Palm Court is a modern, purpose built nursing home in a seaside location, offering residents wonderful sea views and situated just meters from the beach. Equipment within the home is of the highest standard. Over 90% of beds are profiling and residents can choose from a range of mattresses to suit their needs. New hoists, new shower chairs and large ‘wet’ rooms ensure that residents have the best care experience possible.

Palm Court is a family run home-from-home, where individual needs and lifestyles of residents are supported. Management and staff are a very settled team, who are experts in caring for people with a range of needs, from dementia to complex nursing conditions.

Staff try to form close relationships with residents, who each have a designated carer to get to know them personally and to help them stay as connected to relatives, friends and the wider community as possible. The home offers a range of activities, from animals coming in, to singing and dancing, etc. They welcome different ideas and always offer activities which are person centred.

This is an amazing place. I cannot put into words how grateful I am to them for the way they have treated my mum and myself in the last two months of her life. She has been treated as a queen, and as her only relative, so have I.
The staff are beyond praise, some of them I'm sure are absolute saints
here on earth.

Sadly I must now voice my concern about this Nursing home, not because of the staff but because of some sort of management changes starting around August this year. The home has dedicated staff and the food is very good but there is not a good ratio of staff to residents. There are a large number of
residents needing double handed care because of mobility problems and even more needing one to one assistance at mealtimes. This results in call bells not speedily answered during these times and residents having to wait longer for assistance in toileting or personal care.
Two part time activities staff have been made redundant and not replaced and the lead nurse has left and not yet been replaced. The one activities organiser has had to be utilised in a care capacity on a number of occasions, leaving the residents with less quality of life.
I feel sorry for the staff whose personal job satisfaction must be at an all time low, even though they try to keep residents as happy as possible.

Our Mum spent the final 14 months of her battle with Dementia at Palm Court Nursing Home having been asked to leave a nursing home in Newton Abbot who were unable to offer her a reasonable level of care due to her condition. Despite some initial trepidation having read the previous reviews, we have
nothing but praise for Palm Court - the staff cared for Mum fantastically as she declined, showing empathy, care and compassion throughout, which is what we value. Nothing was too much trouble, and we always felt assured Mum was being well looked after. The app on our phones also kept us up to date with Mum's day and her activities. The facilities although not plush are totally functional and suitable for the nature of the residents. Throughout Mum's stay we were able to make regular visits, despite the Covid restrictions, and were always very welcome. We would like to thank Palm Court for all their care and from our experience would recommend it.

We were delighted to be given a chance to visit during the lockdown and were given Covid tests at the start of each visit. Everywhere felt Covid-secure and the staff were all good at following the rules in place and explaining it to us. My brother appeared very comfortable and said that he liked it
at Palm Court. He is relaxed and well looked after. Staff were friendly and make the effort to engage with him by singing and dancing to his music. Nice atmosphere.

My husband was a resident of Palm Court for the last month of his life. He had lived with Alzheimer's disease for several years prior to moving into Palm Court. During his stay, all staff were wonderful without exception. They were all kind and caring. I could not have wished for better care. The staff
were also a great support to myself and my family.

For the three and a half years my husband's care and needs were met. Any issues I had were dealt with promptly. They were very kind and considerate to me, nothing was too much trouble. The food was very good, and food allergies were taken care of, and also whatever the residents wanted. There was no
hesitation from the nursing staff to inform the doctor if my husband was poorly; he never suffered in any way.

The staff at Palm Court are kind, caring, trustworthy and extremely compassionate to residents and relatives. My 92-year-old dad was admitted at the end of life stage with kidney failure. He was immediately made to feel at home and welcome. All of his medical needs were attended to by an extremely professional
nursing team who kept him comfortable and pain-free. His remaining care was down to a team of wonderful people who catered to his every whim every day with a smile and in a kind, caring, understanding way; who could ask for more.

