Castleford House nursing home is an attractive Victorian building, set in an idyllic location, near Chepstow. The interior boasts large rooms, high ceilings, massive fireplaces, all lovingly and sympathetically refurbished.

Castleford House offers stylish and comfortable accommodation for residents. There's a mixture of single and double rooms and the majority are ensuite, with a terrace or views onto gardens. Inside the house, residents enjoy bright and airy lounges as well as a smaller sitting room/library for quiet reading.

A rich schedule of organised activities gives residents the opportunity to participate in favourite pastimes, learn new skills, venture outdoors and keep their minds and bodies fit and alert.

There is a passenger lift and all areas are accessible for wheel-chairs. The gardens are available to residents and visitors at all times and offer views over the Wye Valley.

My sister was transferred from another home, where we were not happy with her care. Castleford House is managed with a completely different philosophy. It seems to me that the staff, residents and their families are included within the care plan. The manager evidently takes pride in and cares about
his responsibilities. This is shown in the warmth of the staff and their interaction with residents and families. I would love my sister to be at home. But this is a good alternative and I don't think you'll find better. Some of the ratings I have put 'good' rather than excellent because I don't really know, i.e. rooms. I have only seen one, it was okay. But I don't think that's very important. What is - is the care.

After nearly 3 years of outstandingly good care my wife sadly passed away in February. During the last few days, and the last day in particular the care was simply superb, calm, reassuring, constant vigilance everything in fact that contributed to an inevitable but gentle passage. One could not have
wished for a more peaceful passing, and all this in spite of the difficulties posed by covid restrictions. I cannot praise the nurses and carers highly enough. It was caring of the highest order - thank you.

My mother-in-law came to stay in December, it was a difficult time especially with a pandemic, the transition was made easier by all the staff and management. We were kept updated, it’s been hard with restrictions on visits but have managed video calls and telephone calls. Any query or concern has been
answered swiftly. The activities to keep them busy are amazing and varied, well done!

My mam is a resident at the home and they have been amazing with her. She is extremely settled and happy. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and they have been a massive support to us as a family. The activities are fantastic and all the residents have a smile whenever you see them.

Mum has been in Castleford Care home since May 2020 and it is amazing. The staff are all fantastic and although we have not been able to see mum very much we get to interact with her every week on video calls and see regular updates of all the great activities she is involved in. Communication is great
too which is invaluable when we can’t visit. Highly recommend this care home to others thinking about the best place for loved ones.

Mum joined our father at Castleford in December, after making a very difficult decision as a family. We knew she would be welcomed and looked after just as our father has, we could not have wished for anywhere else that offered such wonderful care and compassion.

I was very wary about Nan going into a home, especially in the middle of a pandemic!
I needn't have worried. Castleford House have been amazing, ensuring that Nan is comfortable and feels safe, while ensuring she is always busy. They have really jumped through hoops to ensure she is happy. We haven't
been able to see her yet but have managed to have the odd window chat and video call, which both she and my kids have loved! Before Christmas we were part of a carol service to sing for the residents through the window. You should have seen her face light up.
All in all I wouldn't have wanted my nan anywhere else!

This is the most wonderful and caring place you would want your loved one to be lucky enough to reside in. My mum was at Castleford for nearly three years. The staff there were very caring and treated my mum with dignity and respect. She was always clean and well cared for.
The home was always very clean and never had a smell about it as witnessed in other homes.
The food was always of a very high standard
and there was always a good choice, the chefs would even cook something else if there wasn’t anything on the menu my mum fancied. There were always plenty of snacks and lots of delicious homemade cakes. Each year they made my mum a special birthday cake as they do with all the residents.
The level of activity that takes place ie exceptional even though COVID has prevented outside entertainers from entering the home. The lifestyles team are amazing and do everything they can to occupy the residents. Before COVID they even took some residents ice skating. What they do there is outstanding.
The management at the home was approachable and listened to our views as a family. They made us all feel like one big family.

This has been a year like no other but I feel that my husband is in the best possible place to be looked after with his severely declining health. I appreciate that no care home can be perfect; particularly when it predominately deals with difficult and distressing situations and it must be run for profit but I firmly believe that Castleford care home is as good as it gets. I have always found the care home to be clean; the residents are kept
comfortable and the staff go that extra mile to take care of the residents as well as the relatives. I have heard from other relatives that their end of care life is more than can be hoped for. During this difficult time, we are able to facetime our loved one and are assured that he is in the best possible place. In spite of not being able to visit the home, we have every faith in the care provided. I and my family are extremely grateful to each and every one of the staff. They are all brilliant. Castleford well deserves its outstanding rating.

