The Check House is an "Outstanding" (CQC) Care and Nursing home who specialise in dementia. The culture of the home is open, friendly, warm, welcoming, organised and safe.
The manager and all staff are kind and compassionate towards everyone and have warm, caring relationships with them.
The care
provided is personalised by staff who are highly skilled, know the patients well, their lives, what matters to them and care for them as individuals.
Meals are of superb quality and superior to those one would find in many expensive restaurants and hotels.
The Check House has a variety of social activities and encourage personal interests.
Even though many residents are cognitively impaired, they are supported to express their views and make their own decisions about all aspects of their life and what is important to them.
As a relative who lives quite a distance away, all these factors and more besides I know my father is safe, well cared for, and content within this living environment.

Alzheimer's had already set in when my Aunt moved to The Check House, almost seven years ago. She had a beautiful room with glorious views over the gardens to the sea beyond. She was cared for incredibly well throughout her stay. Her progressive decline meant she needed more and more care which was
always given with dignity and a smile. She died a week ago, with her last days being peaceful and calm as she gently slipped away. This has been an amazing experience for us of care for the elderly.

A week's respite here after knee surgery. It could not have been better: nice room, lovely staff, all the assistance I needed. The food was outstanding for mass catering (lovely homemade soup!). I cannot fault it - expensive but worth every penny!

So very grateful that my Dad was able to spend his last months in such a caring, wonderful place. I consider I was extremely lucky in that my Dad was a resident at The Check House. A beautiful building with wonderful views but it is so much more than that. It is like a family, all the staff, and I mean
all, are so lovely and go beyond what is expected. My Dad was a Chelsea fan, and a member of staff took it on himself to print him a weekly update on how Chelsea were doing which was kept in a folder in his room, despite said staff member being a Tottenham fan! The food is excellent and it was such a shame my Dad couldn't take full advantage but he was always accommodated with whatever he wanted, even if that was usually an omelette. The management team are so approachable and really make an effort to get to know the residents and always there for the families. A truly exceptional home, made completely perfect by the dedicated and caring family of staff. Thank you Check House!

My mother spent the last two years of her life at Check House and we are deeply grateful to all the intelligent, hard-working staff for treating her with such kindness, affection and respect. Everyone was lovely and considerate and kept us well-informed. The home itself is charming and characterful
with fine views of the sea, which Mum always loved. So much thought and consideration had clearly gone into the activities, decor, food and arrangements. We are so glad we found Check House and I doubt our mother could have found as much contentment anywhere else.

The staff (all) were extremely kind to my father - indeed all the residents I met when visiting. In addition, they made me very welcome. It is a very happy place despite the many problems dementia brings.

The Check House is very well run and an inviting place to visit. I, with my son and daughter, visited nine care homes in the area where I live before deciding The Check House was best suited to provide the care and environment my wife needed. We have never regretted our decision. The staff are professional
and friendly and I know my wife is safe and well looked after at all times.
I am kept informed of any matters that affect my wife and I am able to discuss her care plan with her lead nurse at any time.
I have been visiting my wife for over three and a half years and I look upon The Check House as my second home.

Very pleased with the care my Mum receives. The staff go out of their way to make sure she is happy and well looked after. They also answer any questions I have about her welfare and will always find out the answers if they don't know themselves.

To know Mum is happy and has her needs fulfilled

means so much and gives me peace of mind.

Very good home with a nice "buzz" about the atmosphere whenever visiting. My wife, with advanced Alzheimer's, is very well cared for by the friendly and compassionate staff and management. Food is excellent with a genuine choice for all meals, and the rooms are always clean and well furnished. Residents
have many activities and trips arranged for them and the monthly newsletter keeps residents and family visitors well informed about planned activities. When visiting nothing is too much trouble for the staff and a warm welcome makes so much difference. Training for staff and for family members where appropriate is well catered for. All in all an excellent home with wonderful standards of care.

My father was resident for 8 months as despite being fully compos mentis he was a very frail 96 years old.
He was treated with great kindness and dignity throughout his time there. The managers were always hands on in care and very approachable. As a daily visitor, I was made very welcome by all staff.
My father died there in a very peaceful and caring atmosphere with wonderful care from all the staff.

Someone is always on hand if anything to discuss and office always open, with managers very approachable. The home is very light, airy and often soft music playing. Dining facilities include visitors to join residents with an excellent menu and food.
A happy atmosphere with plenty of activities, residents
are able to move around freely with plenty of quiet areas away from others, for visitors to take residents somewhere private if needed.
All residents are dressed cleanly and never left in soiled clothing and well cleaned rooms with friendly staff.
A home is only as good as the staff they employ.

It's always a pleasure to visit my aunt at The Check House. The manager and her team are all friendly, welcoming and professional. As I live almost 200 miles away it's very important to feel reassured that my aunt is safe, secure and receiving the best care and this is the case with The Check House.
I would highly recommend this nursing home and their facilities and activity schedules are excellent.

Our friend has settled perfectly into the home. They are always impeccably dressed, look, and are scrupulously clean, this is important as they always took one hundred percent pride in their personal appearance. They are driven out, both on outings organised by the head of activities and on "local"
pickups and drop offs by fully trained, competent and qualified staff. They are eating and drinking very well but not so excessively that their weight is not stabilised. They are encouraged to be physically active and always look bright, happy and alert whenever we visit.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.257)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.257) out of 10 for The Check House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.964 for The Check House is calculated as follows: ( (81 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 84 Ratings = 4.964

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.293 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Check House is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.8 = 0.593

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
