On arriving at Hatherleigh Nursing Home in July my husband was welcomed by two members of staff who took great care to make him feel welcome and part of the family.
After settling into a lovely ensuite bedroom he was taken to the lounge to meet other residents.
It was a heart-wrenching thing for me
to do to leave him.
I need not have worried, the staff are very attentive to his needs, very respectful and always cheerful and encouraging, making time to sit down and have a chat anytime.
I know he is happy and well looked after. Thank you.

1. No motivation for residents.
2. Staff have not got time to talk to residents.
3. Food hygiene and safeguarding of residents around the food trolley. Worry.
4. No compassion for relatives.
5. My partner was allowed to sit in very wet pads after repeating to ask for help to the toilet this resulted
in urine burns on his bottom and privates.

When I had to put my wife into a home I was not sure it was the right thing to do at this time. But a lady from the Hatherleigh Nursing Home visited me and reassured me how good it was. I decided to give it a go. For my wife, it is the best thing I could have done for her. She is happy and content in
her little world. For me, it's hard to enjoy life now without her by my side. But I know she is looked after very well. The staff are her and my adopted family.

A wonderful caring and loving home. Dignity is maintained at all times for the residents. We were very lucky to find a place for our Father.

I find this difficult to leave Dad in a home but unfortunately, a facility where multiple staff can watch patients is a care home. I am pleased that the alarms are not on constantly these days.
Care and support is probably the hardest thing for us to monitor, odd times when some patients speak to
the staff and are ignored.
Food and drink is a difficult subject as the patients don't need 1000's of calories. Value for money is my biggest heartache of seeing so much money poured down the drain. I know we don't expect five-star eating, sleeping facilities but happy staff and patients are a must.

My aunt spent the last two and a half years of her life in Hatherleigh Nursing Home. From the moment she arrived, until her peaceful death at ninety eight, she was treated with kindness, excellent nursing and good humour.
At Hatherleigh, she found herself in an environment where she could relax, be
herself and enjoy being cared for after a lifetime of caring for others. She had always been very independent, though found it increasingly hard to cope once she was in her nineties. The thought of going into care worried her, but the relief she felt when she realised that she was ‘at home’ and not ‘in a Home’ was overwhelming.
She loved having people around and her final years were happy - thank you for that to everyone at Hatherleigh.

Having no recent comparative, experience of care homes I have used 'neutral' choices. This review was completed prior to recent re-organisation, but held pending its completion, and has now been amended to reflect current opinions. The 'poor' mark for management reflects a continuing problem with the
relay and/or recording of information within the home, which I have personal experience of. Plus the manner and timing of head office communications to the resident's Son which has caused him repeated trouble. I find the care and nursing staff standards good, but am aware that the numbers may not always be adequate. Regarding 'value for money' I have opted for satisfactory as I have no comparative data so wish to be neutral on this.

I have been pleased with the way the home has made the client welcomed into this new situation. He has settled in well to the friendly situation. He likes some of the food better than others. A few of the activities he is beginning to get involved with. I'm impressed how the staff speak to him by name.
He is not the easiest of character but has been quite happy when I visit him and he has no complaints.

I have found the staff extremely helpful and genuinely caring. I have peace of mind that my mother is receiving the best possible care and that all is being done that can be to keep her comfortable and happy.
The building is a fantastic complex and is kept in a lovely clean condition and the atmosphere
is very happy and relaxed.

Mother has always lived quite isolated on a farm so moving into a home and feeling unwell was a big step for her. The staff are very understanding, caring and respect her wishes to stay in her room and have her own T.V and radio.
They have developed a good routine for her which makes her feel safe
and secure.
The staff have been very considerate and caring to me as it was difficult to let mother go after caring for her for five and a half years, but I know she is well cared for. It is great to have such a great home near my home so I can visit most days and spend quality time with her. Thank you. I would recommend Hatherleigh Nursing Home to anyone.

Current Review Score: 6.7 (6.694)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 6.7 (6.694) out of 10 for Hatherleigh Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.6 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.1 out of 5 from 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.600 for Hatherleigh Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (12 Excellents x 5) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 20 Ratings = 3.6

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.094 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hatherleigh Nursing Home is based on 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 = 3

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 53 registered maximum number of service users is 10.6. 1 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.6 = 0.094

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