My father was admitted with advanced dementia in May 2018, it was a hard decision as he was a gardener and loved being outside, however, it became apparent that a simpler lifestyle made him happier. He was provided with a lovely, bright room with a toilet so he could still be independent. He interacted
with the staff and I could see he was settled and happier than he had been for a long time. I always went to see Dad unannounced and found him clean and well presented, he always enjoyed the food which was excellent. As Dad's dementia got worse the staff were attentive and caring, I knew Dad was comfortable and safe with them, they knew his ways and were able to cope with his confusion. As Dad got worse they kept us informed of any changes in medication and behaviour and always had time discuss what they were intending to do. Dad passed away last week, I am so grateful to the staff that were so caring for him and us as a family, I would not hesitate to recommend this home and the excellent staff.

I cannot visit as often as I would like due to the distance to travel but she is well settled. Has been in other homes. The staff call me to report if there are any problems with her health. Treatment is quickly dealt with. They have got to know her likes and dislikes very quickly. She always looks
clean, tidy and comfortable. She had leg ulcers when she went in but they are now gone, which is s=why I am so confident of the excellent care. All the staff are cheerful and well presented as well as welcoming.

Wonderful, professional care given to my mother. Carers always polite and caring, clean clothing and bedding given every day. Rooms immaculate as all other areas are kept. As a family member, I could make my own tea/coffee and given food whenever I asked. I could talk and mix with the staff at times
and sympathy and understanding given in my time of grief. Mother received a super welcome on arrival as I did which helped to put my mind at rest. Food very good.

As I have always turned up unexpected for visiting my father as I work or busy, the nursing home always feels warm and inviting. There are always staff around checking on the residents. There never seems to be a bother to talk to any member of staff. They are all very friendly, very willing to help
and listen. I feel very confident that my father is well looked after and he seems to be happy there.

It was a lucky day for my mother when Palm Court agreed to take her in. She had aggressive dementia and had been asked to leave her previous care home. The manager of Palm Court asked me to describe my mother. To be tactful I said she was "feisty". The manager laughed and answered "we love em feisty".
He interviewed mum and she moved in shortly afterwards. The care, compassion and understanding she has received from all members of staff has been exemplary and they have taken a great weight off my shoulders. I no longer worry about her welfare as I know that she is in good, kind and professional hands. Thank you Palm Court.

Overall the service at Palm Court meets my expectations at this time, on my short experience to date. My key observations are; My concerns and comments are acted upon in a timely manner. I have found the medical side to be very good, for example the doctor visits regularly without delay. I have found
the comments left by staff for me to read, to be informative and I feel involved in my husbands care as a result. Any comments I have made in response, have been considered and acted upon in line with my expectations. Having come to Palm Court from hospital he has settled in very well and he likes his room. The care and support he receives is excellent. They have done so much for him, of which, I say Thank you. Owing to my own disability, if I am unable to visit, I know that he is being cared for with dignity. As my Grandson remarked, Thank you for giving my Granddad back to us!

My mother has been at Palm Court for 6 months, with the original diagnosis of 'days to live'. Six months down the line and she is still here. I account this to the excellent diligent nursing care that she has received from the medical and care teams. The staff are warm and emphatic with time and patience
for the residents. I am fortunate that I have time to visit and do so frequently and often on a daily basis. I have a code to enter the building and freely enter and leave. My mother is always clean and dressed although she is prominently bedbound the staff realise the importance of still dressing and 'getting ready for the day'. Due to mobility issues my mother has to be turned frequently and this is done religiously. The nursing team are professional in their manner and and give continuous updates on the care and any changes that may occur. I feel at ease asking any questions I may have and have answers accordingly. It is a painful journey putting the one you love into the care of others. However Palm Court has made the transition for myself and family members a much easier process.

Current Review Score: 7.1 (7.128)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.1 (7.128) out of 10 for Palm Court Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.0 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.1 out of 5 from 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.000 for Palm Court Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (12 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 22 Ratings = 4

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.128 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Palm Court Nursing Home is based on 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 = 3

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 39 registered maximum number of service users is 7.8. 1 Positive Reviews ÷ 7.8 = 0.128

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
