Sadly, my mum died earlier this week, but Tyspane had been her home for just over a year, and she was very settled there from the start. Her care has been very good - kind, considerate and delivered with dignity right to the end. The staff and the surroundings are lovely, and I would recommend Tyspane
to anyone.

My dear mother was in Barchester Tyspane Care Home for over three years.
They looked after her magnificently. As time went on her dementia worsened and she depended more and more on staying in bed and culminating in having to have 24 hours a day oxygen, I can’t thank the carers enough. They did an
absolutely spectacular job, I would especially like to thank three members of staff, in particular, for their dedicated work and care for my mum. I would also like to thank two of the nurses for their skills. They all do an amazing job, certainly something I would never be able to do. Thank you also another member of staff for all your entertainment, support and kindness to my mum. Thank you also to the administrators for your administrative work.
I am so pleased that the last years of my mum's life were spent in this amazing care.

Since the return of the general manager the home has been moving forward and feels more lively. With the introduction of a new activities lead and home-cooked food this is a welcome move giving quality to the resident's lives.

Thought I was leaving my mother for respite nursing care. What a joke, they didn’t give her her medication or failed to attend to any of the call bells. Had to remove her for her own safety. No staff, non-existant!

We understand how unsettling the transition can be when staying in a care home as the new surroundings will be unfamiliar. We welcome anyone with concerns to bring them to our attention straight away. Unfortunately, it appears that there was an issue with the community-boxed medication, which our staff are unable to administer. I understand that the team in the home rectified this issue the following day by obtaining a supply of medication they could administer. We are truly sorry that your mother’s short stay in the home did not meet your expectations and wish you both well.

My uncle (99 years old) was at Tyspane for about 7 weeks after a fall and breaking his hip and he died last week at the home. My sister and I were delighted with the respect, care and support extended to my sometimes challenging uncle. All the staff were kind and professional doing their best and even
my uncle said the 'girls' were lovely. Everyone is a girl when you are 99! The cats were much appreciated by my uncle, especially the one who stalked past his window. I was never aware of any staff shortages and, indeed, felt that the staffing levels were very good. I also thought that the standards of cleanliness were very high. The ability to provide physio in-house was one reason for going to Tyspane but I also appreciated the wide range of degrees of care as the days went on. Thank you to everyone. I highly recommend Tyspane.

Shortage of staff and it shows. Management are not good in dealing with items lost, my wife's glasses have been missing for months, very little action taken, not good for the wife, struggling to see. Quality of life is worse than it should be.

My mum moved to Tyspane in 2016 following a series of strokes that left her bed-bound and with dementia. She was not expected to live beyond that year.
Due to the outstanding care, she received from the team at Tyspane, she defied the medics and had six quality years at Tyspane before she died at the
beginning of this year. She enjoyed the company of the staff and was delighted that she was able to spend time with animals, whom she loved. She was regularly visited by dogs and the house cats and on one extraordinary occasion, a llama came to visit her in her room.
The Tyspane team went above and beyond to provide an environment in which my mum felt safe and loved and it was a huge relief to me - as her only son - to know how well she was being looked after. We spoke most days and visited regularly and the support I got from the team was also massively appreciated.
I can not thank the team enough for the care and love they gave my mum.

Having visited my wife, who has Alzheimer's disease, in Tyspane for over 10 years, I am well acquainted with the staff and workings of Tyspane Care Home and rate the home highly in North Devon. The home has wide corridors, spacious rooms and lovely gardens-all maintained to a high level. Like most Care
Homes and especially during the Covid pandemic, staffing has sometimes been a problem due to sickness and low pay, but with a nucleus of long service, well-trained and caring staff and recent recruitment, staffing has improved. I give praise and thanks to staff in all sections of the home, especially to certain individuals for their caring and concern for the wellbeing of the residents and their surroundings together with friendship, kindness and understanding shown to me.

My lovely mum has been in Tyspane for 18 months. I feel she is cared for with lots of TLC. I visit most days and the carers and all staff are very warm towards me. Mum sadly hasn't been too well this year but the good care has helped.

Brilliant physiotherapy treatment with a very tricky problem. My partner's hand is clenched after several strokes - he refuses to have treatment or allow carers or physiotherapists to touch it or help him with exercises or washing it - or cutting nails. However, with the (partner) present - the physiotherapist
managed to open the fingers and was his hand (partially opened the fingers) and in my presence really managed to put a pad under the fingers without him shouting.

My mother was a resident at Tyspane Nursing home for many years. The care she received over the years was exceptional. The care and devotion of the team of staff was excellent, especially during the long months of the Covid lockdown. My Mother died at Tyspane Care Home and was treated with care and

I cannot thank the staff and management enough for looking after my mother over these very difficult last few years. She was treated with love and respect which was very comforting. She managed to have her 100th Birthday in the home and the staff put on a fantastic show decorating the lounge with streamers,
balloons and lots of cakes for everyone. A day I shall not forget. Thank you once again for all your hard work. I highly recommend Tyspane.

We were happy that Mum was receiving good quality, friendly care in a well-maintained building. The staff were always kind and very friendly and activities were always plentiful and varied which kept Mum interested and entertained throughout her time there.
As her mobility deteriorated the staff needed
to provide more intensive and time-consuming care but this was always provided without hesitation.
The administrative process of having Mum be a resident for over five years was always efficient and clear to understand and was also handled in a friendly way.
We are grateful to all the staff at Tyspane for their contribution in making Mum's final years as enjoyable and safe as they were.

My husband was admitted to hospital as an emergency from there with sepsis as he was not monitored correctly as a patient there and became dehydrated. I was very disappointed with the care as observations were not followed up and emergency services were not contacted earlier. Would not recommend it.

I love the outdoors and spend my leisure time fishing, walking my dog and spending time with my Grandchildren.


I have worked at Tyspane as the Maintenance Manager for several years and love meeting the residents and their families. My role is challenging and rewarding and I enjoy working as part of team Tyspane.

Claire is responsible for the housekeeping and laundry team at Tyspane Care Home. She ensures the home meets a high standard of cleanliness and works closely with staff, residents and relatives. She works with her team to ensure that the home is clean and inviting.

Babs main interests are keeping fit and she spends a lot of her spare time as a fitness instructor, holding various classes around the local community.


Babs has been our physio assistant working alongside Rob our Physiotherapist,
In 2016, she was awarded the 'Devon Best Practice Award' for her flexicise class. She owns our 'pamper dogs' – her three Maltese – who deliver papers with her in the morning.
She is band 4 in physio and really tries to make residents' day fun; she very much believes in the 'if you don’t use it, you lose it' mentality, so she always encourages residents to participate, regardless of mobility concerns, because everyone is able to do something!

Hi I am Kelvin the Head Gardener at Tyspane.


I live locally in Barnstaple with my wife and family. I enjoy spending time outdoors, going to the beach and enjoying BBQs with the family. I love to listen to music to help me relax.


I have been working in the horticultural industry for over 25 years since leaving school at 16.


I love my time at Tyspane where I am able to demonstrate my full potential, maintaining and creating a beautiful outside space for the residents and their families to enjoy.
