Burwood Nursing Home was so helpful and kind, taking my dad (85) for respite after he had a fall and broke his shoulder and ribs. He needed help with washing, dressing and mealtimes, all of which were done with dignity, kindness and fun.
The staff are exemplary and it's such a happy place. The garden
was a godsend to sit out and enjoy when visiting.
The noise of other residents' TVs was way too loud (even in the middle of the night) but we were told there was nothing that could be done. This was the only negative but it did impact my Dad's stay.

I cannot fault Burnwood Nursing Home. The owners and staff are extremely caring and very friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. I am very grateful my brother has received this excellent care for 2 and a half years.

My father could not have been resident in a better care home. The quality of the service provided is outstanding. All of the staff are friendly, caring and totally professional. My father sadly passed away at the beginning of February. He was treated with the utmost dignity, and we, as a family, felt
nothing but genuine love and support. I cannot recommend these people highly enough.

Burwood Nursing Home is without doubt exceptional in all aspects as the CQC reflects.
This family run established Nursing home is warm and welcoming, the staff are genuinely kind and caring wanting to make a difference to the resident's lives.
Burwood Nursing Home truly has a homely atmosphere with
plenty of activities and trips planned, I particularly like the in house Railway Inn and theatre.
My dad has had a recent stay at Burwood and I could not have asked for anywhere better for him to be. It was so reassuring knowing he has received the best care from a genuinely lovely team. Thank you.

We travel up from Plymouth. They gave us lunch and couldn't do enough for us. The staff are so friendly and helpful. I can't praise them enough. It felt like a five-star hotel more than a nursing home. The home is spotless. If there was a home in Plymouth like this, I would put my name down.

Reply from Paul Jessup, Director at Burwood Nursing Home

I'm pleased to hear that you both enjoyed your pub lunch in our Railway Tavern and worth the drive up from Plymouth. You are welcome anytime, the pub is always open!

My mum enjoyed her stay at Burwood Nursing Home. She was well looked after and her individual needs were met. She enjoyed the activities and the interaction with the staff and residents. Although she was only there for respite care for two weeks, she is already keen to return. An excellent home, which
she will recommend to her friends.

Reply from Paul Jessup, Director at Burwood Nursing Home

I travelled up from Plymouth to see my uncle and aunty. The home couldn't do enough for us. From the time we arrived to leaving. They made us dinner and are so friendly. I wouldn't mind living there when I'm older. The home is so clean and fresh it's like a five star hotel all the staff are truly amazing
friendly and lovely.

My mother was cared for by the Burwood Team from 2017 to her passing in July 2022. I say 'team', it really is much more like a family, and it enabled my mum to have a lovely final chapter in her life. The care has been second to none, but more importantly, it has been fun, and we have always felt welcome
at Burwood Nursing Home. I am particularly grateful for the care and compassion given to my mum (and me!) during Mum's final decline and passing. If I had to mention just one brilliant aspect of Burwood's approach, it has been communication. Whether it has been with reception, the nursing team or the management team, communication has always been friendly, responsive and proactive. I am so pleased we found Burwood Nursing Home and that my mum decided to stay (after just her first week in her respite trial!). Thanks to everyone; you are all stars!

My mother has been a resident of Burwood Nursing Home since 2016. She is very happy there and I cannot thank the staff enough for their care and kindness shown to her from the receptionist to the manager, everyone is lovely. She is now 102yrs young and the oldest resident at the moment but I know she
is happy and well cared for.

This was my first time in a nursing home for respite for me and my dad (permitting my wife to go to Sheffield to see her mum who has dementia) and we were pleasantly surprised by the care and the staff. They could not do enough for you and they all make a difference to people's lives and the local and
national community. We felt safe and secure - made better by understanding, helpful, caring and informative staff that make it like a family atmosphere. Thank you, Burwood. I'll be back.

Wonderful response from the moment of my first enquiry. Clean home, where residents are priority. Everything that was required in a lovely, bright, modern room. My husband can be difficult due to Alzheimer's, but he always praised the staff and I could tell he was happy with his care. I was having surgery
and needed time to recover. Whenever I checked in to see how my husband was doing, they were very reassuring and gave me a lot of information on what was going on. Couldn't praise the manager more.

My Mum was at Burwood Nursing Home for a year and received excellent care and assistance during this time. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the home has a good atmosphere. I would not hesitate in recommending Burwood Nursing Home.

Thank you, Kathy, for a lovely review of Burwood. We are pleased to say that we are now getting back into things with our activities. Our theatre has been out of use for the last 2 years and last week we had our first performance with more shows booked in going forward including the ABBA show and west end musicals. The pub is now open, so slowly getting back to some kind of normality.

My aunty was staying with Burwood for some respite care. She said the staff always had a smile on their face and treated her like the queen, she felt nothing was too much trouble. When I visited my aunty, the staff always made me feel very welcome. My aunty said the food (especially the fish), was delightful.
The feel of the home is very unique and felt much more like a community, rather than a nursing home.

I stayed at this care home for two weeks respite. I was apprehensive, as I have never stayed in a care home. I loved it. The staff are all so friendly and they really do care and work together as a team to deliver a great experience. They are very caring and efficient. Thank you and I will be back again,
one day.

Nothing is too much trouble. The staff are delightful and the overall care and atmosphere at the home is excellent. An added bonus is that there is regular feedback concerning the resident (mother in law), from the staff, which is very reassuring.

Flowers and gardens are good.
Staff are really, really lovely.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the review of our home. It was pleasing to see that you are pleased with all of our categories and the only ones that did you did not rate as 5 out of 5 were our facilities and activities.
We will look at this further to see how we can improve. As you know things have been difficult as a lot of our usual facilities and activities have been reduced or curtailed such as our pub and theatre visits due to the current situation. Even the dogs have not been allowed in but hopefully, things will start to improve now.

The home is very friendly, and the staff go out of their way to care for our family member, and we know that she is safe and well cared for. Her room and surroundings are excellent, and we, like her, are treated a family member. The home is excellent, and we would have no hesitation in recommending
to friends and family.

Reply from Paul Jessup, owner at Burwood Nursing Home

Thank you for the positive review and for giving us 5 out of 5 for all categories apart from value for money.
I do understand that it is a difficult category to rate as it is difficult to compare. However, for the extent of our facilities and our level of care, I believe we have a fair cost which is less than other local care homes.

I have been a resident in Burwood Nursing Home for over three and a half years and have been very happy living here. I have a lovely room containing all I need to live a life as normally as possible. All the staff are kind, caring and do everything for me with a smile. The precautions that have taken
to prevent any outbreak of coronavirus here has been excellent with no cases of the virus recorded.

My father is a long term resident at Burwood Nursing Home and he has always received outstanding care. Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, the home has ensured that residents have been kept safe and well. They have done their utmost to keep families in touch with their loved ones through all means
available and to ensure that residents have as many activities and opportunities as possible, to provide variety and stimulation despite the restrictions imposed by shielding. Management have provided regular updates to families, to ensure we are kept up to date with guidelines but also to allay any fears we may have had, given the extensive media coverage of difficulties in the care sector.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.720)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.720) out of 10 for Burwood Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.7 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 5.000 for Burwood Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (48 Excellents x 5) ) ÷ 48 Ratings = 5

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.72 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Burwood Nursing Home is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.345

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
