The front door is not locked people can just walk in unchallenged and residents can walk out. No enforcement of signing in. The carpets throughout are very dirty. Unsafe flooring (chipboard). Flammable materials stored in corridors contravening the fire regulations. Not been showered for four days.
By lunchtime had been left in a pyjama top. The room is in poor repair just a bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling. In for six days and had no feedback on how settling in as a new resident. Handrail on stairs only on one side. Bed wheels not locked plus more!

Reply from Michelle Theresa Wray, Care Director at Ermington House

Thank you for your review, at the time of this admission the home was undergoing a full refurbishment, this is now complete. All doors are activated via a keypad and all works are completed. We tirelessly work to ensure resident care and safety, and all feedback is welcome so we can continually improve our service. This complaint was fully investigated by CQC and QAIT and no action was required.

My brother is a resident at Ermington House, he suffers from Bipolar and Alzheimers. I would like to say how incredible all the staff have been with regards to his care and wellbeing.
He was a recluse, very depressed, lost a lot of confidence, and overweight since arriving at the care home six weeks
ago; he has made new friends, feels confident enough to join in with all the activities, he is a healthy weight now due to the yummy food and actually enjoys meeting his new friends for meals. He hasn't had one day of feeling depressed.
This speaks volumes to me and my family - the staff have been so kind, caring and incredibly attentive, and due to this, his overall health has markedly and clearly improved.
I couldn't recommend them more highly.
Thank you.

My mum had two stays at the home in 2020, the second being the last 10 weeks of her life. The staff were wonderful, caring and compassionate, not just to mum but they always found time to talk to me at a difficult time, and it was a comfort to know they were with mum at the end. I wish mum had been
able and well enough to join in with the wonderful activities that the staff are always organising, which I've enjoyed seeing on their dedicated Facebook page.

I cannot thank the staff at Ermington House enough, for the wonderful care that they gave to my Aunt, for the 18 months she was with them. She was always carefully looked after, given dignity, warmth, and well-balanced home-cooked meals were served daily.

My dad was admitted for palliative care in September 2020 with a terminal condition and early-stage Alzheimer's dementia. While he was there my dad mentioned to me how fantastic the staff were to him and his needs. They made him feel at home and made his stay as comfortable as possible. Dad said the
staff were always bright and cheerful.
Whenever I phoned the home I was always given the latest update on Dad's condition and was able to speak to him on the phone (if his mobile wasn't charged). We were made aware of each step as it would happen and help and support was there if needed. The staff showed compassion, caring, and professionalism which helped immensely when the inevitable came. I did visit on a number of occasions and because of the pandemic we had a separate door from the outside into Dad's room, so no contact with any residents. We were given PPE for each visit.
I (and my family) would just like to say a huge thank you to the staff for taking such good care of my dad.

Excellent care and meals. Would have liked more hot drinks frequently, that's the only negative. The staff are wonderful, especially under present circumstances.

Our mother moved to Ermington House (then known as Kingsacre) in April 2006 suffering from relatively low-level dementia. She is, I believe, the resident who has been there longest. During this period her dementia has increased and, as you would expect, her general health has deteriorated. Now aged
nearly 97 she spends much of her time in bed and she is very frail. None of her immediate family live within 130 miles of the home so during the current lockdown we have had to rely heavily on updates from the home. We receive regular general updates on life in the home and, by request, we have received some lovely personal updates on her wellbeing from her personal carer, all of which are really appreciated. The home are now offering phone conversations and pre-booked visits to wave through the window. Neither of these are appropriate for our situation but reflects the care and attention the residents receive. Mum has always been very happy in the home. We appreciate all they do for her.

My mother moved into Ermington House in December 2019 and has now settled in well. She is in a bright room, which is kept clean by the team. At times she can be demanding but the carers tend to her needs with professionalism and care.
Prior to the Covid-19 lockdown, daily activities were arranged
with people from outside the home, this ceased to be possible once lockdown was imposed. However, activities continue to be held with the help of the staff, despite having to carry out their other duties, showing their dedication and care for the residents.
It has been difficult over the past three months not being able to see her, but the staff have always been helpful when I have telephoned and tried, where possible, to enable me to speak to her.
I have appreciated receiving the weekly updates during the current situation and it has been reassuring to learn that the home is and remains free of the virus. It has given me great peace of mind knowing that she is being kept safe and well.

