and properly but without unnecessary fuss.

We visited eight dementia care homes in September 2017 in the Portishead/Nailsea/ Clevedon area and Abbots Leigh was the best: clean, tidy, no smells, organised activities and a good meal menu.
Our initial assessment was correct: the staff were not just caring but pleasantly attentive and loving to
my wife who was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia.
My wife was pleased with the meals. Her room was cleaned regularly and kept tidy. Her decreasingly few trips around the well-kept garden were much appreciated in a wheelchair provided by the home. Visitors were welcome and there was a comfortable chair for their use in her room. They could if they wished to join in the afternoon activities and welcomed us at festive times and other special event times.
Except in a few emergencies, medicine times were strictly adhered to.
The Manor together with its gardens has a quiet relaxing atmosphere which is
enhanced by the quality of staff and management - all to the benefits of the residents.

I cannot imagine a better care home for my mother. The staff are exemplary in their efforts to keep Mum happy and content. The home itself is beautifully kept and the grounds are pure heaven! I've observed the staff with other patients on my way in and out and the kindness shown to all residents is
heartwarming. Nothing is too much trouble. The Care Home Manager goes above and beyond at all times to make sure everything is dealt with immediately. Again, nothing is too small or insignificant for her to deal with, despite being a very busy person.
Mum loves it here and she is not easily pleased! We love it too. I'd happily live there myself one day if the need should arise.

My mother has resided here for some years. During that period, the most striking feature of this nursing home is the consistency of the warm, caring and empathic approach of all the staff who we have encountered. There has been a turnover of staff caring for my mother but the thoughtfulness and professionalism
of all those members of staff has been truly wonderful. My mother and all our family are so grateful for this level of care.

There is a busy programme of varied activities that is provided for residents every day. The environment is attractive, clean and well maintained although the building is old and not originally designed as a nursing home. The food provided is of high quality.

It is a huge reassurance for all the family to have my mother in such a lovely place.

I am really grateful to Abbots Leigh Manor for taking such good care of my mother while she was there. Every member of staff was unfailingly kind to her and their cheerful presence and reassurance made a big difference to her and to the whole family at a very difficult time. The atmosphere at the nursing
home is really friendly and in all my visits there I never passed a member of staff (whether involved in management, caring, nursing, cleaning or housekeeping) without receiving a smile or greeting. It's also a comfortable, clean and very attractive environment - the Christmas decorations were amazing - and there are interesting activities on offer for residents every day. I would recommend the nursing home without hesitation to anyone exploring the option of residential nursing care for themselves or a family member.

Current Review Score: 8.4 (8.411)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.4 (8.411) out of 10 for Abbots Leigh Manor Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.7 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.746 for Abbots Leigh Manor Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (50 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.746

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.665 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abbots Leigh Manor Nursing Home is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 69 registered maximum number of service users is 13.8. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 13.8 = 0.29

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