Mum has been with the home for almost three years. If it was not for the manager and his fantastic team, Mum would not be with us today as we moved her from another home. Since being in the home, she has gone from strength to strength and they do everything they can to make sure she has a fantastic
quality of life. She very often goes out on day trips and does many activities that she would not have completed if she was not there. She keeps everyone smiling and has not lost the character she previously had - this is due to all the staff making her feel valued and special. We would be totally lost without the high level of care and respect at this difficult time and we can’t thank each and every member of staff enough. I am in the medical profession myself and have worked in many care homes over the years and this is by far the best care home I have ever had the pleasure to be connected with. We will always be eternally grateful for the kind, passionate team at Castleford and would highly recommend them.

Castleford staff are excellent. They are friendly and welcoming. The managers door is always open. He and the team keep us updated on the current situation, which really helps, given the fact we are unable to visit.

My husband was admitted to Castleford on 18th May and went into quarantine for 14 days as is standard practice. He was very confused and stressed because he had already been in quarantine for eight weeks in hospital. The manager and his staff have been so good since he was admitted and we can now Face-time
my husband and see that he has settled in so well. There are lots of activities for the residents to take part in and we as a family have no hesitation in recommending Castleford House to anyone who wants firstclass care for themselves or their loved ones.

A high standard of care, some excellent staff in all areas. As with everywhere, there is scope for improvement, but there is a continuous and effective effort for continuous improvement. There have been very many changes over the 3 years that my mum has been here. Any issues we have are always taken
seriously and acted upon. One area I think still needs some work is the food, which is rather institutional. The meals are prepared well but there is little by way of homely extras, such as a choice of cheeses, breads, any palate stimulants such as pickles, pate, olives, or other little extras. It’s not easy to get ‘special’ extras given unless a relative brings them and offers them. The residents' tastes do change, but there is a narrow range of food for the tastes to change to.

I've had a varied and exciting nursing career, working as a cosmetic treatment nurse for the Harley Medical Group and, before that, staff nurse roles in Chepstow Community Hospital and the Manchester Infirmary Clinic. I became a nurse because a friend of mine applied to nursing college. However, I found that I enjoy caring for people, trying to give them the best care/life possible.


I consider myself to be a good listener, able to provide support and I am not judgemental. I enjoy meeting and getting to know people I care for, making them smile or having a laugh. I like knowing that their loved ones are happy with the care they are receiving.


In my opinion, Castleford House achieving overall Outstanding is the home's best achievement. I believe that I played my part in that, helping develop the home into a forward-thinking environment with more modern standards of care. I celebrate success at home with a meal or takeaway, or treat myself to a shopping spree! At Castleford I like to ensure that everyone knows that they are an important part of any success the home has.


I find that going for a run or walk helps with my mental health. I also cope with stress by writing a list of things that I need to do and prioritising what needs to be done first.


Castleford House and Milkwood Care are very supportive and flexible. The company are keen for the team to achieve further qualifications.

I previously worked as a heavy plant operator, a JCB driver, a boarding manager at Lafarge Plasterboard and was then manager at Critchcraft Tiles.


One of my favourite things about my role is seeing people smile after a job is done. I find that this role is different to the other jobs I've had, it's a bit of a challenge for me. I think the ability to learn and fix a variety of tasks, many being quite challenging, is one of my strengths.


I think that one of Castleford House's biggest achievements is getting the overall "Outstanding" CQC rating. When I'm stressed I tend to go clay pigeon shooting or blame the wife (and then buy her some flowers afterwards).


At Castleford there's always help at hand if you need it. Being part of the team allows me to achieve so many things in my role.

Amelia Pace

I started in social care as a care assistant at Gibraltar Care Village in 2013, moving to Castleford House in 2014. I became a senior carer in 2016 and then swapped onto lifestyles in 2018, initially working as a lifestyles coordinator and senior carer, and then I became a full-time lifestyles coordinator. In 2021, I became "Head of Lifestyles".


I consider myself to be innovative and creative, have excellent communication skills, am able to plan and have great people skills. I am able to think and work outside the box and strive to achieve outstanding standards. I wanted to work as a lifestyles coordinator because I believe that, with my unique skill set, I can make a difference to people's lives and improve the quality of it through meaningful stimulation and person-centred activities.


My best achievements at Castleford House include:
1. Going "viral" on social media
2. The home achieving an overall "Outstanding" CQC rating
3. Winning "Activities Team of the Year 2021" at the Caring UK Awards.
4. Helping people who experience dementia defy limitations


I celebrate success in style! We have ceremonies and display our achievements, including everyone helping and encouraging others to learn from us. When I experience stress, I try to break down my issues into smaller pieces and look to problem solve. I'm not afraid to ask for help and I am aware that I need to prioritise my mental health.


The team at Castleford House really helps me achieve my career and personal goals - there is ongoing support and we are an extended family.