My mother has been in Ermington House for the last four or five months, and she has been well cared for and looked after by the staff who are friendly and I believe fun. Unfortunately, the timing could have been better due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has seriously impacted the things that can be
done in the home, but the care given over this time has been exemplary.
In the last week it has been necessary to have my father put into care, and not only did the home bend over backwards to get him in with them and once that was done they made sure that both he and my mum could be in the same room together. Above and beyond the call of duty.

Dad has been in Ermington House for almost three years and he has been looked after so well that even in these challenging times we know he’s happy there. We arranged to see him today for the first time since February and even though it was through a window it was so reassuring to see him so well. All
the staff are so helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. We would definitely recommend Ermington House for anyone needing care for a loved one. With all the press commenting on care homes with the virus we know that Ermington House is keeping everyone safe and we are truly grateful. Being kept informed by email from the management is another great way of keeping us updated.

Very, very happy with Mums care. Missing seeing her but Ermington House have managed to keep everyone safe and well during this awful pandemic. Severe dementia is very hard to cope with but staff seem to have patience and understanding.

I would like to say what a lovely, friendly home this is and the staff are so caring and professional. Dad settled in really well in January, but of late hasn't been too well. It's particularly hard at the moment not being able to visit him due to the lockdown, but I know he's being well looked after,
and I am being kept informed of his progress.
I would not hesitate to recommend this home.

I would just like to say how pleased we have been with the way the staff at Ermington House has responded to this dreadful Virus, it seems to us that as far as every day running of the home has remained at the usual high standard with little or no changes made to the residents apart from the fact that
they are not getting any visitors which in the circumstance is entirely the right thing to do.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Ermington House for long term or respite care. The care is exceptional and the management and staff are all very helpful, caring and compassionate. I cannot fault the care given to Mum. Mum has been here over 3 years and settled in very quickly. The facilities
are excellent after a major refurbishment last year. The rooms and communal areas are all comfortable and tastefully decorated. The meals served are excellent and the activities provided are good. Mum particularly enjoyed the bingo and card games. Visitors are welcomed at all times.

I cannot recommend Ermington House enough. The staff and management there should be commended for the way they look after the residents at all times, but even more so in the extremely difficult situation we find ourselves in at present. Speaking from experience and having a very demanding mother, their
support is so so so very much appreciated.

When my mother was a resident here between September and November 2019, the care she received was second to none. Each and every member of staff gave 100% love, care and attention to my mum. The support we all received as a family was wonderful and definitely helped us in this sad time.

Staff appeared happy and helpful.
It was obvious they cared about the residents.
The resident's room was clean, warm and we felt comfortable.
The team were keen to facilitate family members' visits and knew my relative very well.
However, the home and environment in most areas are in need of renovation.
Lots of equipment clutter.
The gardens and parking are in need of renovation.
The staff all need a uniform and name badges - unable to distinguish staff.
A huge ongoing project and we hope this review will help.

Our 99-year-old father was admitted to Kingsacre five weeks ago when a single carer was no longer sufficient to look after him in his own home.

From his arrival, the staff were polite, efficient, reassuring, very friendly and considerate of his wishes, ready to do all that was necessary, while respecting

his dignity and his frequent calls for attention.

His situation rapidly deteriorated, continuing the process that had already started before he left home. In the last few days, members of the family were with him 24 hours per day, helped enormously by a member of the staff seconded to help out during the last two nights. It is impossible to imagine anyone more sympathetic and caring than this person. The professional nursing staff were extremely attentive to his changing condition and did what they could, in consultation with the doctor, to relieve him of pain and make his departure as easy for him and the family as possible.

My sister has learning disabilities and to be unable to go home after a broken ankle was distressing for her; the loving nature of staff easily dispelled her anxieties. I visited her daily and was made equally as welcome. I was pleased that there were many members of staff at all times, all of the staff
were polite, helpful and approachable if I had a question (i.e. about a hospital visit or involving social services). All staff members appeared very professional and knowledgeable in their nursing field. My sister's bespoke needs mean that she likes to feel comfort from others and all the staff recognised when she needed affection and would hold her hand to give her the security she needed to which we are hugely grateful. She has many food allergies and these were easily catered for by the kitchen staff. All residents had a good selection for each meal. The meals are of an ideal/healthy portion size and clearly, meet your daily nutrient needs.

Current Review Score: 6.6 (6.605)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 6.6 (6.605) out of 10 for Ermington House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.5 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.1 out of 5 from 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.458 for Ermington House is calculated as follows: ( (11 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) + (12 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 24 Ratings = 3.458

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.147 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ermington House is based on 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 = 3

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8. 1 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.8 = 0.147

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
